Tubby needs bigger summer than Superman

Rick Bozich

» View previous columns
Change is what Tubby Smith promised after another University of Kentucky
basketball season flatlined without finding the Final Four.
Maybe all he was talking about was a new strength coach with the bark to
make his players push more weights. Maybe he was preparing fans for the
flight of four underclassmen who have waved goodbye since March.
All I can do is speculate and say this: Smith needs a bigger summer than
Superman.

OTS gets billing as a capable coach. No problem. $200k per month
though? Good gig if you can get it, and pull your team out of national
prominence (except for all the fan rantings).

You are just a few kooks. The majority of UK fans support Coach Smith and
the program. Simply because the majority of fans are not as vocal as others
you assume your opinion to be dominant. You are part of the fringe. The
silent majority of the Big Blue Nation is behind our team and our coach.

reflective of MOST fans.....just chatter on the internet, crap!!

The "internet is full of a lot of crap" is a witty response for a
coach who is quickly coming to the end of his tenure at UK. Your faithful
are still around Orlando, but let's see how quick they are to defend you at
the end of this coming season, which most of us expect to be even more
thrilling than this past year.

Coach Smith keeps talking about "good recruits". He is going to have
to have better than good to compete next year. We all know that his
recruiting is suspect. I wonder if he is trying to fool himself with these
comments. He is not fooling the knowledgeable Kentucky fans.

How pathetic. Is UK also going to schedule High Point, Georgetown,
Centre and Transy to boost their schedules next year? We are rapidly
declining as one of the top basketball programs which is apparent from the
lack of any top signers. Maybe Coach K or Roy Williams could give someone on
the staff some pointers.

Full of Crap and Recruiting

We the fans react when a coach seems to sit on his butt because he can
still have a good season (not great) and make his 2 million plus salary.

This taken from a news source

7. Which headline coach will be the last to leave a gym?

Having covered recruiting the past 17 years, I've witnessed many a
scene, but few rival seeing coaches like North Carolina's Roy Williams and
Arizona's Lute Olson sitting in some high school gym in Vegas past midnight.
They are two of the hardest-working recruiters in the land. Since they lead
such power programs as North Carolina and Arizona, the assumption is that
they don't have to work hard, but Williams and Olson are hands-on the whole
month.

You state the obvious. Sometimes it needs stating but I believe most
understand that phrase as an opinion. Either way, if you're happy with

You believe Arizona Basketball is on and 'should be' on the level of
Kentucky? Considering Kentucky Basketball accomplishments for over a hundred
years. Give me some comparable Arizona accomplishments over the same 100
year Kentucky Basketball Accomplishments. Not there! anyway you spin it.
Reality sets in!

I believe, Kentucky Basketball is way above an Arizona or Duke. By default
Tubby has lowered Kentucky Basketball for his 9 year tenure to the point
that yes Arizona and Duke look much better than Kentucky Basketball.
Kentucky Basketball long term, plus the dizzy heights we have seen by
Kentucky difference maker coaches and Kentucky Administrations is far above
Arizona accomplishments till Tubby Coach came to Kentucky. The key to the
problem is Tubby Coach! UGH!

I didn't say Arizona basketball was as good as UK's tradition. A fellow
poster copied and pasted an article from espn.com that claimed Lute Olsen
and Roy Williams were the two hardest working coaches in college basketball
because they sat in a Las Vegas gym well past midnight. My previous post
was to show that every coach struggles the way ours does.

Did anyone happen to see Coach Hall on the 11 o'clock news last night
praising Coach Smith for his consistency and ability to rise to the top?

I may be slow but I did not get that meaning from the post "Arizona

hasn't made it to the Final Four since 2001. They were knocked
out in the 2nd round last year. Luteball Stinks!"

In any event, of course every coach has challenges and struggles to
reach the FF. As has been written in this ng many times, there are many
that believe the problems with UK basketball under OTS are much more
than wins and losses. They have been chronicled ad nauseum (some might
say) here.

But, I also believe William has it right in saying UK basketball has a
different standard when it comes to 'success' than other schools. By
making Tubby Smith the highest-paid coach in college basketball, the UK
athletic department must have similar thoughts.

I think you are the one who missed the boat. The post to which you
refer was posted in response to your false claim that just us kook's in
here want Tubby gone. It was a cut and past of several peoples
opinions from yesterdays LHL stating just that very thing.

Some how you come up with the not since 2001 argument comparing
Arizona's plight to UK's. (UK hasn't been since 1998 BTW)

When in fact you were proven to be wrong again, so as always you
spin, or ignore the facts.

Ok LJE, I've been patient but BBF is pretty close to what I was already
thinking, but was trying to be open. Your posts are mostly quips,
cutting remarks. Like it or not, that is the perception. Seemingly no
one can converse with you. You have picked, cut on some posters who are
regarded as decent folks (as ng's go). I happen to actually know some
of these people so I know their backgrounds, education level,
intelligence, history, etc. That's when your comments seem particularly
out of touch. Your choice. The result is few will have anything to do
with you. Not because you seemingly support OTS, but because of the way
you go about it. Pick another sport if you want. Maybe someone will
join in. Doubtful if you continue as you have. Some of us have been
posting here some time, some a lot longer, and we've learned how to read
into each other's posts. We make jokes back and forth even though the
posts are there for everyone to read. Not so with you. Your first
impression has remained, mostly. Like it or not, most everyone here
will agree with that even if they do not respond. I'm finished spending
my time, but for my final comment to you, below.

Final thoughts.......Smith, in my opinion, is not the worst coach in
America. Certainly he is capable as a coach in many ways. So was Denny
Crum. But times change. I believe Smith is not a good fit at UK (I
never wanted him to come to UK because I saw his style at Tulsa/UGA).
He has caused the uproar at UK, imo. The high expectations have been
there all along. All the actions he takes that make him Tubby Smith are
the package. Playing his son, hanging on to average coaches, lethargic
play, player dissent, many off-court player problems, suspect
recruiting, inconsistent performance, poor public communicator/shuns the
limelight which is UK basketball (which helps form the image, fair or
not). Some believe otherwise and that is good. At least, Barnhart's
credibility as an AD is in the balance. He has hitched his career to
OTS, perhaps unknowingly at the time. I believe that is why he came out
publicly a few times this spring/summer. He has learned the
significance of it all. OTS is CEO of UK basketball he said, his to
make or break. For $200k per month the expectations for an entertaining
collegiate basketball product are very high. OTS found out this past
season that fans were being patient the past few years, the expectations
of Kentucky basketball greatness are still there. If you support the
program as it is, again, that's great. Spread your word. I will do the
same.

The meaning was ignoring the facts that disputed his claim. His MO
is to deflect and ignore the questions and the facts. It had nothing to
do with his claim that it is just us kook's who want Tubby gone.

Check out this post I found the other day....

Joseph
--
Kentucky Basketball is more than wins and losses, it is about
having pride in the program......

The following is an analysis of our 3 year high (03-05) made by Crow:

Kentucky under coach Tubby Smith won a spectacular number of games in a
three year span from 2001-2004 and that period is often referred to in
defending coach Smith's record at Kentucky despite the fact that in each of
those seasons we lost to inferior lower ranked teams in the NCAA tournament
short of the Final Four.

Let's examine a few factors and see if we can make sense of how we piled up
more wins than any other program during that period:

Out-of-conference factors:

- Due to repeated 10 loss seasons Kentucky changed their out-of-conference
schedule to add more "cupcake" teams.
- Louisville was under a new coach and system.
- Indiana was wildly inconsistent under a new coach.
- North Carolina was in a state of shock while undergoing one of their worst
periods in history while changing coaches 3 times in a 10 year period.

In-conference factors:

- Arkansas imploded with the firing of Nolan Richardson after lackadaisical
performances.
- Ol' Miss was preparing to oust Rod Barnes for phoning it in year after
year.
- Florida was entrenched in a weak effeminate brand of basketball that would
take a roster overhaul and a brilliant new assistant to fix.
- LSU was recovering from a 3 year probationary period for NCAA violations.
- Alabama narrowly avoided NCAA sanctions for an assistant creating a slush
fund for basketball recruits and was recovering from an NCAA investigation
that put their football team on 5 years probation.
- Tennessee was also suffering under a coach that was happy to phone it in
and would later be fired.

So what we had in that "great period" of a Smith led UK basketball program
was a "perfect storm" for regular season success. Our out-of-conference
schedule was revamped to include more cupcakes, our traditional rivals were
at historically low levels of performance, and our in-conference foes were
all embroiled in turmoil and lackadaisical performance. Thus, we coasted
through comparatively easy seasons only to be upset in the NCAA tournament.

The problem now, however, is that most all of those programs have righted
the ship. We no longer are picking on weakened programs with disinterested
coaches. These teams have all seriously addressed their deficiencies and are
all once again forces to be reckoned with.

So what have we done? Our recruiting is at disastrous levels in that we
seemingly cannot attract top flight talent in our front court. Our fan base
is entrenched and divided. Our program is in debt for a new practice
facility. Our AD says his coach is the one that runs the basketball program
and he as little or no say in its operation.

Things have come full circle now, folks. We are the ones at the bottom
looking up and these other teams are going to get their licks in. Better
buckle up, this is going to be a rough transition until we find the strength
to make the types of changes all these other programs have made in order to
position ourselves once again amongst the elite teams in college basketball.

Tubby has outlived his 'bounce of 98', outlived his bubble.
His bubble has burst with the fans a long time ago.

The media and 'hangers oners', have propagandized Tubby satisfies.
The tremendous high of the Pitino bounce disappeared early on Tubby's
tenure. The Tubby sleep walk put the fans into a hypnotic stance and
gradually killed the fan expectation. Lowering fan expectation is the
solution for Tubby since he promotes the idea of parity because his teams
under achieve with Tubby Coach!

So Mitch's solution could be contingent on reducing our fan base to Tubby
lover fans. Shazam problem solved. Except the winningest team of all
time(our exciting Kentucky Basketball Wildcats) will have bitten the dust.
Such a waste, no reason that our administration should kill the goose that

I think Mr. Barnhart has taken off his rose colored glass. He left Tubby
out on the limb to hang all by himself. Tubby is CEO and runs the program.

I'd suspect OTS is in the same boat as Mr. Thomas in NYC

Accusing others of pomposity while deriding them for being "illiterate"

Very well put, Derek. I retract. However I still claim that the Coach
Smith haters here are unwilling to listen to any other side of the argument.
They simply post the same rhetoric over and over again. No new ideas. Just

And there is enough truth in that statement that I have not challenged it.
What I do challenge is any assumption that everyone in this newsgroup who
is critical of Coach Smith is also a "hater." We're not, although I think
those of us who aren't are in the minority.

And I'll also agree that there's a repetitious positive feedback loop in
much of this discussion, where much of the same thing is repeated but
differs in vehemence.

On the other hand, we've often heard or read Coach Smith repeat himself
about how things would be different only to see more of the same. So I'm
not certain that it's a disqualifying criticism.

I have to allow different strokes to different folks who are sincere in
obtaining the 'same ends'.

Most posters who are in opposition to Tubby Coach opine(as do I) think Tubby
is past the point of credibility with empty promises, dull basketball, poor
recruiting, helpless in the NCAA Tournaments. The inability to handle first
and second round fodder(for a no. 1 seed in several instances) and the good
teams take Tubby to the wood shed entirely too often(being Kentucky).

The pre-season schedule with North Carolina(allowed freshmen to win in Rupp
allowed North Carolina's Champions to run all over him even though we were a
high seed.

Kansas had a feast on Tubby, Indiana feasted on Tubby and on and on as to
constantly under-achieving with mid-major teams, as well as lesser teams.

The insult to injury are the promises of real change,, never happens.

Talking down to our fans just recently saying how he was just one of many
coaches looking for players. A Kentucky Coach should have an advantage and
stand out. Tubby recruits his pick of 4 year players; major players seem to
shun Tubby Recruiting for whatever reasons.

I admire the folks in this ng who stand up for Kentucky Basketball over a
coach who is having lots of problems with many segments of his coaching at
Kentucky. I allow unique approaches for the same end!

I don't see any haters. I see fans who want Kentucky Basketball to be
better, and feel Tubby has had his shot. Feel that Tubby Coach Space should
be free for a new start with a new coach who just may do better. Those
posters are entitled to voice their opinion and not be ridiculed, demonized,
or called bad fans. Tell us why Tubby is so great.

However if you want to call me names,, go for it. I just want my space on
the Kentucky Wildcat Basketball Forum to voice my thoughts. And that is
good. Voice your thoughts, but don't deny me of my podium rights(soap box)!

Fair enough. But sometimes it's similar to hangin' with your buddies
and tellin' stories. Open for the world to read, yes. There was a time
when the newsgroup was much different in its mix (those for or against
OTS as head coach of UK). In some ways tough to demonize those who
remained or joined at a different time. Makes it seem one-sided where,
if those "supporters" had stayed, might be different. People stop (or
begin) posting for all different reasons, which are unimportant.

Would be interesting to know the numbers that read but never post (which
is fine; I did for a long time). Ratio of 100:1, 1,000:1???? And this
is just one group, not even affiliated with one of the internet-based
sports services or other more easily accessed areas.

I'll hazard a guess that the primary change has been that most of the fans
who are disillusioned have stopped participating so that the remaining
posters are those who are more passionate about the program. There'd be
additional loss as USENET use has declined in general and as more web-based
forums have become available. Although, I'd hazard to guess that other
forums are showing the same skewed participation.

But the opposite of passion is apathy. If people are still here and are
still posting criticism, it's because they still care.

You must mean back in 1997. Trust me this ng became very
polarized by 1999. I knew Smith was a problem by the first
month of that season. He didn't have a clue how to teach
people how to play big time college basketball. He still
doesn't.

I've been posting in this ng for 15 years or more off and
on. Trust me on this. The ng has just caught up to where
many of us were in 1999. Many of the people who argued
against us are now gone because they were shown to be wrong.
Only the people who can ignore reality are still here
defending Smith.

I do not remember the specific years but yes, around that time. I
started visiting this ng around 2000 or so. Didn't spend much time at
all but it seemed there were many more supporters of OTS and KY58 was
ringmaster (a little tongue in cheek but based on completely outsider
observations of the time). Even KY threw in the towel last season.

At least with KY his IQ, vocabulary and self-esteem seemed sufficient
for him to not resort to the nitpicky stuff, trash-talking, talking down
others with attempted personal attacks (virtually impossible without
personal knowledge of the person, hence attempted), all the while still
promoting his view. Would love to see him come back on the scene. A
wealth of UK basketball knowledge he was.

Good morning King Ghidora, good to see you.

Reality is easier to see after the fact than(now, it's very obvious no
doubt, just review the sports literature daily) in the early days of Tubby
Tenure. You are very perceptive, knowledgeable(wow! you know KY Sports).
Very good in expressing yourself.

We indeed are at a very vulnerable bench mark(down low) in Kentucky
Basketball presently. Do you see the continuing downward spiral past Tubby
leaving. When do you think he will leave? Will the Nation have it's way in
wanting to preserve and improve Kentucky's lot?

My sense is that The Big Blue Nation has awakened to 'Tubby Reality'.
What's your take on a timeline for the next 3 years or more?

I think most of the Tubby Supporters are aware of your early predictions in
reading Tubby Tea Leaves as relating to Kentucky Basketball. My question is
how to get to Barnhart with the right people, in order to save our Kentucky
Basketball Icon?
I would like to see some Tubby supporters help us turn Kentucky around. I
have seen a few have the courage to change and push for Kentucky Basketball.
Be nice to see more, would make it easier with a consensus for saving our
program.

We had to go down in order for the majority of our fans to finally get a
feel for what you saw right away with Tubby Leadership. Too bad reality
takes so long catching on.

I hope we can survive this meltdown as well as we did with the Sutton
meltdown. What do you think?

Thanks King Ghidora, good to see ya!

Seems like the ones that are left are the ones who from the beginning
were raising the warning flags. What people don't understand is that
we did NOT want it to turn out this way. We were hoping we would be
wrong and Tubby would continue the greatness of the program. Alas, we
were correct and now everyone is suffering.

You mean you're not happy that Tubbyball imploded?

Just kidding...;-) I recall that was one of the old OTS

Everyone here wants Kentucky Basketball to rule, not just
participate. I have to ask myself sometimes, what are they

Your question re; what are they teaching these kids today.
I recall Coach Wooden watched Kentucky and UCLA play in California.
Coach Wooden was a great coach and paid attention to details, offense and
defense. Coach Wooden became very upset and said something akin to your
question. Coach Wooden was critical of both UCLA and Kentucky's Coach Smith.
I believe Coach Wooden's reaction to watching Tubby Stall Ball and whatever
UCLA was running gives an official clue that Tubby Coach was not kosher. The

A poor critique from the master, Coach Wooden.
In retrospect I am thinking; Coach Wooden a Marquee Coach of all time, came
to the arena to watch possibly the two most storied college basketball
programs of 'all time', and he is greeted with Tubby Stall Ball. Some kind
of shock no doubt! Wow!

I like sports for many reasons and allow individual coaches to win any way
they can(being honorable of course); however the lattitude and depth at a
UCLA and Kentucky is narrowed simply because of the greatness. The
'greatness' becomes a factor to keep on succeeding. Kentucky in 1996 thru
1998 and beyond could have recruited most any great recruit, most anywhere
and anytime.

Kentucky had a 'Kentucky Advantage' in recruiting almost unbelievable;
Vision of a great recruit; Kentucky Basketball Wildcats play a game which
allows players to shoot, defend, rebound, handle the ball, physically wear
their opponets to the point of being super tired, mentally wear on the
opponent in the course of the whole game that we(opponent) can't win.
Kentucky keeps comming at you, comming at you, till they win.

So if Kentucky has the exciting game for great players to use all their
talent, and win most games, win most conference titles, win most NCAA
Tournaments(only UCLA has more), and is the center of attention by the
media, and the biggie; Big Blue Nation Fans who idolize and follow the team
to the ends of the earth; making them feel 'special' to play at Kentucky.
Wow! talk about player and coach appeal to be center fold of The Kentucky
Basketball Wildcat! Momentum which enables a coach to re-load and never have
to rebuild.

Tubby has squandered those Kentucky Advantages for 9 years. Within the span
of Tubby's tenure, I am thinking those huge Kentucky Advantages have lost
the lustre. Sad

You have heard of the 'perpetual motion machine', Tubby came into Kentucky
at a time when he was in possession(of a perpetual motion reloading machine)
of the hottest college basketball team, anywhere;

We will return to greatness, won't we?

Thanks Joseph!

Recruiting: Tayshaun Prince, Keith Bogans (4th leading scorer all time),
Gerald Fitch, Chuck Hayes (arguably the best representative of UK basketball
all-time), all in the NBA. Rondo, Crawford, and Morris, all great recruits.

Player Development: Keith Bogans, Marquis Estill, Gerald Fitch, Cliff
Hawkins, Bobby Perry, Erik Daniels, Jamal Magliore, Chuck Hayes, all made
better players through Coach Smith's system. Just wait for Carter,
Crawford, and Morris to step up this year.

Offense: It's not Pitinoball. Pitino is not coming back. Get over it. We
still win games, and a win is a win is a win.

Defense: Coach Smith is one of the best defensive fundamental teachers in
the game today. So we don't press for 40 minutes anymore. See above.

Program Management: I will speak to this, Joseph, when you clarify your
meaning.

You think Coach Smith's style of play is old-fashioned yet you cite a coach

Methinks someone needs to learn the difference between "criticism" and
"attack."

Despite what our mothers may have told us, sometimes you do need to say
things that aren't nice rather than saying nothing at all.
