Timberwolves Sign Pack To 10-Day Contract
Minneapolis/St. Paul, March 18, 2002 - Timberwolves Vice President of Basketball
Operations Kevin McHale today announced the NBA club has signed free agent guard
Robert Pack to a 10-day contract. Per team policy, financial terms of the
agreement were not disclosed.
Additionally, the team placed guard Will Avery on the Injured List with patellar
tendinitis in his right knee. Avery must remain on the Injured List for a
minimum of five games, and is not eligible to be activated until March 29.
The Wolves' active roster currently stands at 12 players. Pack is expected to be
in uniform tomorrow night when the Wolves host the Toronto Raptors at Target
Center (7 p.m. Central).
The 6-2, 190-pound product of the University of Southern California was
originally signed by the Portland Trail Blazers as a free agent in 1991. Pack
has averaged 9.7 points (.427 FG%), 2.1 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game in 482
regular-season contests through 10 NBA seasons with Portland (1991-92), Denver
(1992-93 through 1994-95 and 2000-01), Washington (1995-96), New Jersey (first
half 1996-97) and Dallas (second half of 1996-97 through 1999-2000).
Pack's best statistical season as a professional came in 1995-96, when he
averaged 18.1 points (.428 FG%), 4.3 rebounds and 7.8 assists per game in 31
contests as a member of the Bullets. He averaged 6.5 points (.425 FG%), 1.9
rebounds and 4.0 assists per game in 74 contests played for the Nuggets last
season. Additionally, the New Orleans native has averaged 5.8 points and 2.2
assists in 26 career playoff games with the Blazers (14) and Nuggets (12).
Avery has averaged 2.5 points, 1.3 assists and 9.2 minutes per game in 28
contests with the Wolves in 2001-02. He missed 11 games earlier this season
after being placed on the IL on Jan. 19 with patellar tendinitis in

As an aside...I was wondering aloud in this newsgroup a while back
why the Wolves didn't go out and sign a backup PG as soon as TB
went down. I specifically mentioned Pack and Anthony as options.
Why did the Wolves wait so long to do this? It could have possibly
saved them the embarrassment of this losing streak. Not to mention
that Pack would be familiar with the Wolves offense by now, had
they signed him back a month ago. As it stands now, he's going to
take a few games before he's up to speed...and the Wolves don't
have the luxury of time on their side now.
Grrrrrrr! Why does it always need to be so frustrating to be a Wolves fan?
>You were on the money before Scott. If they were going to pick up Pack, it
>should have been earlier. All Pack will do now is take away needed minutes
>from Avery.
Indeed, since they put Avery on the IR. I'm thinking they should have
put Woods on the IR, leaving Avery as an option if Pack stumbles
early on. I guess that leaves Lopez as our interim backup option. Yipes.
With Woods on the IR, they'd still have Jackson, Smith and Trent
as serviceable center backups. Besides, Woods hasn't shown much
lately anyway.
Oh well, I'll just have to assume that Flip and McHale have their reasons
for doing this.
>Finally, some good news here. Can Pack play in the Playoffs? (Assuming
>we resign him)
Yes. If the Wolves extend his contract, he is eligible for the playoffs.

What timing on that injury. One thing about Will, he always gets injured
and gets healthy at opportune times.
That's a no-confidence vote if I ever heard one.
Well ... bring Pack in. What can it hurt? This team needs something different.

That is assuming Avery gets off the DL again.
Matt
well he has to come playoff time. i don't think pack can play during the
playoffs. is avery really hurt, or was he put on the DL just for pack? if
he's not hurt and pack is not available for the playoffs, this was a stupid
move.
i didn't realize that. in that case, it might have been a good move. i still
would prefer avery though.
I think they needed less of billups and more of avery. and of course, for the
millionth time, more of lopez, less of peeler.
Avery isn't really hurt. He always gets "injured" whenever the Wolves need
a roster spot. And Pack is playoff eligible, to my understanding.
