Subject: Browns Television Coverage
Sir,
A disturbing rumour going around is your station,WBNS channel 10 will not be
airing Cleveland Browns games this fall.
Please assure me that is what it is,,just a rumour.
Sincerely,
Greg Gamble
Here is Jeff Hogans Reply:
greg-- this should set things straight-- thanks for watching.. jeff..
10TV tries to meet the needs of all of our sports fans and their preference
of teams. For the 2001 Season we approached both the Browns and the Bengals
to cover their pre-season games. The producer of the Browns pre-season games
and WBNS were unable to agree on terms for the broadcast of Browns
Pre-Season Football on WBNS. For the regular season, the games are assigned
on a weekly basis by CBS Sports. WBNS' ability to chose a particular game
during the regular season is limited. CBS and 10TV make every effort to
broadcast games with the most interest. We will work diligently to cover the
Browns on 10TV Eyewitness News and on 10TV's Wall to Wall sports.
Dosent sound promising does it?????
You vill not vake up from za BRAINCLAW!!!!!!
>Looks like us Central / SouthEastern Ohio fans could be screwed. What does
>this sound like to you guys????

Yep, I recieved the same form part of the letter that you did.
However. Jeff Hogan did, in my reply, all, but say the management told
him what his response was going to be. Period. He, as an on air
personality, has little say in programing, but he can talk to the Boss
in meetings and point out the pressure from Browns fans.
I'll post his personal part of his message next, but before
swalowing it. Consider if they have no choice in which game they show
how is it that they, when they choose, can alternate between Bengals
and Browns games, or, as in last year, show all Browns games. CBS
could care less what game they show as long as they broadcast a game.
If they had a concern I would think it would be for WBNS to show the
game with the highest viewership, that, of course, would be the
Browns, as the Bengals have Dayton, Cincy and several other southern
stations showing the Bengals. Most of these channels are available on
cable in the Southern half of the state. So, Cincy is covered. As for
WBNS not being able to choose the game they show. It's pure spin.
That's the story they came up with thinking it would deflect pressure
from them. I may have been born at night, but it wasn't last night. I
ain't buying it. Here's what Jeff Hogan sent to me. before pasting on
the form response.: Take note of the, "This is the stance they want
me to put out there." ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Jeff Hogan's Personal part of reply. He sounds frustrated too.
jeff-- i hope this clears up some of your questions.. i'm not putting
you
off with a form letter.. but we've had a million inquiries and this is
the
stance they want me to put 'out there'.. i'd be glad to discuss it
further..
but i'm sure you know i'm not part of any programming decisions at the
station.. i just report the sports.. i don't have any say in what's
shown
outside of my sportcasts... thanks for your patience.. thanks for
watching..
jeff..
The rest was the same form letter you received. Now I'm going to
press for info on how they can choose to alternate Browns bengals
games, but can't choose to show Browns games. Corporate Snow Job. I
bet Modell has stock in the company. (just kidding, I'm not that
paranoid). But we do need to keep pressure on them to....lobby CBS
(yeah right) to allow them to show Browns games. Like CBS cares.
Actually I'm going to send the form letter to CBS and see how they
feel about WBNS making them the heavy. We at least have their
attention folks lots not stop before the fat lady sings. We'd be upset
if the Browns just gave up with three minutes left on the clock and a
tie game on the line.

Columbus no coverage
Cleveland Metro- Blacked out
This leaves the Youngstown,Akron-Canton,and Toledo markets as the other
broadcast revenue sources .
With Columbus having the largest metro population of these cities.as well as
a larger fringe market which includes all of central and southeastern
Ohio, something tells me that network control is not the issue here, rather
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.Is WBNS holding us Browns Fans hostage????Or is it
CBS??? We have to get to the bottom of this!!!!
One more thought to ponder. Should we be led to beleive that a mega-billion
dollar organisation like CBS is so disorganized that its affiliates
do not know from week to week what game they will be airing? How will the
stations sell advertising time, how can they announce their broadcasting
schedule to the newspapers,to Tv GUIDE,etc etc etc??/ It goes against the
very business practices that the broadcasting
industry as a whole base their very existence on!!! IM SO
CONFUSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just don't give up. WBNS put there spin, "out there" assuming we
would shut up and let it go. It's so silly it's ridiculous. Don't give
up, keep on WBNS for the regular season, and I'm going to let CBS know
they are being made the Heavy for WBNS's shafting of Browns fans.
PLEaSE everyone keep writing, every spin they put out question it,
ask them to explain the ridiculous line they expect us to swallow
I can't make every game, and putting in a whole satelite system
just for the not so cheap NFL package is kinda pricey. And they know
it...

Let's see - last Saturday - First Browns Preseason Game of the season - New
Coach - New Players - Tim Couch back in the saddle ... nah, there was
nothing worth covering there now was there? Even the Sunday rag made no
mention of the team that I could find anywhere - at least not on the sports
pages. Now this week Ch10 has Baltimore Ravens scheduled, and blames that on
CBS
MAYBE IF THE BROWNS PAINTED SOME BUCKEYE NUTS ON THEIR HELMET IT WOULD GET
THE ATTENTION OF THESE SMALL TOWN COWPOKES!
Get Real People - hear the message: Channel 10 doesn't want our viewership -
the Dispatch doesn't want our measily $$ - don't fall prey to their BS
excuses on this. There are lots of great deals out there on DIRECTV, and if
you want to read a REAL newspaper there are many places in this cowtown
where you can buy the CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER and the AKRON BEACON JOURNAL.
This is what we get for allowing one group to have so much control over the
media in this little town. And no thanks "gentlemen" - I will know all I
want to know about the games long before your mini "news" coverage tells me
the score.

CL :{)
I've noticed a lot of posts regarding 10TV's coverage of the Browns' and
Bengal's football on 10TV.
First off, please understand that the issues being discussed are regarding
Pre-Season games. WBNS-10TV understands that Browns, Bengals, and Steelers
fans are anxiously anticipating coverage of their favorite teams. We work to
meet that anticipation on several levels.
We discussed our pre-season coverage with both the producer of the Browns'
games and the Bengal's with the intention of carrying as many games as we
could. However, terms with the producers of the Browns' pre-season could not
be mutually agreed upon. We were able to agree on terms with the producers
of the Cincinnati Bengals preseason match ups.
We would love to cover every sport of every sports fan but this goal is
simply unattainable. However, we make every effort through our commitment to
sports through Wall to Wall Sports, our Buckeye Blitz Specials, and our
unprecedented commitment to regional sports through 10TV Eyewitness News.
CBS and 10TV will try to air as many Browns games as possible. However, the
decision for the games aired ultimately lies with the network. WBNS-10TV
vehemently lobbies for the games for which we receive the most viewer
interest and feedback.
We appreciate your passion for Browns football and we look forward to
bringing as many games as possible on WBNS-10TV. We encourage you to check
the weekly football schedule on our website: www.10tv.com
We thank Columbus Media Talk for a venue to correct a rumor that needed to
be addressed in our market. I hope that the readers respond in a
constructive fashion to allow the television stations of this market to
better serve Central Ohio.

WBNS10TV - Home of the Bengals?
WBNS10TV - Home of the Browns?
WBNS10TV - Home of the Steelers?
WBNS10TV - Home of the Buckeyes? (he he he COWTOWN!)
In the end, what they will have is ALL of the above unhappy because NONE of
the above receive any kind of adequate answer...

But aren't the Browns on WCMH (Channel 4) during the regular season? How
would anything WBNS does or doesn't do affect them unless the Browns play
an NFC team?

Nah, I just had it backwards...or maybe subconsciously I don't want to
know WBNS is responsible for televising the Browns games. They make such a
mess of other things. Want to see your favorite network show at 8 pm on
10TV? But wait! It's the Andrea Cambern special on living with warts
that's on.
Well, here's hoping we don't get screwed during the regular season as
well. I'm sure not going to watch the Bengals.
>Here's another perspective. This post was taken from "Columbus Media
>Talk."
I guess perspective is one word you could use to descibe their
spin. BS is another that comes to my mind. Pre Season is not going to
be covered. Period. My concern is with the regular season. I really
don't have the cash to install a satelite system, just for NFL
coverage when I have 500+ digital cable already hooked up and
billing...But, if I have to I will, but I'll spend the rest of my days
on earth boycotting WBNS, and writing their sponsors, I'll watch
enough to find out who they are anyway :) This is just corporate BS
and I ain't goin for it. They were able to show the Browns last year,
and NBC (when they had the AFC) unfortunately alternated between
Browns Bengals games, so either policy has changed since last season,
or this is just corporate spin. It's obvious what I think.
