John Aikins

Fuquay-Varina High, Fuquay-Varina, NC
The 2-A Player of the Year in North Carolina. Has played a
number of positions for Coach Graham Myrick, including tight end,
defensive and offensive tackle. Earned all-conference accolades,
plus all-East, and all-Triangle honors from the News &
Observer. Selected to play for North Carolina in the Shrine Bowl,
and selected for the East-West game. Also received a pair of
track monograms in high school. Joins former high school
teammates Chris Wrenn and Wade Burton.
Lennard Bartlett
6-5, 305
Northeastern High, Elizabeth City, NC
A first team all-state selection, he could contribute on the
offensive and defensive front. Tabbed as an all-stater by the
Associated Press and the Greensboro Daily Record, he was also
listed on Super Prep's all-Mid-Atlantic unit, and the News &
Observer's all-East squad as a senior. Selected to play in the
Shrine Bowl, and the East-West Game. Started both ways for
Coach TOm Merritt, with former NCSU All-American Dennis
Byrd working as his line coach. Also earned all-region honors as
a sophomore and junior.
Keith Battle

A.C. Reynolds High, Asheville, NC
A tailback and defensive back who played in just 4 games as a
senior while battling injuries. Did tally 5 TDs in those 4 games.
Helped Coach Scott Connor's team to a 12-1 record. As a junir,
he received all-conference and Asheville Citizen all-Western
North Carolina accolades. Totaled 1675 yards in offense as a
junior while playing in the "Notre Dame Box" offense. A
basketball all-conference selection, he averaged 18 points and 13
rebounds per outing as a senior. Played on the 1988 4-A
basketball championship squad with current Wolfpacker Neil
Auer. also earned all-conference honors on the track where he
earned 3 monograms. Plans to study business management.
Daryl Beard
6-2, 220
Fairfield High, Fairfield, AL
An outstanding athelete who paced the Fairfield defense from his
linebacker position last fall. Chosen on the all-Metro and
all-Jefferson County all-star squads by the Birmingham World
News. Posted 70 tackles and recovered 4 fumbles while playing
for Coach Glen Thompson. Also earned all-Metro honors as a
junior. Received 3 wrestling monograms and played basketball as
a freshman. As a senior he placed thired in the state in the
heavyweight wrestling division. Expects to major in criminal
justice.
Chuck Cole
6-5, 275
North Marion High, Ocala, FL
An excellent prep center, he was listed as an honorable mention
All-American by USA Today, and recruiting analyst Tom
Lemming. Also earned all-state honors and was the Gainesville
Sun's 4-A Player of the Year. Was invited to the play in the
Florida-Georgia All-Star game, and the Florida North-South
All-Star game. Received all-area notice as a sophomore and
junior under Coach Dennis Meunier. An excellent student who
plans on enrolling with a double major in accounting and computer
science.

5-11, 170
Wills High, Marietta, GA
A three year starter at quarterback for Coach Mike Lusk, he also
starred in the defensive backfield. Listed among the top players on
Cobb County for 3 straight seasons at quarterback, he was named
to the second team of the unit as a defensive back. Completed 44
of 86 passes as a senior, good for 750 yards and 11 TDs. He also
made 3 interceptions in the defensive backfield. Also a star on the
track he set school records in the 100-meters (10.6), and the 200
meters (22.1). Will study speech communications.
Derrick Ervin
5-11, 185
Carver High, Birmingham, AL
An outstanding defensive back prospect, he was named to the
all-state, all-Metro, and all-City teams by the Birmingham
World News. Selected as the finest linebacker in the metro area
last fall, he delivered 100 tackles, recovered 2 fumbles, and
intercepted a pass. As a junior he earned all-City and
all-Jefferson County honors under Coach Willie Peake. Also
competed in track and with the basketball team. His brother, Zack,
played at Tennessee-Chattanooga under current NCSU assistant
coach Joe Pate. A strong student who plans to enroll in civil
engineering.
Ledel George
6-0, 204
Havelock High, Havelock, NC
A versatile athlete who was Associated Press' first team
all-state quarterback, and an honorable mention all-state
defensive back. Received all-East 3-A honors from the News &
Observer, and all-Mid-Atlantic recognition from Super Prep. As a
senior, he accounted for 34 TDs (16 rushing, 16 passing, one
kickoff return, and one interception return) while leading Coach
Wilbur Sasser's squad to a 12-1-1 record. During his 3 year
career Havelock posted a 29-0-1 regular season record. Punted
in his final 2 seasons, averaging 38.5 yards per punt. Played safety
in the Shrine Bowl, and quarterback in the East-West all-star
game. Earned all-conference and all-East accolades as a junior.
Also played basketball, leading the Coastal conference in scoring
with 24.3 ppg as a senior. Tabbed for the all-league hoop squad
and was chosedn as the area player of the year. Will major in
business.
Ray Griffis
5-9, 155
Cummings High, Burlington, NC
Became the all-time leading career and single season pass
received in North Carolina during his stellar career under Coach
Dave Gutshall. During his 3 varsity seasons, he caught 74 passes
for over 2700 yards. As a senior he had 75 receptions for over
1100 yards. Led cummings to a 15-0 record and the state 3-A
title. Named to the Associated Press and Greensboro News &
Record all-state teams, as well as the Super Prep
all-Mid-Atlantic squad. A three time all-conference selection as
a wide receiver, and as a defensive back. The team MVP as a
sophomore and as a junior. Also earned a pair of track monograms,
placing third in the state 3-A 400-meters event as a junior. Plans
to study accounting.
Robert Hinton
6-2, 185
Garner High, Garner, NC
A local product who is an outstanding wide receiver prospect.
Named to the all-East and all-Triangle squads by the News &
Observer. Also honored as the County Player of the Year, he was
an honorable mention all-state selection. Caught 2 passes in the
Shrine Bowl including a 27-yard TD as North Carolina won 14-7.
In 3 seasons his team won 36 of 40 games as Garner took the
1987 4-A state title under Coach Hal Stewart. Lettered in both
basketball and track. Received all-conference notice as a junior on
the hardwood. A former teammate of current sophomore Anthony
Barbour.
Tyler Lawrence
6-3, 215
Page High, Greensboro, NC
An honorable mention All-American on the USA Today list, he is
a linebacker with a promising future. Received all-state notice
from the Greensboro News & Record, and was a member of the
Super Prep all-Mid-Atlantic unit. Led the victorious North
Carolina defensve with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery at the
Shrine Bowl. Also chosen to play in the East-West All-Star
game. The 1988 Metro 4-A Conference Player of the Year. Also
earned all-conference notice as a junior. In 3 varsity seasons
Page posted a 33-4 record under Coach Marion Kirby. A 3 year
starter on the hoopsquad. Following in the footsteps of Page
alums and former NCSU stars Micheal Brooks and Haywood
Jeffires, plus current Wolfpackers Clayton Henry and William
Turner. Expected to major in accounting.
Sean Maguire
6-3, 230
E.E. Smith High, Fayettville, NC
Delivered 75 solo tackles, including 14 sacks as a senior defensive
lineman. Helped carry Coach Dean Saffos' squad to the state
playoffs in 1988. Chosen to play in the East-West All-Star game.
An all-Mid-South 4-A Conference and honorable mention
all-state selection. As a junior he delivered on 53 solo stops, 9
sacks, and 6 passes blocked. During his sophomore year at North
Pulaski High in Jacksonville, AR, he lettered as a fullback. Also
threw the shot and the discuss at North Pulaski, qualifying for the
district championships as a sophomore.
David Merritt
6-2, 255
Milbrook High, Raleigh, NC
An all-star linebacker who also worked as a fullback during his
prep career. Chosen to play in the East-West All-Star Game. An
all-Cap Nine 4-A Conference selection, he was also listed opn
the News and Observer's all-East and all-Triangle units.
Recorded 70 tackles in just 8 games as a senior under Coach Earl
Smith. Played his final campaign with a broken thumb, then broke
his other thumb, and sprained his ankle during the season. Made
his team's "hit of the week" in each of his 8 outings. As a junior he
saw actions at linebacker and fullback. Also a big contributor for
the basketball team. A strong student who plans to enroll in civil
engineering.
Mike Nichols
6-1, 209
Moeller High, Cincinatti, OH
A second team all-state seelction by btoh wire services, this
linebacker also earned all-league and all-Southwest District
honors as a senior. Helped carry his highly-regarded Moeller
High team to a 9-2 record under Coach Steve Klonee in 1988. Led
the team with 97 tackles, including 13 hits behind the line of
scrimmage, and 3 sacks. Was second on the team in tackles as a
junior with 66 stops. Also competed on the track team, runing the
100-meters (11.0) and 200-meters (23.9). President of the
student government. Plans to enroll in speech communications.
Loren Pinkney

Hardaway High, Columbus, GA
Earned a series of accolades after a tremendous senior campaign
at inside linebacker. Named area defensive player of the year and
all-Bi-City following the 1988 season. A four year letter winner
for Caoch John Drew. As a senior, he recorded 97 tackles, 3
interceptions, and 7 caused fumbles. Listed as an alternate for the
Georgia North-South All-Star Game. Also played basketball for
3 seasons. An excellent student who plans to major in
engineering.
Steve Pokrant
6-3, 285
Woodland Hills High, Pittsburgh, PA
Younger brother of current Wolfpacker Rich Pokrant, he is an
offensive line prospect with tremendous potential. Named to the
Pittsburgh Gazzette's "Fabulous 22" unit, as well as the
Pittsburgh Press all-star team. Also earned All-Quad-A East
Conference honors and was listed on the Western Pennsylvania
Interscholastic League All-Star team. His prep team, under the
direction of Coach George Novak, was ranked 7th nationally by
USA Today. Received second-team all-conference honors as a
junior, and was recognized on the Pittsburgh Press all-star squad.
Finished with 3 varsity monograms.
Mike Price
6-5, 270
Pisgah High, Canton, NC
One of the finest offensive linemen in the state, he was tabbed for
the Shrine Bowl, and the East-West Game. Listed on the
Asheville Citizen's all-Western North Carolina unit, and the
all-Mountain 3-A conference team. Helped his team win the
conference title, and advance to the state playoffs under coach
Carol Wright. Played both ways as a sophomore, but was
sidelined with a knee injury during most of his junior season. A
serious weightlifter, he placed 4th at the North Carolina
Powerlifting Championships in 1987.
Mike Reid
6-2, 200
Broome High, Spartanburg, SC
A two-time all-state selection at defensive back. Twice listed
among the top defenders in South Carolina by the Greenville
News, and the Columbia State. Played in the Shrine Bowl. As a
senior, he was named the Player of the Year in the Peach Blossom
3-A Conference. Listed as the 13th best prospect in South
Carolina by The Poop Sheet. Totaled 83 assists, 96 first hits, and
25 solo tackles, plus 2 INTs and a fumble recovery last fall under
Coach Jim Few. Played just 3 games as a sophomore before
injuring his knee. Earned a pair of track monograms, and played
jayvee basketball. Will enroll in a business related curriculum.
Ryan Schultz
6-5, 230
McEacharn High, Atlanta, GA
An all-star offensive tackle in high school, he is expected to move
to tight end in his first collegiate season. Tabbed as an all-area
honoree by the Atlanta Journal Constitution and the Marietta
Daily Journal. Teams built a three year record of 37-3 under Coach
Jim Dorsey. As a junior, he received all-region recognition as his
team reached the state title game. Also competed on the track and
basketball squads. An honor student in high school, he will major
in business administration.
Aubrey Shaw
5-11, 205
Fork Union Military Academy, VA
Hartsville, SC
An all-state selection in football, basketball, and baseball as a
prep senior in 1987. He continued his outstanding career at Fork
Unnon last fall. Played in the 1987 Shrine Bowl, and the 1988
South Carolina North-South All-Star Baseball Game. Named the
South Carolina Offensive Player of the Year by the Greenville
News, and the South Carolina High School Sports Report. Orlando
Sentenial listed him as one of the "Dixie Dozen" for the best
players in the Southeast. A true three-sport star at Hartsville
(SC) High he was a three-time all-region honoree in all three
sports. Although FUMA used a three-back rotation, he still
rushed for 1057 yards for Coach John Shuman. Named the team
MVP and best offensive played. Led Hartsville to the state title
as a senior while rushing for 1818 yards and 17 TDs. Scored 3
TDs and piled up a championship gamed record 259 yards in the
title game. Plans to major in business.
Eric Swann
6-5, 290
Western Harnett High, Lillington, NC
A Super Prep All-American, he is rated as one of the top
defensive linemen in NC. Received all-state honors from the
Greensboro News and Record, and was listed on the News &
Observer's all-East and all-Triangle teams. A started in the
Shrine Bowl, he was also selected to play in the North Carolina
East-West All-Star Game. Averaged 9.5 tackles and 1 sack per
game as a senior for Coach Kenneth Moss. Also earned all-East
and all-Triangle notice as a junior. A conference and district
wrestling champion as a junior. Placed second in the state track
meet in the discus. Will study either speech communications or
economics.
Eric Taylor
6-4, 265
Spartanburg High, Spartanburg, SC
An all-state offensive lineman who was listed as South
Carolina's 25th best prospect by The Poop Sheet. Chosen for the
Greenville News' and Columbia State's all-state squads. Named
to the all-region units following his junior and senior seasons.
Played in the 1988 Shrin Bowl. In 3 varisty seasons, his team
posted a 33-6 record. Played for Coach Allen Sitterie, a former
Wolfpack offensive lineman. Prep teammate Todd Ward will also
join the Pack this fall. His brother plays football at South Carolina.
Plans to major in business.
Pat Threatt
6-3, 230
Thompson High, Alabaster, AL
Comes to State after earning all-state honors as a defensive
lineman. Selected to play in the prestigious Alabama-Mississippi
All-Star Game. Tabbed by Birmingham World News for the
all-state, all-Metro, and all-Jefferson County squads. Posted 60
tackles, including 39 solo stops for Coach Ricky Seale. As a junior,
he earned all-county and all-city honors. A three year letter
winner on the gridiron, he also competed on the basketball team.
Plans to enroll in accounting.
Todd Ward
6-2, 250
Spartanburg High, Spartanburg, SC
An all-state center, he joins his high school linemante (Eric
Taylor) as a Pack recruit. Listed on the all-state teams by the
Greenville News, Columbia State, and Associated Press. Played
in the Shrine Bowl. His team, coached by former Wolfpack Allen
Sitterie finished the regular season as the top ranked squad in
South Carolina. As a junior, he received all-copnference and
all-area accolades. Played guard that fall, helping his team to the
state championship game. Also competed on the track and golf
teams. A strong student who will major in business.
Robert Yelverton
6-4, 270
Goldsboro High, Goldsboro, NC
A two-time Academic All-American, this offensive lineman was
also listed on USA Today's honorable mention All-America chart.
An Associated Press all-state selection, he also earned All-East
4-A honors from The News & Observer. A three year starter, he
played both ways in his final two seasons. Posted 77 tackles as a
senior after delivering 85 stops as a junior. Wrestled as a junior,
and played on the basketball squad as a sophomore. President of
the school's National Art Honor Society.
