Geoff Bender
6-3, 200
North Hills High, Pittsburgh, PA
A highly touted drop quarterback with outstanding
size. An honorable mention All-American on the
USA Today list. He was one of the 19 All-American
quarterbacks selected by Tom Lemming. Earned
first-team all-state accolades as a senior after
leading North Hills High to the USA Today national
title in 1989. As a senior under Coach Jack McCurry
he passed for 1896 yards while hitting on 110 of 229
attempts. Also threw for 19 TDs. Ran for 440 yards
and 6 TDs on 102 attempts from the flex wishbone
offense. Saw action in the defensive backfield, with a
pair of touchdowns, and 1 TD return. As a junior he
completed 91 of 190 passes for 1439 yards and 14
TDs. His team went 22-3 over his final two seasons.
Also played baseball and basketball, averaging 8
points and 10 rebounds on the hardwood, and playing
catcher and pitcher on the diamond. His twin brother,
Jason, was a prep receiver who signed with Georgia
Tech. An outstanding student who plans to enroll in
business management. Born on August 14, 1971.

All-American linemand with excellent potential and
size. An all-state honoree on the offensive line, he
was also the co-defensive player of the year in the
Peninsula Region. Expected to begin his college
career on the defensive side of the ball. Ranked as
the 6th best prospect in Virginia by the Roanoke
Times & World News. Earned team MVP honors as
a senior. Did not play prep football until his
sophomore year, but became a two-way starter for
Coach Bill Dee. In 1989, he recorded 40 tackles with
14.5 sacks, 1 INT, and 1 fumble recovery. Timed at
4.85 in the 40-yards, and has a bench press of 285
pounds. Born on April 3, 1972.
Chuck Browning
6-1, 170
Northern Durham High, Durham, NC
A quarterback for the North Carolina squad in the
Shrine Bowl, he earned a series of honors last fall at
Northern Durham High. Led Northern to a 12-1
record and a sport in the state 4-A semi-finals while
receiving all-City, all-area, and all-Eastern North
Carolina accolades. Hit on 78 of 115 attempts for
1156 yards and 12 TDs. Led the junior varsity team
to a 10-1 record as a sophomore. Worked as a
varisty backup quarterback as a junior. Played for his
father, Coach Ken Browning. Two of his prep
teammates, Carl Reeves and Dewayne Washington,
will also join the Pack this fall. Attending NCSU on a
prestigious Caldwell Scholarship. Ranked 5th in a
class of 509. Born on December 26, 1971.
Eric Counts
6-3, 230
Medford-Lenape High, Tom's River, NJ
An outstanding athelete who earned All-America
recognition as a fullback and as a linebacker. Could fill
either position for the Wolfpack. Tabbed as one of the
nations finest by USA Today and Super Prep. An
excellent blocker he was selected for the
all-Burlington County, all-district, all-area,
all-South Jersey, and all-Conference units. Rushed
for 691 yards and 5 TDs on 110 carries in 1989. Was
not stopped behind the line of scrimmage last fall.
Caught 8 passes out of Coach Archie Stalcup's
wishbone alignment. Defensively he posted 103
tackles with 12 sacks and a pair of INTs. Holds the
school record for sacks in a season (12) and career
(28). Timed 4.67 in the 40-yards, and benched over
400 pounds. Born on January 11, 1972.
Gary Downs
6-1, 200
Spencer High, Columbus, GA
A talented running back with both speed and size.
Listed among the top 50 prospects in Georgia by the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Won Spencer High's
Golden Helmet Award as the squad MVP. Last
season, he piled up 683 yards runing on 100 carries
from the wishbone. An outstanding receiver, he
caught 12 passes for 250 yards. Scored 3 offensive
TDs and returned an interception 95 yards for another
scores. As a junior he had 578 yards and 3 TDs and
10 receptions. Comes to Raleigh from the same high
school as current Wolfpacke Ricky Logo. Competed in
the Junior Olympics national track and field meet
placing second in the 110-meters high hurdles. His
father played football at N.C. Central. An outstanding
student who is a member of the National Honor
Society. Born on June 6, 1972.
Chris Dwyer
6-4, 230
Admiral Farragut Prep, Tom's River, NJ
Named the top tight end on the New Jersey
All-State Prep A unit this fall. Made 22 catches for
650 yards, and 3 TDs. Also played defensive end,
recording over 100 tackles with 7 sacks. Punted for an
average of 39 yards per kick, with a long of 76 yards.
Showed his versatility by playing quarterback one
game. Ran for 97 yards on 14 carries in that game for
Coach Bob Tormollan. Went to Admiral Farragut
following a great career at Holy Cross High. As a
senior, he earned all-state honors as a wide receiver.
Missed his junior campaign following a bicycling
injury. His father played at Iowa before an injury
ended his career after one season. Born on January 8,
1971.
Edward Gallon
6-2, 195
Kathleen High, Lakeland, FL
An all-star quarterback in high school, he could play
a number of positions on the collegiate level. Earner
all-area and all-district honors at Kthleen High
while running for 640 yards and 6 TDs from the
wishbone backfield. Connected on 85 of 184 passing
attempts for 625 yards and 6 TDs. Selected for the
third-team all-state unit as a utility player. Received
team MVP honors. Also saw action at defensive
back, intercepting 4 passes. Threw for 600 yards and
7 TDs as a junior while leading Coach Grady
Maddox's squad to the district title. Helped the
basketball squad reach the state championship
contest by averaging 10 points and 5 rebounds per
game. His brother, Eric, was the starting fullback at
Kansas State last fall. Born on January 26, 1972.
Eddie Goines
6-0, 180
Lakeland High, Lakeland, FL
One of the top wide receivers in Florida, he earned
all-state honors and a spot in the Florida
North-South All-Star Game. Named to the Lakeland
Ledger's All-Decade Team. Received a series of
honors, including being listed in Who's Who in
American Sports. As a senior he caught 41 passes for
741 yards and 12 TDs. A big-play man, he scored 84
points with one punt return, and another score on a
reverse. The team MVP for Coach Bill Castle. In
1988 he caught 13 passes for 259 yards, and 3 TDs.
Also tallied on 2 punt returns, 2 reverses, and 1
fumble recovery. An all-area selection following the
'88 campaign. Played baseball as a sophomore and
junior, hitting over .300 each year. Born on August 16,
1972.
Adrian Hill
6-2, 180
A.C. Reynolds High, Asheville, NC
An outstanding wideout prospect with excellent
speed. Continues the Pack's strong link to the
powerful A.C. Reynolds program. Ranked among the
top 25 seniors in North Carolina by the Charlotte
Observer. He was tabbed as among the nations
finest receivers by the G&W Recruiting Report.
Although he played for a run-oriented offense, he
compiled 28 catches for 787 yards and 9 TDs as a
senior under Coach Scott Conner. Team finished 14-1
in 1989, losing in the state 4-A title contest. Timed
at 4.3 in the 40-yards, and was the state's number
one ranked prep runner in the 100-meter
intermediate hurdles. Plans to run track for the
Wolfpack. As a junior he saw actions at defensive
back, recording 3 INTs as Reynolds rolled to a 12-1
record. Born on October 14, 1972.
Robert Hinton
6-2, 185
Fork Union Military Academy, VA
Garner High, Garner, NC
A local product who should become a big contributor
at wide receiver for the Wolfpack. Played his high
school ball at Garner before enrolling at Fork Union.
Paced FUMA with 82 receptions and 400 yards with
a team high 6 TDs for Coach John Shuman. Lettered 3
years at Garner, helping the Trojans to 36 victories
and the 1987 state 4-A title. Earner all-East and
all-Triangle recognition as a senior under Coach Hal
Stewart. Also tabbed as a the Wake County Player of
the Year by the News & Observer. Player in the
1988 Shrine Bowl, and was member of the
all-conference unit as a junior. A standout on the
basketbal court, where he earned 3 letters, and
scored over 10 points per game for 3 seasons.
Competed on the track squad, running middle
distance and working the junping events.
Chris Ingle
6-4, 225
Rockdale County High, Conyers, GA
An excellent linebacker prospect, he could also work
as a down lineman on the defensive front. Earned
team MVP honors after posting 89 tackles with 39
solo stops in 1989. Also had 9 fumble recoveries, 7
caused fumbles, and 5 sacks for Coach Jeff Beggs.
His prep coach played for Dick Sheridan at Furman.
As a sophomore, he measured 6-0, 185-pounds. His
father was a tight end at Georgia, and he played his
final collegiate game against NC State in the 1967
Liberty Bowl.
David Inman
6-4, 260
Terry Sanford High, Fayetteville, NC
Winner of the Pat Best Memorial Trophy, which is
given annually by the North Carolina High School
Athletic Association to the state's top lineman.
Earned offensive line honorable mention All-America
honors from The Sporting News. Listed on the
Greensboro News & Record all-state honorable
mention chart. The team MVP for Coach John
Daskell. Won the state 4-A heavyweight wrestling
title with a perfect 34-0 record last winter. Also
pitched for the baseball team with a 6-1 record and a
2.00 ERA. An all-conference selection on the
diamond as a junior. His brother, Wayne, was an
All-American lineman at East Carolina. Born on
October 27, 1971.
David Janik
6-2, 225
Boardman High, Youngstown, OH
A versatile athlete who could play as a linebacker or
as a fullback. He missed the majority of his senior
season after tearing ligaments in his left ankle.
Through 5 games, he has rushed for 173 yards with 3
TDs on 38 carries. Utilized mainly as a blocking back
as a junior, he gained 610 yards and scored 4 TDs on
70 carries. Boardman's tailback that year, Jason
Marruci, signed with Miami. Cleveland Brown
quarterback Bernie Kosat, and NCSU Cross Country
runner Laurie Gomez came out of Boardman. Has
been successfull in both weightlifting and body
building competitions. Born on November 19, 1971.
Mike Johnson

Person County High, Roxboro, NC
A strong young defensive back who is coming off an
outstanding Shrine Bowl performance. An honorable
mention all-state selection by the Greensboro News
& Record, he posted 6 solo tackles, and a pair of
assists for the North Carolina Shrine Bowl squad.
Tabbed for the Durham Morning Herald's all-area
unit. A three-year starter for Coach John Lacy
Harris, he was an all-conference honoree as a senior.
Delivered 77 tackles in 1989 with a team high 6 INTs.
Played on defense, offense, and on all special teams.
Also ran track, and played basketball as a sophomore
and junior. Born on June 18, 1972.
Shawn Johnson
6-2, 270
Murphy High, Murphy, NC
The Smokey Mountain Conference Lineman of the
Year, he was a two-time all-conference honoree on
both the offensive and defensive fronts. Should begin
his collegiate career on the offensive side of the ball,
probably at center. Murphy High's MVP last fall for
Coach David Gentry. He recorded 100 tackles with 8
sacks as a senior. Plays catcher on the baseball
team, hitting .444 at the midway point of the season.
Also throws the shot and the discuss for the track
squad. Bench presses 430 pounds, and was clocked
4.85 in the 40-yards.
Robert Lee
6-5, 228
Clinton High, Clinton, SC
One of the top prep performers in South Carolina, he
could fit into the Wolfpack plans at outside linebacker
or tight end. Earned all-state honors from The State
and the Spartanburg Herald, and was among the top
25 players in South Carolina as listed in The
Charlotte Observer. Played tight end in the Shrine
Bowl, catching 3 passes for the victorious South
Carolina team. Tabbed for the all-Lawrence County,
and all-Broad River Region units. Posted 14
receptions for 285 yards and 6 TDs in a run oriented
offensive scheme last fall. Also played defensive end,
delivering 40 tackles and 8 sacks. A two-year starter
for Coach Keith Richardson, he had 13 catches for 275
yards and 8 TDs as a junior. Twice named to the
all-conference team on the hardwood, where he
averaged 15 points and 8 rebounds as a senior. A
member of the National Honor Society, he was the
student body president as a senior. Born on January
9, 1972.
Ed Miller
6-6, 265
Lakewood High, Lakewood, OH
A highly-regarded offensive tackle prospect with
exceptional size. An honorable mention All-America
selection by the Blue Chip Report. Chosen to play in
the Ohio East-West All-Star Game. Earned
all-Northeast Ohio region from the Cleveland
Plain-Dealer. Tabbed for the all-Lake Erie League
following his junior and senior seasons. Also selected
as the most valuable offensive lineman for Coach
Brian Burke in his final two seasons. Coach Burke
was an assistant at NC State from 1972 to 1975.
Carl Reeves
6-4, 215
Northern Durham High, Durham, NC
Received All-America notica at defensive end in high
school, he is expected to line up at outside linebacker
this fall. Named to The Sporting News'
All-American honorable mention unit. Also listed on
the Associated Press' all-state squad and the News
& Observer's all-East second team. Helped
Northern Durham to a 12-1 recrod and won the most
dedicated player award. Had 17 sacks and 3 fumble
recoveries last fall. Led team in quarterback sacks
the last 2 seasons. Received all-city, all-metro, and
all-Triangle honors in each of the past two seasons.
Also averaged 10 points and 8 rebounds per game for
the hoop squad. Has gained 18 pounds since the end
of the 1989 football season. Born on December 17,
1971.
William Strong
6-0, 182
Lewisville High, Lewisville, SC
A fine all-around athlete, he is expected to start his
collegiate career at cornerback, but he could play
tailback, or wide receiver. Earned all-state honors
from The Stae. Also received all-area, all-Chester
County, all-conference, and all-region accolades.
Played in the North-South All-Star Game, carrying
the ball 5 times for 49 yards. As a senior he raced for
977 yards on 138 carries, with 9 TDs. Posted 7 INTs,
including one he returned 40 yards for a TD. Also
returned 2 punts for TDs. The team's most valuable
defensive back as a senior, he won the offensive
backfield award as a junior. In 1988 he rushed for 500
yards, and 8 TDs, and also registered 8 INTs. In his 3
varisty seasons under Coach Bennie McMurray,
Lewisville won 36 games and reached the three state
title games, with one state championship. Also
excels as a sprinter on the track. Born on November
3, 1971.
Dewayne Washington

Northern Durham High, Durham, NC
One of the finest prep defensive backs in America
last fall, he was among the 13 players chosen at that
position in The Sporting News Best of the Blue
Chips. Named to the Super-Prep All-America Team,
he was an honorable mention All-America by USA
Today. Tabbed as one of the top 5 prep players in the
state by the Orlando Sentinel, he was on the
Charlotte Observer's Top 25. Selected for the
Associated Press and Greensboro News & Record
all-state teams. Played for North Carolina in the
Shrine Bowl, making 5 tackles, and intercepting 2
passes. During his prep career he made 14 INTs, and
blocked 10 kicks. As a senior, he was the squad's
second leading tackler with 7 INTs and 4 blocked
punts. Team finished 12-1 after losing in the state
4-A semi-finals under Coach Ken Browning. A
member of the Northern track squad, he was timed at
4.5 in the 40-yards. Born on December 27, 1972, he
played on the varsity squad as a 14-year-old
sophomore.
Scott Woods

Newton-Conover High, Conover, NC
An honorable mention All-America selection by The
Sporting News, he possesses excellent size and
potential. An all-conference and all-district
performer, he was named one of the Top 50 prospects
in North Carolina by the News & Observer. Selected
to play in the East-West All-Star Game. Teamed
with his twin brother Heath on the offensive line.
Heath has signed with UNC-CH. Newton-Conover
went 11-1 last fall under coach Don Patrick. A
three-year starter his teams posted a 34-4 record
over that span. Also throws the shot, and the discus
for the track squad. Born on April 9, 1972.
