want to take into consideration that both signing bonuses AND incentives are

JOKER
Lotsa names on that list I didn't recognize (not that I know everyone on the
roster anyway), but it brought up a question: How do all those FA's that
they sign, bring into camp, and then cut figure into the salary cap? Do
their contracts say something like "If you make the team we'll pay you this,
but if not we'll pay for your bus ticket home, and you can keep your game
jersey for a lovely parting gift"?
Scott
Usually, salaries are not guaranteed, so they don't count against the
cap unless the guy actually plays. (I seem to remember there may be
some small pro-rated charge against the cap for pre-season, but if there
is, it's small). The Lions could sign you or me to a $20 Million per
year salary, but not take a cap hit because we'd never make it out of
the first day of training camp alive.
Signing bonuses (and any other do-it-in-your-sleep bonus, like reporting
bonuses, etc.) are considered by the league to be guaranteed money, so
they do count against the cap. Usually, a team won't offer a guy
guaranteed money unless they're pretty sure he'll make it out of
training camp, so I wouldn't count on Charlie Sanders Jr. getting much
right now except a jersey he can give to his Dad.
