The 2013 NBA Finals kicked off with a fantastic Game 1 between the San
Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat. It was everything the NBA could have
asked for from an opening game to a series as the Spurs kept Miami
close throughout and ultimately registered a dramatic come-from-behind
92-88 victory on the road.

In spite of their success, the Spurs have never materialized into a
national ratings draw. The "boring" label may not be fair to this
year's team, but it's clear the nation has never embraced the Spurs.
Since 1982 San Antonio has been involved in the three lowest rated
Finals:

2007 Spurs vs Cavaliers - 6.2
2003 Spurs vs Nets - 6.5
2005 Spurs vs Pistons - 8.2

To basketball fans, it doesn't make sense, but it's the harsh
reality. The Spurs are a modern day dynasty that has lived in
anonymity for over a decade. What would the star power of the Miami
Heat deliver against this year's Spurs team? The game delivered a
strong rating for ABC/ESPN and the NBA - a 10.6 overnight. ESPN is
promoting the 10.6 overnight rating as the third highest since 2004.
However, not mentioned in the spin is the fact that the rating is
actually down from last year's Thunder-Heat Game 1. That game
delivered an 11.8 overnight, which was the highest ever for an opening
Finals game on ABC. This year's number is on par with 2011's
Mavericks/Heat Game 1 that registered a 10.7 overnight.

It's a solid start ratings wise for ABC/ESPN and the NBA, but not
quite spectacular given the starpower of LeBron James and the fact
that the Spurs are a 4 time NBA champion. The good news for ESPN is
the high quality, entertaining, competitive nature of Game 1. If this
series goes 6 or 7 games, the ratings should only go up from here.

Replacing the star-fueled Thunder with the low-key Spurs resulted in a
double-digit drop for Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

Game 1 of the Spurs/Heat NBA Finals drew a 10.6 overnight rating on
ABC Thursday night, down 10% from Heat/Thunder Game 1 last year
(11.8), and down a tick from Mavericks/Heat Game 1 in 2011 (10.7).

The 10.6 overnight is the lowest for Game 1 of the NBA Finals since
Celtics/Lakers Game 1 in 2010 (10.4). Overall, the 10.6 ranks as the
fourth-highest for an NBA Finals Game 1 on ABC since the network
resumed airing games in 2002 (11 telecasts).

The 10.6 also ranks as the highest for an NBA Finals opener involving
the Spurs since Game 1 of Knicks/Spurs in 1999 (11.7).

The last three NBA Finals involving the Spurs started with overnights
of 7.9 (Cavaliers/Spurs in 2007), 8.8 (Pistons/Spurs in 2005) and 8.1
(Nets/Spurs in 2003).

Locally, Game 1 drew a 34.0 rating in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale market,
up 12% from Game 1 last year (30.5), and up 7% from Game 1 in 2011
(31.9). The 34.0 rating is the highest ever for an NBA Finals Game 1
in the market (four telecasts).

In San Antonio, however, the game drew a 35.3 — down 19% from Game 1
of Cavaliers/Spurs in 2007 (43.7), and down 18% from Game 1 of Pistons/
Spurs in 2005 (42.9).

Game 1 of the NBA Finals fell below previous series to involve LeBron
James and the Heat, but finished well ahead of recent series to
involve the Spurs.

Game 1 of the Spurs/Heat NBA Finals drew an 8.8 final rating and 14.2
million viewers on ABC Thursday night, down 11% in ratings and 12% in
viewership from Heat/Thunder Game 1 last year (9.9, 16.2M), and down
2% and 6%, respectively, from Mavericks/Heat Game 1 in 2011 (9.0,
15.2M).

Spurs/Heat Game 1 ranks as the least-viewed NBA Finals telecast since
Celtics/Lakers Game 1 in 2010 (8.6, 14.1M), ending a 17-game streak
where each telecast earned at least 15 million viewers.

Game 1 also ranks as the least-viewed NBA Finals telecast to involve
the Heat since Mavericks/Heat Game 4 in 2006 (7.8, 11.6M).

With that said, Spurs/Heat Game 1 also ranks as the highest rated and
most-viewed NBA Finals game to involve the Spurs since Game 7 of
Pistons/Spurs in 2005 (11.9, 18.9M). Other than Pistons/Spurs Game 7,
no Spurs game in the NBA Finals has drawn an audience as large since
1999.

When looking at series openers only, Spurs/Heat earned the fourth-
largest audience for Game 1 of the NBA Finals since since ABC began
televising the NBA in 2002-03 — trailing only Heat/Thunder last year,
Pistons/Lakers in 2004 (15.4M), and Mavericks/Heat in 2011.

Among adults 18-49, Game 1 drew a 5.7 rating — down 17% from last year
(6.9), down 12% from 2011 (6.5), and tied as the lowest rating in the
demo for any NBA Finals telecast since Magic/Lakers Game 1 in 2009
(5.4).

The last time the Spurs played LeBron James in the NBA Finals (2007),
Game 1 between the Cavaliers and Spurs drew a record-low 6.3 rating
and 9.2 million viewers, with a 3.7 in the adults 18-49 demo.
