To the Rays, Scott Kazmir was a guy with a 5.92 ERA who was due to
make at least $22.5 million between now and 2012. To the Angels, he's
a two-time All-Star who is signed for two more years with a track
record of success against the Yankees.
However you slice it, the deal gives the impression that the Rays
aren't holding much hope of returning to the postseason this year.
They dealt Kazmir just as he was pitching better, in exchange for a
couple 21-year-old minor leaguers (pitcher Alex Torres and third
baseman Matthew Sweeney) and a player to be named. With a four-game
deficit in the wild-card race -- and two teams to leapfrog -- it's
probably wise for the Rays to start looking to the future..

There's some speculation it's Jordan Walden -- look at the Angels' minor
leaguers on the DL.
Of course, it could be someone on the 40-man that they think wouldn't
clear waivers, so they're waiting for the end of the season. Maddon
seems to know who it's going to be.

It could be one of two or three players conditioned on where the Rays
finish the season.
This is a wait and see for the fans. I can remember when Atlanta
traded Doyle Alexander to the Tigers for a player to be named. In the
end Atlanta got the better of the deal. Alexander went 5-0 for tyhe
Tigers that September and Atlanta got a futute HOF player in John
Smoltz.
This deal does free up some money to extend Crawford's contract if
necessay and even keep Upton. I am not so sure that Upton is in the
long term future of the Rays. Perez may very well be the future CF for
the Rays.
The move now frees up a roster spot for Sonnanstine to return to the
majors. He starts Tuesday. There is no commitment after Tuesday's
start that he will continues in the rotation or whether Davis or
Talbot will fill in for the rest of the season.

The chances of winning the division are all but nill.
Even with three games with Texas and six with Boston the chances are
slim.
Kazmir dispite leading most of the pitching stats for the Rays is not
saying all that much. He has been inconsistant at best. The last three
starts just probably improved trade talks between the Rays and the
Angels. We got Kazmir from the Mets for next to nothing. There were
those in the Mets organization that felt his throwing motion would not
make him a viable long term prospect in their system. It also is known
is some circles that Kazmir and pitching coach Hickey are not on the
best of terms.
