That date certainly isn't set in stone. That's the date the
first game will be held on IF the stadium is completed in time. The
deal states that the stadium progress will be judged twice in 1998
(June and October IIRC). If the stadium is judged to be on schedule,
the new team will begin play in 1999. If not on schedule for the end
of July, but on schedule for the beginning of September, 1999, the team
will begin play in 1999 IF the city agrees to schedule all of the
pre-season games as road games. If neither deadline is going to be
reached, the team will begin play in 2000. Obviously, these are the
LATEST a team can start. The team could easily start earlier, and the
NFL has reserved the Horseshoe in Columbus in case it is needed.

If they don't, the penalties involed are in the
>hundreds of millions of dollars range. That is, they would have to pay
>for the enitre stadium, tens of millions of dollars in penalties EACH
>YEAR, until a team is placed and any legal costs incurred with the

>and the NFL couldn't back out without losing their shirts.

This isn't entirely correct. If the NFL defaults, I'm fairly
certain the courts would rule that Cleveland would not have to repay
the $50 million "loan", and the NFL would have to pay the legal fees.
However, there is no tens of millions of dollars per year in penalties.
Instead, the deal contains a SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE clause. In summary,
it says that the value of a year of NFL football is impossible to
determine, and because of this, that monetary payoffs are NOT sufficient
restitution should the NFL breach the contract. Instead, the deal
gives Cleveland the legal right to REQUIRE the NFL to adhere by the
terms of the deal (i.e., to provide a team). They can't pay $10
million a year and delay the new team. They MUST give Cleveland a
new team by the dates specified in the deal (1999 if the stadium is
done by July 31, 1999, 2000 is not).

Talk about fooling the public. There isn't a stadium being built on the
lake in Cleveland? I thought you guys HAD to build this stadium before
the NFL would return. It seems Mayor White has other ideas.

Where's the stadium?

I moved from Akron Ohio to Virginia 2 years ago...(it really sucks
here)...but then again there is no football team in Cleveland so what the
hell. I was glad to see the Ravens play on t.v. down here (screw art
modell) so I could pretend to watch the Browns play (you know, I had to
fill the void...and screw these Redskin fanatics).
However, disgust did soon set in as well as the Budlights on Sunday
afternoons
of how bad the Ravens really were and still are and always will be...for
as long as Fart Modell is associated with that organization...and lets
remember...he don't have any money...boo...hoo. It all goes back to Marty
Schotenheimer leaving the Browns..who could blame him..he was'nt a Yes
Man. Had he stayed things certainly would be different today. And as for
you Baltimore Ravens Fans..I am glad you have something to do on Sunday
afternoons now, however, get your Prozac ready because you are gonna need
it!

The stadium cam in Cleveland shows a lack of work on the stadium
project.

We don't need a stadium cam in Baltimore. Our stadium is being built. It
is one year away from completion.

Cleveland fans booing TAGS at the HOF ceremonies is a better gesture

Listen carefully ... for a large building to be built without falling
over and going "BOOM!", you need to lay a groundwork of concrete and
steel called a "FOUNDATION." To lay a foundation, one must first dig
enough of a hole in the ground to put said concrete and steel for the
supporting structure. What you see, Irv, is the beginning of the
"foundation" of the new stadium.

I hope you took notes, you'll be tested in a week.

REALLY?! WE didn't build OUR new stadium until AFTER we knew we had a
team! If you are building a stadium that's a year from being completed,
you must've started a LOOONG time ago -- and you either KNEW A TEAM WAS
COMING (see Modell postings) or you and your elected officials were
planning to STEAL one.

WARNING....I'LL BE ATTEMPTING TO INFUSE IRVING'S BRAIN WITH LOGIC...STAND
BACK....

OK, Irving, now let's think about this for a second. Construction on
Baltimore's stadium began when, in comparison to Cleveland's? I think it's
somewhere between 8 and 12 months, but I'm not sure of the exact dates.
Baltimore's stadium is scheduled for completion in a year, right?
Cleveland's stadium is scheduled for completion when? TWO YEARS FROM
NOW!!!

Now, most people would realize that a construction project that's a year
from completion would actually look like it's farther along in the process,
when compared to a similar project that's two years from completion.

But not Irving! Irving thinks that they should be at the same stage of
construction at any given point in time. Now, I ask you, Irving - what did
Baltimore's stadium site look like a year ago? I know what it looked like
in April when I was in Baltimore, and it wasn't very far along.

If you'd get your head out of your ass for a minute, you'd realize just how
stupid your posts make you appear.

Irving, only you would post something like this. You try to tell people
how stupid I am, but the only person you quote is yourself! What does THAT
tell you, Irving?!?!?

And yes, Irving, since you got someone to read you the news...The concrete
work and much of the structural steel work is being re-bid. However, I
visited the construction site a few weeks ago while I was in Cleveland, and
there is indeed excavation work going on. Again, you twit, Baltimore's
project is much farther along than Cleveland's, so it's insane to compare
the two.

One last time, SAMMY!

The work has stopped. The concrete contracts are being re-bid. The next
phase of the work is pour MAJOR footings into the ground. This will not
be done UNTIL the contractors are chosen. Rebidding the conrete
contracts could delay construction 30-60 days.

You don't get out much, eh?

You got plenty of time to bury your dawg bones!

Again, because you clearly flunked basic engineering or didn't own a
Tinkertoy set when you were a kid ... a stadium is a large building.
To support the building, a hole must be dug in order to lay concrete
and steel under the ground to support the very large building. This
is what is known in construction circles as "THE FOUNDATION." The
Foundation is not yet built; that's why there's a hole in the ground.

Granted, not as big as the hole in your --

Too easy. Never mind.

You know that for a fact, do you? Well, Irving, as usual...YOU'RE

No, you idiot...work has not stopped. If work has stopped,
then explain to me why, when I visited the stadium site a
few weeks ago, AFTER the mayor's announcement that several
contracts would be re-bid, that there was indeed work going
on! Can you explain that, Irving? Can you?

Of course you can't. You're sitting in Baltimore. You're
relying on a fuzzy picture on the stadium cams. I saw it
in person. You're wrong, as usual.

More often than you, obviously.

And the Baltimore stadium is going so smoothly that they only have a
$10+ million cost overrun (so far). What did Maryland do to compensate
for this? They sold the naming rights to Modell for $10 million.
Another coup for Art since many people believed it was worth much more
(per Washington Post article). For more info, see:

You know this for a fact? Then what the hell are those people doing down
there every day? And why are those cranes (not the bird, the machine)
constantly moving around? And why are those trucks going in and out of
the hole all day? Wait a minute, I just figured it out. Construction was
put on hold. But to kill some time, the workers are going down there and
having dump-truck races. That has to be it! And the crane opperators are
doing nothing more than creating different tracks. Come to think of it, I
saw a road course in that hole last week, and yesterday I saw that they're
racing on a 1/4 mile oval with high banking. Those dump-trucks can haul!
No pun intended.

Dave-
It all makes sense now.

The king of irrelevance strikes again. Barnie knows he doesn't have
a preverbial lap-top to type on, as usual. He resorts to going completely
off the subject, as usual. And makes no reference to the facts that
destroyed his unimformed illogical argument, as usual.
Still the same old Barbie.

Dave-
No offense to Mattel, the manufacturer of the Barbie doll. We all know
that the doll has equal to, or more brain power than the Barbie referenced
above. Especially Talking Barbie.

Wake up, Dave. . . If it REALLY all made sense now, well . . . YOU
WOULDN'T HAVE TO SAY IT IN YOUR TAG LINE !

Wow, that was ingeniuos. Okay. Now going by your logic, and impressive
at that, if the Crows REALLY ruled, and Browns fans REALLY drooled, YOU
WOULDN'T HAVE IT IN YOUR SIG FILE!

Dave-
I really have to stop doing this

I don't have a tag line, but let's analyze your logo. "Crows rule." This
is not an accurate statement. In order to "rule," they would have to win
a lot of games and not finish in last place. "While Browns fans drool."
This is pure conjecture, and wishful thinking at best. In conclusion,
your logo is actually an icon for fraud, dripping with irony. If those
were actually true statements, you wouldn't have to say them.
