Adelman must have done the right thing by complaining about all of
Houston's back-to-backs these two weeks, because his team played like
they were rested and the Pistons played like they were stuck in mud.

Still, Adelman has a point -- the league does a lousy job scheduling,
with far too many back to back games and too much of an imbalance between
teams. Reading various sites it seems pretty clear that the team
playing the second game of a back to back is at a definite disadvantage,
and when some clubs (like the Pistons) regularly play 6 or 7 more sets a
year than others, that can add up to 2 or 3 more losses a season.

Evidently, the league lets teams submit dates when they won't play at
home. For instance, Utah will not play ANY games at home on Sunday. I
can see giving clubs some flexibility, but they should limit it to maybe
10 dates a season. Considering that NBA clubs are the biggest single
source of revenue for most arenas, they should be able to dictate dates
to the arenas, not vice versa. It's not going to kill the Jazz if a few
of their fans in Salt Lake City get mad -- they already sell beer at Jazz
games.

What makes things worse is the league also avoids scheduling games to
compete with NFL games. I can see avoiding games on Sundays, but they
also avoid games on Monday nights. The fact is that Monday Night
Football isn't what it used to be, and the NBA would do better if they
cut down on back to backs and started playing more on Mondays.

At any rate, teams like the Pistons who regularly get shafted should
consider gaming the system and start booking their arenas with Romanian
poetry readings, interpretive dance festivals, and accordion recitals at
strategic dates to play havoc with the league's schedulers until they
agree to bring the back to backs under control.

Good points all. The Pistons got behind in this game and never could
get much closer than 9. And Houston isn't that much better than
Detroit so you've got to believe the long travel and a game the
previous night played a part in it. It's one thing to have a back to
back within in the same region but to have a back to back where the
next game is so far away isn't fair. Espeically if the team that
didn't travel had the previous night off.

back games. So, who are the teams that are benefiting?
