Marko could play with Panathinaikos next season... Jaric is one
of the youngsters of Yugoslavian origin, with a passport and a
lot of international experience, who are brought up” outside
Yugo borders. This kind of tradition started with Dejan Bodiroga
(Panathinaikos), and continued with Predrag Stojakovic
(Sacramento Kings), Dragan Tarlac (Olympiakos), Milan Gurovic
(Barcelona). Marko is fitting up in the “sons and fathers”
stories too, because his father, Srecko Jaric is a Yugoslavian
basketball legend from the 60’s, so the “genetic engineering”
found fertile ground in young and talented Marko. The paradox is
that all the players mentioned are more well known outside
Yugoslavia, and have recently all become members of the Yugo NT.
Marko played as a teenager for Radnicki (where his father played
for long time) and Red Star, and then went to Greece where he
played for two seasons (1996-1998). In 1998 he was an early
entry candidate for the NBA Draft, but withdrew his candidacy
and signed with Fortitudo Bologna. This season he won his first
Italian Championship with Fortitudo (PAF). Jaric was a member of
the Yugoslavian junior NT with whom he took the bronze medal at
the Junior EC in France in 1996, and two years later in Palermo
at the U21 European Championship he was a member of the
Yugoslavian NT that took gold medal. Marko was on Zeljko
Obradovic’s roster last year for the EC in France, but he didn’t
play because due to injury. He has improved greatly this season
in Fortitudo, and his moment is yet to come. L.A. Clippers took
him from 30th place, but it’s still not clear whether he's going
to play in the “worst” team in NBA or back in Europe. Marko can
play three positions: point guard, shooting guard and small
forward. He has very good athletic skills, ball handling, and
have a very good anticipation of the game, so he is good in
steals. After the draft Jaric said: “I'm a little disappointed
because I'm not a first-round pick. But, who knows? Maybe this
is better. I don't know what they have in mind - whether they
want me to play immediately or to stay in Europe one or two more
years and come here a more complete player. It depends. That's
why maybe it's better to get picked in the second round.” Need
time to mature, because a good point guard can only be a mature,
older player with enough experience. There is a similarity with
Predrag Danilovic in height, body structure and psychology,
because both the players are not easy to deal with. Of course
Danilovic has a name and results behind him, is Jaric's
toughness just a kid’s arrogance, or winning mentality... only
time will tell. Now he is has great potential, and is a great
prospect for the future.
