> 1989
We all know this draft pool was Legendary. The Lions 1st round pick 3rd Overall
was the heisman trophy winner that year. Yes, It's Barry Sanders. In which was a beginning
Of a Miracle. When in reality it was the beginning of the end.
1990
> The worst draft pick of the decade was the first one -- QB Andre Ware of Houston, the
> seventh pick overall. He never played a down in a regular-season NFL game after his
> contract expired following the 1993 season. For his career, he threw five touchdown passes.
> The Lions got journeymen defensive linemen Dan Owens and Marc Spindler in the second
> and third rounds. LB Rob Hinckley in the fourth round was a bust. He never played because
> of a foot injury. Deeper in the draft, DB Chris Oldham, WR Willie Green, LB Tracy
> Hayworth and C Roman Fortin became players. Fortin and Oldham are still in the league.
> 1991
> The top pick -- WR Herman Moore -- was a gem. But WR Reggie Barrett in the third
> round never panned out. CB Kevin Scott's career ended with a knee injury in the '94
> exhibition season. T Scott Conover lasted six years as an off-and-on starter.
> 1992
> Strong at the top. DE Robert Porcher has become one of the league's better linemen. The
> second round added a pass rusher in Tracy Scroggins, and a trade brought another
> second-round pick -- used to take kicker Jason Hanson, one of the league's best. Willie Clay,
> a big-play defensive back, was a steal in the eighth round.
> 1993
> Not the worst pick, but the worst draft-day deal of the decade -- and perhaps the
> half-century. Maybe even the millennium. The Lions traded the eighth pick in the first round
> to New Orleans for LB Pat Swilling. He made no impact and was released after two years.
> The Saints used the pick to take Willie Roaf, a perennial Pro Bowl tackle. Only C Mike
> Compton is still with the Lions, but three other picks are with other teams -- CB Ryan
> McNeil, CB Greg Jeffries and FB Ty Hallock.
> 1994
> The quandary in the first round was whether to take WR Johnnie Morton or LB Rob
> Fredrickson. The Lions chose Morton -- and chose wisely. Ironically, Fredrickson started for
> the Lions in '98 after being acquired in a trade with the Raiders. Only one other player from
> the draft -- G Tony Semple -- is still with the Lions. Safety Van Malone, taken in the second
> round, was undersized and started only eight games. DT Shane Bonham was a fill-in from the
> third round. CB Vaughn Bryant in the fourth was released in training camp. CB Jocelyn
> Borgella hung on for two years as a third-stringer. LB Tom Beer had to retire in training
> camp in '97 because of a concussion.
> 1995
> A hat trick at the top, three Pro Bowlers from the '99 season with the first three picks --
> DT Luther Elliss (first round), TE David Sloan (third) and MLB Stephen Boyd (fifth). And
> there was another sharp move. The second-round pick was dealt to San Diego for a
> first-round pick in '96. It was used for G Jeff Hartings. Later in '95 came FB Cory
> Schlesinger.
> 1996
> Two first-rounders should have added help on both sides, but tragedy cut this plan short.
> LB Reggie Brown suffered a career-ending neck injury in the last regular-season game of
> '97. Hartings is a fine guard and two-time Pro Bowl alternate. Because of trades, there were
> only five picks. And only S Ryan Stewart, with two career starts, remains in the league.
> 1997
> The most-injured draft class in the Lions' history. Five picks have spent long stretches on
> injured reserve -- T Juan Roque, CB Kevin Abrams, LB Matt Russell, TE Pete Chryplewicz
> and LB Richard Jordan. And CB Bryant Westbrook, the top pick who looked so good his first
> two years, declined badly in '99. This is a bounce-back year for Westbrook and Abrams, who
> played briefly in only one '99 game because of foot problems.
> 1998
> The best might have come in the second round -- WR Germane Crowell and QB Charlie
> Batch. Batch has to stay healthy. Top pick Terry Fair was developing as a dependable cover
> cornerback until a broken hand caused him to miss the last five games last season. Because
> of trades, there were only five picks.
> 1999
> All seven picks made the roster, but there is one giant question mark -- Aaron Gibson, the
> 380-pound right tackle taken as the second pick in the first round. He missed all of '99
> because of an injured right shoulder that required reconstructive surgery. The Lions passed
> on Jevon Kearse to take LB Chris Claiborne with the ninth pick overall. The rookie season of
> DE Jared DeVries was shortened by a foot injury. Elsewhere, RB Sedrick Irvin, S Ty Talton,
> LB Clint Kriewaldt and DE Mike Pringley are role players.
2000
The up-coming draft should prove to be very exciting.Hoping the Lions don't waste them on RB
Positions. And go for either Defense Or an OL. A Strong Safety May even be rewarding.
If the lions do go for the RB, As mentioned before Shaun Alexander from UOA Crimson Tide is Nice.
