The beat writers were interested in Edwards, not Polian. Before the
draft Polian said he wasn't looking at a FB position in the draft.

They were compensatory picks given by the NFL for the teams who have
more FAs lost than signed FAs.
Officially, we now have TWO FULLBACKS. Panthers agreed to terms with 18
undrafted FAs yesterday. One of them is a FB from Nebraska, Brian
Schuster. He was primarily used as a situational, complementary FB.
But some draft "experts" (who BTW proved that they were not experts,
after all) rated him relatively high (given that FBs were not rated high
in the draft). He might step into the backup role, if Panthers don't
make any further move to address FB position.
I'll update my website soon. I already have 78 players on the roster,
that I've kept up. We only have room for 12 players now....

i was really disappointed that the 49ers traded up and took the best
one in the draft, even more so when it was the pick right before ours.
there is a significant dropoff in talent from that fullback, who's
name escapes me, but there are still a good handful of good blocking
fullbacks left.
Supposedly, Polian didn't feel like any one of them was worth using a
draft pick for. It went against his entire draft strategy to pick a
player he wasn't thrilled with, and he'd planned to pick Rick Terry in
the 1st round. Carruth's availability changed that, as Polian believes
it is foolish to pass up an 'impact player,' which Carruth is. Polian
has said that he would wait and see which free agents were available
after the draft. Were there any good fullbacks left over, because with
the exception of Griffith & Christian, I don't think that there was
anyone promising in the free agent market?
And excuse my ignorance, but what was the deal with so many extra picks?
I expected to be able to figure what pick # the panthers were through
simple addition, but there were 29 extra picks, some beginning I think
in the 4th round - nearly a whole extra round. Where did they come
from?
They are awarded to teams like the Steelers after teams like the Panthers
take all their has-been, aged, talents every year. ;)
Seriously however, I believe that the "extra picks" you refer to are in
fact compensation picks. Compensation picks are awarded to NFL teams by the
commisioner each year. The picks gained are used in addition to the
standard set of 7 picks although comp. pick can't be traded. The position
and numer of compensation picks is decided by the number of free agent
losses an individual team loses, and the success of those free agents in
the year that they left.
