Artest swap this past summer. I was worried Ron Ron might undermine
the team, fracture the chemistry, etc. Plus I was a HUGE Trevor
fan...really love his play.
Color me pleasantly surprised.
Ron's had a few batshit crazy moments, but they've all been off the
court, and pretty safe stuff at that. It's been very cool seeing him
shed the initial nervousness and he seems to REALLY be settling in.
Gotta believe Paula P. and Bron Bron are taking notice. :-) His
pluses seem to be really helping Kobe as well, which has gotta be
scaring the shit outta the neighbors.
Yeah, it's early...but I'm so happy to say that I was WAY wrong about
him, so far.

I couldn't agree with you more. Ariza was and is a very good player
without the baggage and Artest was scary and still is a bit scary. But
after last night's game I'm pleasantly surprised and impressed. Though
in my mind will be on probation till January or later. What I really
find entertaining is his snappy lighthearted comebacks to questions
from the media. He obviously has a quick mind. Here is to Artest
becoming the player and person I never thought he could be. A true
professional.

I agree. I've been impressed with his basketball IQ and his vision.
Some very nice passes and creating plays for others. He's an all-star
level player, and for short bursts can be the featured guy. He's
played well with the bench mob guys, perhaps a better fit than Odom in
that role. Artest isn't afraid to score or be aggressive if need be.
Odom is passive.

These anecdotes just bounce off people now. Artest is a benevolent
crazy. Or so we think. Being around this nuttiness every day is a little
different from merely hearing about the nuttiness in secondhand
anecdotes. I know for a fact he routinely broke plays on offense and is
still a handful behind the scenes, and the Rockets buried every 2008-09
story that would have made this patently clear. For instance, Artest
routinely walked around in his underwear in public places: the Rockets�
team bus, hotels, you name it. People around the team barely flinched
after a while. Before Game 7 of the Lakers series � only the biggest
game of the entire season � they finally flinched.
Here�s what happened: Artest missed the first two team buses (the
ones for players, coaches and team personnel) from Houston�s hotel to
the Staples Center and barely made the third and final bus, which was
reserved for business staff, sponsors and friends of the team. These
stunned people watched Artest sprint to the bus right before it left,
jump on and take one of the remaining seats � yes, wearing only his
underwear. Owner Leslie Alexander happened to be sitting on the bus and
witnessed the whole thing.
And you wonder why the Houston Rockets didn�t make any effort whatsoever
to bring back Artest.

The only concern should be RonRon taking bad shots late in games.
Other than that, he'll be just fine.

Sounds like he didn't have much respect for the Rocket's organization.

A lot of times it's not as if Kobe or Fish take good ones themselves,
so it shouldn't be considered wrong if Artest launches some.

I was afraid he'd be an instinctual offensive player who wasn't
particularly strong at reading and reacting to the defense. Turns out
he's entirely capable of being very patient and effective taking what
he's given. On that same note he seems to be a pretty good spot up
shooter too, instead of a chucker who can get hot occasionally but is
only effective in bulk.
Defensively I've been a bit surprised too - he does most of his work
before his opponent even gets the ball. When his man does have the ball
he keeps the pressure up, even if it means his man might get by him once
in awhile. It seems that speeding up the offensive player and making him
react perhaps quicker than he'd like to are more important than playing
it "safe" and giving up jumpers. With Bynum and Gasol (presumably)
playing behind him around the rim this makes total sense.

Actually that statement is true so misses on the sarcasm front. =)
Artest was a laker before Yao elected to have his surgery and the
serious extent of the injury was known after that.
Was the end of July when the news broke it was possibly career ending.
