Ron Artest will be suspended by the NBA for 30 games according to a report
on Fox Sports Radio. Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson of the Pacers will
also be out of action for 20 games each while Pistons star Ben Wallace will
miss five games for their roles in the fight in Detroit Friday night.

Fred McLeod, pbp voice of the Pistons on FSN Detroit, reported on the
suspensions during a live radio interview on GameTime react with Ben Maller
and Chris Landry on Fox Sports Radio Saturday night.

It's the NBA.. if they can stay at least within 5 games of .500, they'll
get to play in the post-season.

Artest is getting off lightly. The others, I'm not sure.

I also think Detroit is getting off lightly if there's no punishment
for the inadequate security.

What kind of message will it send for a drunken mob to be rewarded by
destroying their main competition? I guess whoever has the worst drunken mob
in their building will win the championship! Every guilty fan who can be
identified should be prosecuted.

Well, I agree with you in part -- which is why I wrote that Detroit is
getting off lightly unless there's some repurcussion. (I've previously
suggested they play a number of home games in front of an empty stadium).

However, the fact that Detroit benefits (albiet indirectly) from the
Indiana suspensions isn't an argument against the suspensions. It's an
argument for additional punishments against Detroit -- something that
hasn't been announced one way or the other.

Maybe even play on a neutral court?

I don't dispute the suspensions, but try to put yourself in the shoes of the
Pacers (not Artest). What would you do in that situation? There's no good
answer, I know. Should the players contol themselves but not the fans? Did
you get a good look at what the fans were doing? It was a mob scene, and I
suspect quite drunk. I think the mob was nearly to the point of extreme
violence.

i'm not sure that irony is the right word, but the *outcome* of this
situation is that detroit's #1 rival in the eastern conference has just had
its season all but shoved down the crapper.

way to go detroit fans! talk about helping out your team!

this brings home court advantage to a whole new level...

NBA suspends Artest for rest of season; eight players get shorter bans
-
Sunday, November 21, 2004

(11-21) 14:59 PST NEW YORK (AP) --

Ron Artest was suspended for the rest of the season Sunday as the NBA came
down hard on three members of the Indiana Pacers for fighting with fans
when a melee broke out at the end of a game against the Detroit Pistons.

Overall, nine players from the teams were banned for 143 games, including
some of the harshest penalties the league ever issued. Artest is the first
player to be suspended for nearly an entire season for a fight during a
game.

Indiana's Stephen Jackson was suspended for 30 games and Jermaine O'Neal
for 25. Detroit's Ben Wallace -- whose shove of Artest after a foul led to
the 5-minute fracas -- drew a six-game ban, while Pacers guard Anthony
Johnson got five games.

Four players were suspended for a game apiece: Indiana's Reggie Miller,
and Detroit's Chauncey Billups, Elden Campbell and Derrick Coleman.

All of the suspensions are without pay.

Artest, O'Neal and Jackson -- who all threw punches at fans in the stands
or on the court at the end of the nationally televised Pacers-Pistons game
Friday night -- began serving their suspensions Saturday. Indiana, limited
to just six players because of the suspensions and injuries, dropped an
86-83 decision to Orlando.

I would be really, really sorry that my organization had employed an
insane person like Artest.

The players should never go into the stands. Period.

The fans should never go on the floor. Period. They should never throw
anything on the floor, either.

One does not mitigate the other. It's not "The players should never go
in the stands, unless they're provoked." It's not "The fans should never
throw junk on the floor, unless there's a really bad call."

The mob wasn't at the point of extreme violence (if it ever was) until
Artest went up into the stands. Up until that point, you had ONE fan who
was seriously misbehaving. You probably had several others who were
misbehaving, but none of them directly assaulted a player.

The larger-scale retaliation against the players (fans rushing the
floor, lots of fans throwing drinks on players) didn't occur until at
least two or possibly three Pacers physically assaulted fans (I don't
know the exact timing of O'neal's blow to the fan relative to the
near-simultaneous rushing of the floor by other fans.) But it's clear
that an unhappy crowd was pushed to an extreme point by Artest, who was
pushed to an extreme point by the actions of a single fan.
