It also appears that he is hardly a sure thing to be even that good.
He has put on weight and lost quickness already this season. This not
a good sign. he is 32 years old ands he looks it. The hope was that
the time off would put spark in his legs; instead the years of boozing
and overeating have taken away his talent, and it ain't coming back.
O'Brien clearly has given him a one-way ticket to the doghouse. He is
playing a career back-up 3 in front of him.
I know that on rare occasions NBA teams buy out contracts of deadbeats
like Baker. I do not know how it works -- do any of you? -- and I
suspect there are provisions to prevent rich teams from clearing away
salary cap space. But, assuming it can be done, Danny Ainger might
want to tell Wyc Grousbeck that the Cs should buy out Baker. I'd be
willing to forego any free agent signing after the season just to get
him off the books. Then we might have some salary cap light after the
2005 season, instead of having to wait until 2006.
Right now, Vin Baker is extremely expensive dead weight.

Is he drinking again? Does anyone know what is going on?
Don
He looks like it.
The Nets bought out Mutumbo's contract last year, does anyone know the details?
Cause something needs to be done with Baker. He is killing this team
I'm not an expert on the cap by any means, but I think this is
generally how it worked in Mutombo's case. He was bought out with 2
years remaining on the deal at 37 million (!!!) total, and the buyout
has been put at 27 mil (although some reports had it a bit higher at
30 m). As a result, the Nets -did- receive some cap relief in each of
the two years remaining (a little under 5 mil this year, and a little
over 5 mil next year), and it appears to approximate the amount saved
in the buyout over the value of the contract.
So the answer with Baker may be to see what it would take to make him
go away. Unfortunately, unlike Mutombo, there is probably -no- market
for Baker's services post-buyout, so he would be relinquishing $$$ and
only getting retirement in return. Mutombo had the prospect of taking
a buyout now and still getting signed to a contract by another team.
Not sure if I can say it is all on Vinny. Granted he is not a monster on
the boards but how many times are we throwing it inside to him nowadays?
In the LA game he started off well scoring or getting to the line after
being fed in the post and we totally went away from going to him. Obie
certainly has not made it a point to go inside with any of the bigs on the
team. Although we don't have Hakeem making the post moves, it is necessary
to throw the ball in the post on occasion to keep the perimeter game open.
Just my thoughts...
You can get informed. Read Larry Coon's NBA Salarcy Cap FAQ for
all the details that are available to the public.
http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm
Question 57 has the details.
Vinnie and the Celtics have to agree to separate. If it's done
before January 10th, the portion of Vinnie's salary that is
guaranteed can be negotiated down to some lesser amount. After
the 10th, no salary reduction can take place (unless a player is
in the last year of his contract).
The reduced salary amount agreed to counts against the cap,
divided by the number of years left in the player's contract.
So if in the next couple of days the Celtics and Vinnie agree to
a buyout, and reasonable terms are reachd (50% of the remaining
contract), Vinnie's salary cap hit would be reduced to 5-7
million per year. If it isn't done in the next few of days, they
won't save any money at all.

You dont think he knows????????
Stupider mistakes have been made by NBA GMs, through ignorance.
Most notable was Riley's failure to make a contract offer in time
to his point guard; he became a free agent and signed in San
Antonio.
It wasn't Riley who made the error. Anthony Carter's agent forgot to inform
Heat Management that Carter would pick up the option for the final year. Carter
would have made $4 million this year. I would guess that he signed for about $1
million with San Antonio.

And then there was the time two crooks wearing Bo and Luke masks rob an
armored truck, allowing Greg Poppovich to accuse the real cousins of the
crime. Well, you can imagine Uncle Duffy was up in arms when he heard about
that! But Deputy Red Auerbach fell in love with Daisy, and then got fired by
Boss Stern for letting his hoped-for-in-law-cousins, Bo and Luke, escape from
jail upon Daisy's request. It was a barnburner, let me tell you. But then, the
Duke boys ran Rosco off the road with the General Lee -- and Boss Stern
concocted the perfect scheme to grab the deed to the Duke's farm: have Rosco
bring a personal injury suit against the Dukes! Meanwhile, Bo and Luke became
reverse bank robbers in order to replace some stolen money into Boss Stern's
safe, and Uncle Duffy got arrested when he attempted to help a fugitive escape
from Boss Stern's clutches. So Jerry "Cooter" Krause made plans to break him
out of jail -- but what Cooter didn't know was that Daisy was making her own
plans to elope with Boss Stern's nephew, Stu Lee. Yee haw! So then an old
friend of Uncle Duffy's was released after spending 10 years in prison and
returned to Hazzard County to get revenge on Boss Stern, who had framed the
postmistress along with the Dukes for a crime they didn't commit, but an
accidental shot of truth serum put Boss Stern on the wrong side of his
gambling partners and sprang the Dukes from trumped-up gambling charges, so
the Boar's Nest was taken over by thieves for use as a command post during the
planned robbery of an armored truck, while Boss Stern tried to steal a
stallion during Lulu Stern's Stakes Race, and had Bo and Luke arrested for
rustling twice when they try to help a neighbor win, while the Hazzard County
Jail became the conference center for syndicate kingpins, so the Dukes tried
to put the syndicate out of business.
Or something like that.
