In response the ranking of Penn guards -- here's my thoughts after almost 40
years of watching Penn basketball.

1. Dave Wohl -- Lead the best Penn team ever -- had a good NBA career. Was
extraordinarily driven.
2. Mat Maloney -- Best scorer -- still in the NBA.
3. Bobby Willis -- Best guard on the only Penn team to make the Final Four.
4. Jeff Newman -- Best ball handler in Penn history. Was best player on 66
Ivy champs.
5. Michael Jordan -- Great all round Ivy League player.

Second five
6. Jerome Allen -- best defender (did not develop the offense to rank
higher.)
7. Corky Calhoun -- played guard his senior year.
8. Steve Bilsky -- Great clutch player -- (didn't have the individual
impact of the top five).
9. Ira Bowman -- Great defensive player -- in the Pros now.
10. Jed Ryan -- Electric scorer

Honorable Mention
Alan Cotler 71' guard made it the final eight -- deadly shooter with size.
Second guard on the 79 team (can't remember his name) Made the free throws
against NC in 79.
Third guard on the 79 team (can't remember his name) Lead 80 team to a
first round NCAA win.

Kenny Hall was the third guard on the 79 team. Again, I note that John
Beecroft was atwo time FIRST team ALL-Ivy.

I forgot Willis...you're right about him. I certainly don't remember Calhoun
ever playing guard. Wasn't he 6'7" or 6'8"?

The other missing name is Boonie Salters.

Beecroft was a superb ball handler and could make the open shot from 18 in
but had no ability to create his own shot and was marginal defensively.

Well, if my calling Pierce a guard was a stretch, what do you call that?

I do remember Dr. J. playing guard his last season as a Sixer, so anything is
possible.

I believe Perry Bromwell belongs prominently on this list.

I agree with NJworm. Any list of alltime Penn guards without Bromwell is
clearly incomplete.

While Arnolie's clutch 10/10 FT shooting in the upset of #10 Villanova in '82
was the highlight of the Dark Ages (ie - the Littlepage/Schneider years), I
wouldn't consider him one of the great Penn guards. My main memory of that
game was Paul Little's alley-oop dunk off of a half court pass. It was the
only successful lob I ever saw a Quaker team complete prior to the arrival of
Jerome Allen.

With all respect to MJ, Jerome, and Matt . . . my vote for best guard in the
last 15 years goes to Perry Bromwell. I am still puzzled by the 1986-87
team performing as poorly as it did against major competition with a team as
talented as it was. Chalk it up to Schneider, the worst coach in the long
history of Penn basketball.

The only reason Bowman did not start over Kegler was due to
Dunphy's loyalty to seniors. Comcast interviewed 76er Bowman
along with Dunphy shortly before the Illinois game. Bowman
reflected on his career at Penn. He said that Dunphy came to him
and asked him if it would bother him to come off the bench
behind Kegler. Ira replied that Scott deserved to start. But
during money time, Kegler was on the bench and Bowman was out
there. One of my all-time favorite Penn players. Great showman.
Perhaps the best open floor defender to wear a Penn jersey. I
never saw a Quaker player pick opponents' pockets as easily as
Ira. Tremendous transition player and finisher. I just wish he
could have played four full years here.

Best Penn guards during my 20 years of fanhood:

1. Jerome Allen. One of the best Ivy players ever. Michigan 62-
60. Enough said.
2. James "Boonie" Salters. Great floor general. Clutch FTs vs.
NC and St John's during winning time in the 79 NCAAs.
3. Michael Jordan. Tremendous senior season. One of my favorite
all-time Penn players. Great name.
4. Matt Maloney. Could shoot the lights out. Defense underrated.
One of the hardest working players. Met him at Jersey Shore last
summer. Real nice guy.
5. Ira Bowman. see above.

Didn't see enough of Perry Bromwell to give an opinion.
Only saw Willis' senior season. However he was amazing in pick-
up games at Gimbel (until my roommate wrecked his knee). How
could Weinhauer let his players play pick-up during the season??
Honorable mention to Angelo Reynolds. Would be a Penn 3 pt.
leader if the rule was in place at that time.
Paul Chambers??

I can't believe Booney Salters is not being mentioned more prominently in this
thread; as an all-around guard, he definitely rates in the top ten, if not the
top five. He carried the '80 team on his shoulders, a little like MJ, not
quite as quick, but a more consistent shooter. Had the same leadership
qualities.

Also want to nominate Stan Greene, who made such an impact, that the fans
cheered for him 10 years after he graduated!

Bromwell, Bowman, and Willis were the best pure athletes I ever saw play guard
for Penn.

I'm sure you meant to say "worst coach in the long history of *organized*
basketball."

Okay......finally, after finally recovering from the disappointing game in
Winston-Salem....I am ready to suggest my list of top Quaker guards:
(1) Jerome Allen----in my mind, no question---he was much the
better player than Maloney during his college years. He was ready for the NBA
upon graduation, while it took Matt extra work in the CBA to get there. Just
look at that last game against Alabama----Jerome played the greatest game I
ever saw a Penn guard play.
(2) Matt Maloney---what a great backcourt! It made an otherwise average
team great(at least by Ivy standards). (3) Dave
Wohl---while I only saw him once at Penn, I do remember him as an NBA player
and he could play. As a starting guard on the most dominant Penn team ever on
a national basis, he deserves to be here even though I didn't get much of a
chance to see that team. Bilsky doesn't and, as he prevented me from getting a
tee shirt, he is on my perpetual shit list unless he makes it up by ordering a
few hundred shirts and offering to sell them to the fans. (4) Michael
Jordan----a starting guard on an undefeated Ivy team and the heart and soul of
back to back winners, without the kind of talent that earlier teams had, he
clearly belongs. (5) James
(Booney) Salters----while not the athlete that Bobby Willis was, this guy made
the difference on the 1979 final four team and single handedly took a
rebuilding 1980 team to the NCAA's AND WON A GAME! A great Quaker.

Distinguished Honorable Mention: Bobby Willis, Mark Lonetto(lost out due to
a weak senior year), Perry Bromwell(nice player---didn't make them win like
Booney did, even with more talent) and Ira Bowman(if you can't beat out Kegler
for a starting position, you don't have the real fire in the belly-----again,
fun to watch though). Sorry Lyle, Barry Pierce, although short by forward
standards, was a forward and played like a forward.
No Way list: John Beecroft----average guard on a great team that lost
at home to K-State in the NCAA's, Jerry Simon---touted as a future great,
before he played, not after-----Matt Langel(sorry), and the Mox(great senior
year---bad playoff game). Fun topic though----now can we keep the
hypotheticals going until next November????

Corky did start at 2 guard in 71-72. The point was Al Cotler at 6-5. Corky
was capable of playing anyposition on the floor.
