is he the best player to ever play the game?? I think if you look overall
at
a player who has been an ambassador to the sport and a personality on and
off the court that represents the NBA incredibly well, the answer is yes.

Bill Russell is Sports Illustrated's Athlete of the 20th Century. There
aren't enough books about Russell. You can start with "An Opinionated Man"
by Bill Russell. I never saw Russell play, but much of my love of
basketball stems from his work as a color commentator during such things
as the Knicks' first Championship run. To compare Robinson, Jordan etc. to
thier predecessors is absurd. Yes Jordan could dunk from the foul line.
The Doctor wasn't thinking about it when HE did it. Robinson and Duncan
are both very intelligent men. Russell invented defense, and Jerry West
says there are still things nobody does like Russell did.

Here's a book for you. Get the story from John Thompson on what it's like
to sit on the bench behind "an aging, hobbled" Russell while he wins his
last championship as player-coach going 47 minutes a game.
