I was reading an article in this month's Playboy (Yes I read the
articles), and they had this whole expose on the guy who was supplying
steriods to Bonds. They mentioned that Lyle Alzedo died of a brain
clot related to steriods.
So it got me thinking on how strong Walter was. Walter Payton is my
all time favorite player. But he did die of a rare liver disease. Is
it possible its related to steriods? Its never been brought up
before, but I was curious if anyone was knowledgable about this.
Walter is my favorite player, but I was just curious about this
thought.

There is no known medical link between steroid use and the
kind of brain tumor that Lyle Alzedo had. Lyle concluded that
steroids caused his cancer simply because he had no other
explanation for it.

Somehow I have trouble visualizing that. I suppose if one really
wanted to chase that down, one could research the type of liver
disfunction and see if there's a link to steroid use. But Peyton was
never bulked up the way, say, Barry Sanders (legs) was, was he?

Nahh, I don't buy it.

Payton died of sclerosing cholangitis and a related bile duct cancer.
Neither has any relation to steroids, they are thought to have a genetic
etiology. You should be ashamed of yourselves for suggesting such a thing.

I agree. This is the kind of comment I'd expect from a Packers fan, not a

Walter did not have a steroid user 'look' to him, IMHO. His lack of injury
would seem to sepak against it as well. Steroid users in collison sports
have been noted to suffer tendon and ligament tears with much higher
frequency than non users. Walter was such a durable player, that I doubt he
could have been on any sort of roids.

Let me end this since I started it.
Like all of you, Walter Payton has been and always will be my favorite
professional athlete. His picture of his game by game stats from the
Tribu hangs on the wall of my apartment.
The article in Playboy got me thinking. It was just a question that
got into my head. I will never be afraid to ask questions. Alot of
negativity seeps into everything here on the net. People have
agendas. Everyday frustrations that cannot be expressed at work or in
the home can easily spill from our fingertips to the computer monitor.
That was NOT my agenda.

Interesting point as it pertains to Jim Miller. I really was
impressed by Miller's arm when he lit things up in the 99 season. I
don't think he had the same arm in 01 or 02. I specifically remember
the Packer game in '99 that Miller came in and won. It was right
before the half, the Bears had the ball at mid field. The only play
left was a Hail Mary and I distinctly remember Madden saying there was
no way this guy could throw the ball that far. Sure enough Miller
uncorked one that almost made it to the enzone.

Don't worry bout it Fred. This is an open discussion forum.

Far as Steroids. Yes I do think Payton was on "Supplements" as am sure many
other athletes during them days did also. You have to understand, back when
Payton played, Steroids was just thought of as Deca Durabolin, Anadrol,
Winstrol, Testosterone injections, Human Growth hormone etc. Nobody cared
about off the counter GNC/Health vitamin store type products as they do
today.

Androstenedione, Creatine and other substances that are freely distributed
by most GNC and other Health/Vitamin stores are frowned upon by the Olympics
and other professional sports.

Our own QB, Jim Miller as you recall was suspended due to taking an off the
counter Supplement. If Jimmy played during the time Payton did, this type
of action would be ignored.

Am sure there were many copy cat bodybuilding/sports enhancement products
back then. Consider also, there was far less regulations and testing going
on with "Sports enhancement" products compared to what they are today. Who
knows what was in them and how safe it really was for the human body long
term?

Only several years ago did the Food/Drug administration finally started to
look into and test sports enhancement powders. Remember "Hot Stuff" I think
that's the name? This product was very very popular to young athletes and
it was sold on the market openly at GNC for several years. It turned out,
a lot of the ingredients that was on their label were untrue. They were
soon banned and you will not find this in the U.S. anytime soon.

Please note that I am NOT saying that Payton used steroids, but what you
have to understand is that what steroids allow a person to do is to
build muscles more quickly. In order to develop large muscles, the
athlete still has to engage in a very rigorous training program. That
Walter had a very rigorous training program in The Hill does not
preclude him from having used any type of steroids. Personally, I don't
believe that Walter Payton used any illegal or banned substances to
increase his strength or stamina.

Yep, That's why the natural athletes talk about Genetics. Case in point.
You take a Rudy / Bartman look alike running up that same hill training
24/7. No matter how hard he tries, he just is not gonna get bulked and pack
on 210 pounds of solid muscle naturally on a 5"4 small body frame.

> Personally, I don't believe that Walter Payton used any illegal or banned

I think he took supplements to help him recover from injuries etc etc. Is
there anything wrong with that? Nope. There was completely different set
of rules and what the NFL defined as "Steroids" back during the Payton days.
Anything sold over the counter that athletes consumed was perfectly Legal.
Anyone who refuses to believe one of their Chicago idols could not have
possibly hit a health food store back in the day and consume products to
enhance their workouts or recovery times are narrow minded.

There were plenty of Creatine/Androstenedione type products out. The FDA
did not start closely monitoring these products aka long term health risks,
confirmation of ingredient labels until about 10 years ago.

There is only one confirmed Roid User in Chicago sports today, See >>

While there is some evidence that creatine had been used in Europe and the
Soviet Union over the
past 20 to 30 years as a supplement, the searches I have done only indicate
Creatine being in the
U.S. since about the beginning of the 1990's. Most people would also argue
that Creatine, while a
supplement, is not a steroid. The reason for the ban is more closely tied
to studies currently being
conducted by the FDA related to effects on the heart by Creatine.

Now, as to the question of the use of steroids. While certainly large
muscle growth MIGHT indicate
the use of steroids, there is also the question of higher incidence of
injury with steroid use. There
is a whole new group of studies coming out related to the magnitude of
tendon injury with high performing
athletes who use steroids. The reason seems to be that, while the muscle
grows beyond the normal genetic
capacity of the muscle, the tendons do not. The tendons, then, have a
difficulty supporting the muscle, and
so tears occur.

That Walter played for so many years without ANY such injuries would at
least provide some anecdotal
evidence of no steroid use. But as the DaFlaBear stated, this thread is
SH*T and a witch hunt about
a man who dedicated his life to being a great athlete as well as simply a
good and decent person with
a goofy sense of humor. Short of handing me some sort of physical evidence
to the contrary, there is
no way anyone could ever convince me that Walter used anything other than
his work ethic to become
the athlete he was. At some level I think its indicative of the world we
live in, and the culture we seem to
be creating, where the "short cut" becomes the best way to accomplish
anything. We want results NOW,
and many are not willing to put in the effort it takes to become truly
skilled at what they do. I remember
hearing other athletes talking about what it was like to go workout for a
day with Walter, not being able to
keep up with him for that day, and looking at amazement that he would do
that running up the hill every day.
The same sort of thing was said about Jerry Rice, who developed his training
regimin after hearing about
how Walter trained.

Anyway... my two cents... for what its worth...

The real shame of all of this is that Walter Payton died because he

BZZZZT!, Wrong!! Read the latest Payton book. Walter was in line to
receive a liver. One of his last public stops to the Mayo Clinic was to
check his health to ensure his body was fit to receive a transplant. It
turned out that he was in the late stages of Bile duct cancer and the
transplant would not have saved his life. Walter, his family and close
friends knew he was going to die. It is a testament to all his surrounding
crew that they were able to keep this a secret from the media's prying eyes.
This was Walters wish to not make his probable ending, public.

Walter did not die because he could NOT get a liver transplant.
Walter had a cancerous condition of the bile ducts in the liver that
made a transplant impossible.

Maybe you should e-mail Connie and Brittney Payton and tell
them how irrelevant their Youth for Life organ donation
program is.

From the Walter and Connie Payton Foundation web site:

"Youth for Life Remembering Walter Payton is a nonprofit
campaign committed to educating young adults about the
life-giving gift of organ donation founded by Brittney Payton,
Walter's daughter, along with Mark Pendleton, Erin Kinsella,
and John McCaskey. By explaining the ease of enrolling in the
program and the ongoing need for participants, we hope to
encourage more young adults to register as donors.

This campaign, named in honor of the late Chicago Bears star
Walter Payton, will include a series of school forums on the
subject of organ donation."

Or maybe what's irrelevant is you, little3.

I think we agree on lots of things, we simply don't on Angelo. Funny thing
is while I defend him and you attack, you hope I'm right. Odd dichotomy but
it's because we're both fans. Part of being a fan is tied to history and
mine with this team goes back to watching Walter in the TV room with my dad
as a child. Walter was the greatest player I've ever seen play and his
personality made Chicago a much brighter place to be, even when the Bears
were struggling to get to the top. The original post here was made, I
believe, with best intentions. However, neither of us is naive enough to
think this thread would become anything more than a magnet for trolls.

But forget that two topics up a little bitch wanted to talk shit about our
hero Favre...childish? Yes. Ignorant, absolutely. Let's just keep these
threads from turning this rivalry into unnecessary slander. Cool? Cool.

Connie Payton knows better than anyone know the reasons why
Walter died, and she is still on a campaign to increase organ
donors. "This" is NOT irrelevant, at least not to the Walter
and Connie Payton Foundation.

Now why don't you go back to bitch-slapping your little3 and
STFU when you don't know what you're talking about.

The thread I'm assuming you're referring to was an OBVIOUS satire. Moron,
get a clue.

This only proves that you are a Bush hater. What does Kerry offer? Nothing,
but he's anit-Bush, which is what all you liberals want.

Shame on you for bringing your political agenda to a sports news group.

As for Walter Payton, just because he was "tiny" as you say, means nothing
in regards to steroid use. He was still muscular despite his smaller frame.
Typical liberal tactic, to obfuscate facts and/or truth seekers with this
bunk.

Byron, If you were such a strong proponent of organ donation. Why on earth
have you not spoken more loudly about it in the past? The best time for you
to tout your feelings would have been weeks following his death, when
everyone thought it was due to lack of a donor. Or are you just simply
jumping on the bandwagon from the bitch slapping you have received from me?

You see Byron, Frankey used the "Walter died due to lack of Organ Donation"
to emphasize the need for "Organ Donors"?.. Do you get it yet? He used the
Payton example in a Bear group to tout that he himself is an Organ donor,
then challenged everyone else here if they were also, because you see,
according to Frank, PAYTON DIED BECAUSE HE COULD NOT GET A DONOR LIVER so
it's very important for all us Bear fans to follow in his footsteps.
However, the Facts, considering, if Frankey realized Walter did in fact had
an "Donor Liver" waiting for him, and his problems were elsewhere. I highly
doubt he would be here using the Payton example to emphasize Organ donation,
huh?

But I realize these are again stats and facts, something you choose to
ignore, even in Football....heh

Am I getting to you Bryon? Remember Byron, when one holds a long grudge, it
is not good for ones health. I suggest you take your post "Bitch Slapping"
syndrome and ask Doctor Phil for help.

It doesn't matter what Frank said. I replied to what you
said. You said that because Payton didn't die for lack of an
organ, organ donations are irrelevant to his situation.

I suggested you e-mail Connie and tell her to put an end to
the organ donation efforts of the Walter and Copnnie Payton
Foundation, if indeed organ donations are "irrelevant." Have
you? Why not?

You could get a clue and shut up, but those two things, like
most of the rest of life, are well beyond your comprehension,
so just go on back to paddling your little3, little3.

Oh you want to talk about famous families who ignore "issues" and only get
involved with (ex. Organ donations) when someone in their family is
afflicted, huh?

Come on now Byron. Was the Payton familiy involved with organ donation
prior to Walter's illness? You and I know the answer to this.

So are you saying Organ donation is "More Important" now because the Payton
family said so?

How bout the millions of normal joes who have passed before Walter?

Oh well you Dumbfuck, I made you look the fool again!!, !!!!!*LMFAO*!!!!!

Big:

Isn't that the way it works though?

Let's face it, Superman didn't care much about people with spinal cord
injuries until he
had one, right? Same goes with Michael J. Fox and MS. Who would pay as
much attention
to ALS if it weren't for its name sake Lou Gerhig? As though he was the
first person to contract it.

Our world is often driven by our "heroes". While Christoper Reeve having a
spinal cord injury was
not a good thing in and of itself, that he has grabbed onto that cause,
raised millions, advocated for the
research, and SO MUCH has come from it means that the normal joe and joette
may have the opportunity
to benefit from the research. Fox has also been a warrior in front of
congressional panels fighting for research
money, and some of that research, I believe, is paying off.

I know what you were saying though... Walter did not die because of a lack
of a liver for transplant -- it
was the cancer that spread that made it impossible. If his name, attached
to the cause of signing up
for organ donations, saved additional lives because some football fan that
appreciated watching Walter run
signed the donor line on their drivers license, then maybe some good comes
from it.

It seems to me that Walter's name is better placed in a campaign for
increasing organ donorship than selling shoes...
right?

Just my two cents...

Big Dumbass,

Most people don't become involved with a cause until they have been
personally or emotionally affected by it. That is normal.

You make a fool of someone!!! That is impossible. Someone would have to be
brain dead to look like a fool next to you. You are a complete idiot and I
personally don't know why you don't understand that? Oh, I guess I answered
my own question.

No, I never said that at all.

No, I don't.

No. You said organ donations were irrelevant to Payton's
situation, and I provided proof that Payton's foundation was
actively working to increase organ donations. You have so far
provided not one single statement contrary to that fact, and
have only tried to dodge the issue, as you are doing again here.

How are they relevant to your post?

No, little3, you only made yourself look like a fool. Again.

Heh,

I thought we already discussed this, Byron. You see my reply was simply to
Frank for using his example of Payton's death to call for Organ donations.
In summary,. Payton did not pass away because there was lack of a donor, he
was corrected, which made his example of using Payton's death + Organ
donations irrelevant. Get the picture? If you want to continue to spin
it into something other then that, Hell bro, this is a free country, You
welcome to !!!

Glad it got your Panties in a stir tho !!

Do you see much joy of living on the
Fox news network?
