The Mavericks appear to have agreed on the major points of a trade that
will send Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross and James Singleton to
Washington for Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson.

The deal is not done. But a source said that the pieces of the trade have
been tentatively agreed upon.

The trade would require league approval, which could take until after
All-Star Weekend.

The Mavericks and Wizards have been trade partners before, when Dallas
acquired Devin Harris and Jerry Stackhouse for Antawn Jamison in 2004.
That was a trade that both teams viewed as a success.

Washington apparently has become resigned to the fact that Haywood, their
center who is having a solid season, would not re-sign this summer when
he is a free agent.

That, plus the fact that the Wizards will save a ton of money if the deal
goes down, is their motivation.

The Mavericks drafted Howard in 2003 and he has enjoyed great successes,
although he has been prone to controversial moments.

He's been struggling this year to recover from off-season ankle surgery
but has played well lately. Next season, his contract is a team option,
which could yield a payroll savings of $11 million for the Wizards.

I see this as another move that doesn't make sense for Dallas.

They have a small forward who is not playing well (Shawn Marion, an
oversized small forward who plays as a power forward (Dirk Dirk
Nowitzki), and now they are doing good by getting rid of the incosistent
troubled small forward, Josh Howard, but instead of getting size or a
reliable shooter, they are getting another small forward (Caron Butler)
who is the center of this deal, and the incosistent DeShawn Stevenson.
Does this make sense to anyone? Am I the only one confused here?

Wizards and Mavericks agree to multiple-player trade involving Caron
Butler

The Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks have agreed in principle to
a trade of Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson for Josh
Howard, Drew Gooden and other ancillary pieces, according to multiple
league sources.

The teams have not yet submitted a trade proposal to the NBA league
office for approval. The deal should be finalized by Monday, with the
Wizards also getting back James Singleton and Quinton Ross, according to
sources.

The trade dramatically changes the look of the Wizards (17-33). Butler
made two all-star appearances in his five seasons in Washington, Haywood
was the longest-tenured Wizard and final link to the Michael Jordan era
and Stevenson was a starter on two playoff teams. But a person with
knowledge of team's thinking said on Saturday that there could be more
changes on the way before the Thursday trade deadline.

"It's time to go in another direction," said the person, who spoke on
condition of anonymity because the trade is still being worked out.
"This wasn't working."

President Ernie Grunfeld declined comment when reached Saturday, but he
hinted earlier in the week that the Wizards would explore making changes
before Thursday's trade deadline. He expressed his disappointment that
the Wizards rank next-to-last in the Eastern Conference despite a
$79-million payroll, a roster that boasted three all-stars in Butler,
Antawn Jamison and Gilbert Arenas and a successful coach in Flip
Saunders. "I think on paper, this team looked good," Grunfeld said. "It
just hasn't won as much as we would've all liked it to."

The Wizards grossly underachieved this season, and have been rumored for
a makeover in the aftermath of season-ending suspensions for Arenas and
Javaris Crittenton, who brought guns to the locker room at Verizon
Center in a dispute last December.

They surrendered Butler, Haywood and Stevenson in what essentially is a
salary dump that provides almost $15 million in cap relief for the
2010-11 season. Ross is the only player the Wizards receive who is
signed through next season. The deal would also provide nearly $2.6
million in luxury tax relief this season for the Wizards, who will ship
out $19.7 million in salaries while getting back $17.3 million. Coupled
with the savings that the Wizards will already receive for suspensions
to Arenas and Crittenton, the luxury tax penalty could be reduced by
nearly $7 million.

There has also been talk by the Mavs about getting Gooden back after
30 days with a buyout possible.

what would that do to their salary cap...I think they are already taking 2
mil more in contracts than they send?

Gooden would be back pro-rated for games remaining team's percentage of
a veteran's minimum. About another half mil in salary plus tax.

What helps them most is Haywood. Dampier is playing on a bum knee when
he can play at all.
Haywood is a serviceable defensive center averaging 10 pts 10+ rbs and 2
blks.

Mavs Trade Howard In 7-player deal

http://ow.ly/16zB9M

The Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks have completed a seven-player
trade that launches Washington's long-anticipated rebuilding project in
earnest and sends Wizards mainstays Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood to
the Mavericks.

The teams agreed on the principal pieces Friday: Butler, Haywood and
DeShawn Stevenson to Dallas for Josh Howard and Drew Gooden. Mavericks
reserves Quinton Ross and James Singleton were added to the deal Saturday
and are also Washington-bound, with Dallas due to receive cash
considerations in addition to the three players.

Washington and Dallas have completed a trade call with the league office
to secure the NBA's required approval and will formally announce the
trade later Saturday, sources said.

"It makes us significantly better," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said.

The Wizards have been talking to several teams for weeks about deals
involving Butler and Haywood, most notably Houston with Tracy McGrady's
$22.5 million expiring contract. But talks with Dallas had stalled in the
past week, partly because of Washington's insistence that the Mavericks
take guard Stevenson in any Butler deal.

When Washington agreed late in the week that it would add Haywood to the
deal, talks picked up Thursday night and only grew more serious Friday,
resulting in the trade that is widely regarded as the first major domino
needed to loosen things up on the trade market in advance of Thursday's
annual trading deadline.

"We're all disappointed in how our season has gone. We need some
freshness and we're getting proven players who will help us, and it gives
us some flexibility down the road," Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld
said. "We want to remain competitive and maybe this group can provide a
spark. The group had gotten stale, and we needed a change."

The acquisitions of Butler and Haywood, meanwhile, would be a welcome
spark for the sputtering Mavericks, with Butler moving into the spot
vacated by Howard and Haywood arriving as another rim-protecting
defensive anchor in the wake of a knee injury that has compromised the
effectiveness of Mavs center Erick Dampier.

"Caron is an established professional and an All-Star with the ability
to score from anywhere on the floor," said Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks'
president of basketball operations. "Brendan will solidify our center
position with athleticism, shot blocking and defense. DeShawn has also
shown that he can be a talented asset to this team."

Acquiring Haywood and having the chance to re-sign him this summer would
likely fill the void Dallas thought it filled last summer, when the Mavs
signed Orlando center Marcin Gortat to a lucrative offer sheet, only for
the Magic to unexpectedly match the offer to the restricted free agent.

Washington inevitably wanted Beaubois added to the deal, but Mavs owner
Mark Cuban said earlier this week that his young point guard is "pretty
much untouchable" as Thursday's trade deadline approaches. But sources
say the Wizards are gaining so much payroll and luxury-tax relief --
while also keeping Jamison to either keep or move in a separate deal
before Thursday's deadline -- that they couldn't pass on Dallas' offer.

The potential for acquiring two front-line players -- since Butler and
Haywood would immediately become key rotation players for Dallas --
renewed the Mavs' interest and convinced them to relent on Stevenson.

Speaking to a group of reporters Thursday, Cuban said: "We kind of know
the parameters [under] which we would make a deal. If somebody meets our
parameters, we'll pull the trigger. But if not, we're not going to do it.
I don't see us doing something just to do something because that'll kill
our flexibility this summer. But in the event that there's somebody that
really upgrades our talent and really makes our team better, then maybe
we'll do it."
