One of the top wideouts in South Carolina for the past two
years. Billed as a sure-handed, hard-nosed received.
Ranked as the 20th best prospect in South Carolina by
SuperPrep. Rated as one of the Top 25 players in South
Carolina by The Charlotte Observer. Listed as one of the top
four receivers in the ACC Region by BlueChip Illustrated. In
three-year varisty career at Westside, had 167 receptions for
1947 yards and 19 TDs. Caught 57 passesfor 759 yards and 8
TDs as a senior. First-team all-state by the Greenville
News and The State. Named all-region 4-A and all-area for
three years. Also played defensive end as a senior, making
78 tackles (30 unassisted), 5 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, and
3 INTs. Helped team to a 8-4 record and win the region title.
Played for South Carolina in the Shrine Bowl and caught two
passes for 60 yards, including a 35-yard TD in the second
quarter. Player four years of varisty baseball. Plans to major
in criminal justice.

An outstanding athlete who starred n football, basketball, and
track at West Montgomery High. Caught 27 passes for 462
yards and 8 TDs as a senior for an 8-3 team. Also led the
squad with 77 unassisted tackles, 55 assisted tackles, and 9
sacks from his defensive end position. Named the Central Tar
Heel 2-A Conference Lineman of the Year. A two-time
first-team all-conference pick. Was the runner-up in the
1992 state 1-A / 2-A track meet in the triple jump with a
leap of 44-8. Was also sixth in the long jump with a distance
of 21-2 3/4. Owns a personal best high jump of 6-4. On the
hardwood averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds, earning
all-conference honors. Brother, Lamont, is a defensive back
at Elizabeth City State University. Intended major is
education.
Montez Barrett

A large linebacker in high school, Barrett, one of the highest
rated players in the state, is expected to settle in one the
defensive line at State. Registered 143 tackles, 3 sacks, 2
INTs and 15 TFLs as a senior at Rose High. Also played
fullback in short-yardage situations scoring 3 TDs. Helped
Rose post a 12-1 record and advance to the third round of the
state playoffs. Selected honorable mention all-state by
Associated Press. Named all-conference, all-county, and the
area Defensive Player of the Year. As a junior was
all-conference and all-area selection, and was credited with
110 tackles and 8 sacks, ans11 TFLs. Played for North
Carolina in the Shrine Bowl. Following the season was
ranked as the 10th best prospect in North Carolina by
SuperPrep. Rated as one of the Top 15 players in the state by
the Raleigh News & Observer. Considered a solid baseball
prospect, a sport he anticpates playing at State. An
all-conference first baseman for Rose with hitting power.

Became one of the state's top prospects during an
outstanding senior season, which he capped with a very
imprssive week at the Shrine Bowl. Was North Carolina's
defensive MVP of the Shrine Bowl after making 11 tackles
against South Carolina. As a senior at Jacksonville High was
credited with 57 tackles and 5 sacks on a 8-4 team. Prep
team advanced to the second round of the state playoffs.
Named all-conference and all-area as both a tight end and
defensive tackle. As a tight end, caught 12 passes for 185
yards. Also all-conference and all-area as a junior. Ranked
as the 21st best prospect in North Carolina by SuperPrep
after the season, despite not being rated in the pre-season.
One of the state's Top 25 prospects according to The
Charlotte Observer. Listed as one of the Top 30 players in
the state by the News & Observer. Intends to major in
criminal justice.
Rod Brown

Lithonia High, Lithonia, GA
An outstanding, hard-hitting athlete with good size. Played
linebacker and running back at Lithonia High, where he was
teammate of fellow State signee Delaine Manley. Named
first-team all-state by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Was credited with 104 tackles, including a team-high 69 solo
stops, 8 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, and 1 INT. Rushed for
485 yards and 12 TDs on 88 carries, averaging 5.5 yards per
carry. Also caught 14 passes for 136 yards and 2 TDs.
Selected the DeKalb County Two-Way Player of the Year.
Chosen to play in the annual Georgia North-South All-Star
Game. As a junior, ran for 800 yards and 11 TDs and had 98
tackles and 7 sacks on defense. Listed as one of the Top 100
prospects in the Southeast Region by Prep Football Report.
Picked NC State over Georgia, Clemson, Georgia Tech, and
Arkansas.
Kit Carpenter

Dalton High, Dalton, GA
Without receiving much national acclaim, Carpenter put
together incredible numbers for the second straight year and
was named Georgia 3-A Defensive Player of the Year for
1992 by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. As a senior
amassed 191 tackles, 6 sacks, 15 TFLs, 5 INTs, 7 fumbles
caused, and 4 fumbles recovered. Team went 11-2 and
reached the state quarterfinals. Named the Georgia Player of
the Year by the Chattanooga Free-Press. Selected
Tri-State Player of the Year by the Chattanooga Times for
the region covering Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia.
Selected all-North Georgia, all-area and all-state. Started
all 36 games (29-5-2) of his three year varsity career and
averaged 14.4 tackles per game (510 career tackles). As a
junior led the Tri-State area in tackles with 195 and was
named all-state. Was an early commitment to the Wolfpack
after being recruited by most ACC and SEC schools. Ranked
as one of the top four linebackers in Georgia by the Atlanta
Journal Constitution. Listed as the 39th best prospect in the
Southeast by SuperPrep after the season. Ranked as one of
the Top 30 linebackers in the SEC by BlueChip Illustrated.
Selected to play in the Georgia-Florida All-Star Game.

Mark Castaldi

Harrison High, Harrison, NY
A high school quarterback, Castaldi will be be converted to
tight end at State. Billed as a good athlete with excellent
growth potential. Led Harrison High to a 4-1 record after
recovering from a sever case of mononucleosis, which caused
him to miss pre-season practice and the first three games of
the season, and lose 25 pounds. Team was 1-1-1 without
Castaldi. Once in linup, completed 63 of 105 passes for 743
yards and 14 TDs. Was a two-time All-Section I
quarterback. As a junior, led Harrison to a 7-1 mark and the
Section 1 championship. Listed as one of the Top 40 players
in the New York State by Prep Football Report. An
all-Section basketball player, averaging 20.2 points and 10.1
rebounds as a senior. Brother, Chris, is a manager for the
UCLA football team. His uncle, John Lium, was a 6-5,
200-pound lineman at Notre Dame in the mid-60's. Intends
to major in business.

A local product who was considered one of the top prep
prospects in North Carolina. After a stellar linebacking
season at Milbrook High, Collins was selected honorable
mention all-America by USA Today. Credited with 54 solo
stops, 77 assists, 12 sacks, and 11 knocked down passes at
the line for a 10-2 team as a senior. Named honorable
mention all-state by the Greensboro News & Record and the
Associated Press. Selected first-team All-Cap-Five
Conference and chosen for the News & Observer
Old-Reliable all-area squad. Ranked as the second best
defensive line prospect in the Atlantic Coast Region by Blue
Chip Illustrated. Listed as the 14th best prospect in the state
by SuperPrep. Listed as the 77th best prospect in the state
by Prep Football Report. Rated as the 18th best prospect in
the State by the News & Observer. As a junior picked up
all-conference honors after producing 101 tackles, 9 sacks,
and 16 TFLs. Also played baseball and basketball at
Milbrook. Averaged 7 points and 7 rebounds for a 21-5 team
with high games of 16 points and 11 rebounds during the
senior season. Brother, Mark, graduated from NC State in
1987. An outstanding student planning to major in
engineering.

Emerged as one of the region's top defensive backs in his
senior season at Anson County High. Moved to Wadesboro
from Pepperell High in Lindale (GA) before his senior
season. Credited with 64 tackles and 6 INTs as a free safety
on a 10-3 team. Earned all-conference and honorable
mention all-state honors. Ranked as the 10th best safety in
the country by Prep Football Report. Ranked as the 4th best
prospect in the state by SuperPrep. Named to SuperPrep's
all-America team, and ranked as the 9th best defensive back
in the nation. Listed as one of the Top 25 players in the state
by The Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer.
Named second-team Schutt all-America as selected by
Scholastic Coach magazine. As a junior at Pepperell, was
all-conference, all-area, and all-state after posting 94
tackles, and intercepting 7 passes for the 2-A school. Also
caught 10 passes for 200 yards and 2 TDs as a part-time
receiver. An all-conference basketball player at Anson,
averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds. Received 3 scholarship
offers for basketball. Ran hurdles and sprints for the track
squad. Has a personal best time of 10.9 in the 100-meters.
Brother Fred is an assistant coach and administrator at
Anson County. Chose NC State over Florida, Tennessee,
Georgia, and Alabama.

New Hanover High, Wilmington, NC
A former Wilmington New Hanover star who prepped this
past year at Hargrave. Played cornerback and recorder 27
solo tackles, 4 assists, and 3 INTs. Hargrave sent 13 players
to Division I programs this year. Gained almost 20 pounds of
muscle while at Hargrave. As a senior OLD at New Hanover,
led team in tackles averaging 11 per game. Earned all-state
and all-conference honor and played in the North Carolina
East-West All-Star Game. One of the Top 100 players in
the state according to G&W Recruiting as a senior in high
school. As a juniorm averaged 7 tackles per game, and was
named first-team all-conference. Also excelled in track and
basketball at New Hanover. Possesses a 36-inch bertical
jump. Hails from the same high school as fellow incoming
recruit Trot Nixon and current team member Terrence Boykin,
a redshirt freshman offensive lineman.
Lonnie Gilbert
Linebacker / Offensive Line

American Senior High, Hialeah, FL
A highly recruited prospect out of talent-rich Florida. Played
offensive line for American Senior High, but Wolfpack
coaches, however, believe that his quickness and athletic
ability make him well suited for outside linebacker. Was
named second-team all-state 5-A. Named all-city by the
Miami Herald and all-conference. Five players from
American Senior signed with Division I football programs,
including one to Miami and one to Rutgers. Team had a 4-3
record in a season shortened by Hurricane Andrew. As a
junior, helped team to a 6-4 mark, and was named
second-team all-city. Ranked as the 17th best prospect in
Dade County by the Miami herald. Rated as the 6th best
offensive lineman in the state by the Tallahassee Democrat.
Offered scholarships by Florida State, Rutgers, and West
Virginia. Threw the weights for the track team. Mom is a
teacher, and Dad is a school principal. Father played football
for Florida A&M.
Kenny Harris

Northern Durham High, Durham, NC
In just two years of organized football, developed into one of
the state's prized prospects. Led Northern Durham to the
state title game, where the Knights lost 28-21. Credited with
70 tackles, while picking off four passes, breaking up 8 more,
and blitzing for 3 sacks. Selected all-Metro and
all-conference. Reminds State coaches of former all-ACC
player Mike Reid. As a junior in hig first year of football,
mixed 6 games due to blood clots in both legs. Despite
limited experience was listed as the 13th best prospect in the
state by SuperPrep in its post-season edition. Ranked
among the state's Top 20 players by the News & Observer
and the Durham Herald. Joins Carl Reeves, Dewayne
Washington, and Chuck Browning as former Northern
Durham stars on the Wolfpack roster. Excelled in basketball
at Northern for 3 years, averaging 18 points, 8 rebounds, and
3 assists in an all-conference senior season. Brother, David,
is an engineering student at NC State. Intends to major in
engineering.
Matt Johnson

The brother of Wolfpack rising sophomore offensive lineman
Robby Johnson. Considered a sleeper in this year's recruiting
class. Boasts good size and athletic ability, he will begin his
collegiate career as a tight end. Named all-Northwestern
4-A Conference as a senior tight end at Hickory High. Made
10 cathces for 120 yards and 1 TD in an offense where he was
used mostly as a blocker. An honorable mention
all-conference selection as a junior after catching 7 passes
for 80 yards. Stepbroth, Trip Cody, plays football at
Lenior-Rhyne College. Attended the receivers camp at NC
State for two years. Member of the Hickory High Student
Council. Plans to major in pre-med.
Carlos King
Running Back

Hargrave Military Academy, Chatham, VA
Starmount High, Booneville, NC
Signed with State in February, 1992, but went to Hargrave
Military Academy to improve academically. First shot will
come at tailback, but has the ability and size to play fullback
or on the defensive side of the ball. One of the top running
backs in the state coming out of Starmount High a year ago.
He amassed more than 3000 yards rushing, averaged more
than 10 yards per carry, and score 40 TDs in his last two
varsity seasons there. Ran for 1620 yards and 22 TDs on 147
carries as a senior, earning honorable mention all-state
recognition. During his four-year prep career, he rushed for
more over 4500 yards. As a freshman was promoted to the
varsity for the team's final four games, where on his first
carry he rushed for a 35-yard TD. Listed as the second-best
running back in the state by Prep Football Report. Ranked as
the 7th best prospect in the Mid-Atlantic Region by
SuperPrep after the 1992 season. Listed in recruiting analyst
Max Emfinger's Atlantic Coast Super 66. Lined up at free
safety for the 1991 Shrine Bowl game. At Hargrave carried
the ball 69 times for 340 yards and 3 TDs as part of a
five-tailback rotation. As a forward on the Starmount
basketball team, he was the Northwest 2-A Conference
Player of the Year. Averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds. Set
school career records for points (1485) and rebounds (819).
Was a three-time all-Northwest Conference selection.
Competed in the 100-meters, 200-meters, and long jump for
the track squad.
Delaine Manley

Lithonia High, Lithonia, GA
One of the most highly recruited players to join the Wolfpack
this year. He spurned offers from Georgia, Clemson, and
Florida. Played defensive line as a senior at Lithonia, but his
size, speed, and quickness may land him a job at linebacker
at State. Named an honorable mention all-America by USA
Today. Recorded 114 tackles and 10 sacks for a 9-4 team
that advanced to the state quarterfinals. Also saw action at
tight end, catching 8 passes for 163 yards and 4 TDs. Named
all-conference, all-DeKalb County, and honorable mention
all-state by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. A teammate at
Lithonia of Rod Brown, a fellow incoming recruit. Selected to
play in the prestigious Florida-Georgia All-Star Game.
Ranked among the Top 10 defensive linemen in Georgia by
the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Rated as the 42nd best
prospect in the Dixie Region by SuperPrep after the season.
Rated as the 17th best outside linebacker in the country by
Prep Football Report following the 1992 season, despite not
being ranked before the year. Plans to major in
communications.

Attended Hargraver Military Academy on his own this past
season after a standout prep career at Kannapolis A.L.
Brown High. At Hargrave recorded 68 tackles, 4 sacks, 8
hurries, and 3 TFL in 1992. Officially the fastest player at
Hargrave after running a 4.38 40-yards. A standout
linebacker at A.L. Brown, leading the team in tackles as a
senior with an average of 9 per game. Named first-team
all-county, all-conference, and honorable mention all-state.
Rated as the 3rd best linerbacker in the state after the
season by Prep Football Report. As a junior started at
linebacker and tailback, and averaged 8 tackles per game, and
rushed for over 400 yards. Named first-team all-county.
Superb athlete with a 36-inch vertical jump and a personal
best time of 10.4 in the 100-meters. Was the 1992 state 3-A
200-meters champion, winning the title with a time of 22.23
and finished fourth in the 100-meters. May run some sprint
events for NC State. Plans to major in sports management.

One of the most highly regarded prep defensive players in
North Carolina this past year. An honorable mention
all-state selection by the Greensboro News & Record and
Associated Press. Averaged 12 tackles per game and
recorded 10 sacks as a senior at Thomasville High. Made 180
total tackles on a 14-1 Thomasville team. All-conference
and all-conunty. Played defensive line for the North Carolina
squad in the Shrine Bowl and made 5 tackles. Listed as the
8th best prospect in the state by SuperPrep in the
postseason. Ranked as the 60th best prospect in the
Mid-Atlantic Region by Prep Football Report. Listed as one
of the Top 25 players in the state by the Charlotte Observer.
Rated as the 13th best player in the state by the News &
Observer. Plans to take a pre-med curriculum. Involves
himself heavily in working with youth and is part of a group
(called Sunday Brunch) that is organizing a foundation to help
teenagers with drug and alcohol problems. An honor roll
student at Thomasville. Worked as a dietery assistant at a
rest home.
Trot Nixon

New Hanover High, Wilmington, NC
Perhaps the state's top prep athlete, Nixon was a two-sport
phenom at New Hanover High, the alma mater of Roman
Gabriel and Sonny Jurgensen. Rated as one of the top
quarterbacks in the nation, he was also rated as one of Top 5
high school baseball players in the nation. Finished his
four-year career with 5662 yards passing and 67 TDs. As a
senior completed 86 of 164 passes for 1727 yards, leading
New Hanover to an 11-1 record and a berth in the Eastern
Regional finals for the state 4-A playoffs. Threw 19 TD
passes with only 8 INTs. Rushed for 596 yards on 51 carries,
scoring 11 times. Selected the Gatorade Circle of Champions
North Carolina Player of the Year. Named all-conference and
honorable mention all-state by the Associated Press.
Ranked as the 10th best quarterback in the nation by
SuperPrep, and selected to the magazine's all-America
team. Also ranked as the second-best prospect in the
Mid-Atlantic Region by the magazine. Listed among the
nations top six quarterbacks and Top 50 overall by Atlanta
Journal Constitution. Ranked as the state's top prospect by
the News & Observer. As a junior, completed 71 of 124
passes for 2100 yards and 24 TDs, and gained 515 yards on
101 rushes with 14 TDs. Led New Hanover to a 13-1 record
and into the state finals. A lefhanded pitcher and
centerfielder, he was rated as the fourth best high school
baseball prospect in the country by Baseball America.
Selected to play for the United States Junior Olympic
Baseball Team. Considered a probable first-round pick in the
Major League Draft. Tied a state record in 1993 by hitting a
home run in 6 consecutive games. Selected the Pack over
Alabama, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Tennessee, and
Auburn. Brother, Bud, played defensive back and baseball at
Duke in the early 80's. Older sister, Dee, runs track at East
Carolina.

An outstanding defensive line prospect, Patterson signed
with NC State last year, but spent the season at Hargrave
Military Academy, where he added 20 pounds to his frame
and 70 pounds to his bench press. Played mostly offensive
guard at Hargrave. Saw limited action on the defensive line in
3 games. A standout on the offensive and defensive lines at
Atlantic City High. Named all-state at defensive line, and
was all-conference, all-area, all-South Jersey, and
all-group. Recorded 30 solo tackles, 50 assists, and 5 sacks.
Rated as one of the top four defensive line prospects in New
Jersey coming out of high school by Prep Football Report.
Listed as the 13th best prospect in the Northeast Region by
SuperPrep. Played in the 1992 New Jersey North-South
All-Star Game in the Meadowlands. As a junior was named
all-conference, all-area, and all-group. Narrowed college
choices down to Rutgers, Boston College, Pittsburgh,
Cincinatti, and West Virginia. Served as vice-president of
the senior class at Atlantic City High. Plans to major in
criminal justice.

A massive defensive lineman who is said to be one of the
most imposing physical specimens to come to NC State in
recent years. A high school all-America by Max Emfinger.
Played offensive guard and defensive tackle for 9-3 Mayo
High. Was credited with 63 tackles, 12 sacks, 8 hurries, and 4
fumble recoveries. Played offensive line in the South Carolina
North-South All-Star Game. Played all-Low Country,
all-area, all-conference, and all-state. Started every game
at mayo for 3 consecutive seasons. Attended football camps
at NC State and Penn State following his junior season. A
three-time all-conference selection. Listed as the 8th best
prospect in the state by SuperPrep after the season. Listed
as the 28th best prospect in the Mid Atlantic Region by Prep
Football Report. Chose NC State over Penn State, South
Carolina, North Carolina. An avid collector of baseball and
football cards.

A versatile athlete who figures into the defensive back
picture. Wyche is a product of Camden High, the alma mater
of George Hegamin, Mike Harrison, and Reggie Lawrence.
Roraled 1150 all-purpose yards as a tailback / wide receiver /
kick returner as a senior. Carried the bacll 120 times for 815
yards and 5 TDs, and caught 20 passes for 188 yards. Also
played defensive back, and had 25 solo tackles, 12 assists,
and 3 INTs. Chosen by USA Today as an honorable mention
all-America. Named all-Group III and all-South Jersey by
the Philadelphia Inquirer and was all-conference. As a junior
caught 40 passes for 600 yards and 3 TDs. On defense made
75 tackles and 6 INTs. Ranked as one of the top four
defensive backs in New Jersey by BlueChip Illustrated.
Played varsity baseball for four years. Plans to major in
business. Last name is pronounced WHY-CHEE. Helps
coach Little League baseball and Pop Warner football in his
hometown of Camden.
