2012 THROWBACK
This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the Nationals' first playoff
berth in 2012. That season, they finished atop the NL East with a 98-64
record (the most wins in team history, '05-present) and were eliminated by
the Cardinals in Game 5 of the NL Division Series.
Right-hander Tyler Clippard, who rejoined the Nats on a Minor League deal
last month, was a member of that bullpen. As camp came to a close this
week, Clippard reflected on the vibe of the Nationals this time in 2012 as
they left Florida to begin their playoff quest:
"I remember [Spring Training] pretty vividly because up until that point,
we had been kind of a losing franchise," said Clippard. "Then, in 2011, we
took a huge step forward and we ended the season right around .500. That
was kind of eye-opening for the players to say, 'You know what? We're
pretty close.' And that gave us a lot of confidence.
"Coming into 2012, I think the way everyone was performing, the vibe in the
clubhouse, the leadership that we had, it was like, 'Don't sleep on us.' …
I remember Mark DeRosa was a guy who said that pretty vocally, like, 'I've
been around a lot of clubs. You guys look good.' We took a lot of
confidence going into that season, and we were expecting to be pretty good
that year."

and memories.
