WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The middle-aged man with the eternally elastic arm stood on the mound behind a screen and fired pitch after pitch. Over two rounds of batting practice to Washington Nationals minor leaguers, Livan Hernandez anonymously bisected the plate. He threw hundreds of pitches. He missed the strike zone three times.
“We had to tell these guys, ‘Do you know who that guy is?’ ” said Randy Knorr, a longtime Nationals coach and minor league manager — and a teammate of Hernandez’s long ago.
