In a fit of weekend cleaning, I came upon a 1992 Baseball Weekly with
the top 10 NL West prospect reports. Here are the Giants top 10 for
1992:

1) Royce Clayton
2) Salomon Torres
3) Steve Hosey
4) Derek Reid
5) Joe Roselli
6) Kevin McGehee
7) John Patterson
8) Kevin Rogers
9) Rick Huisman
10) Eric Christopherson

Their projected 1995 opening day Roster was:

C - Christopherson
1B - Will Clark
2B - Patterson
3B - Williams
SS - Clayton
LF - Ted Woods!
CF - Reid
RF - Hosey
P - Torres

For contrast, here are 1996 & 1997:

1996 1997

1) Shawn Estes Joe Fontenot
2) Joe Fontenot Dante Powell
3) Jacob Cruz Mike Caruso !
4) Jay Canizaro Mike Villano
5) Dante Powell Russ Ortiz
6) Steve Soderstrom Steve Soderstrom
7) Rich Aurilia Darin Blood
8) Marcus Jensen Jacob Cruz
9) Russ Ortiz Jason Brester
10) Jesse Ibarra Keith Foulke !

Why is Cruz falling? Too little power? Getting old? If Hill is
staying, why not use Cruz instead of Benard as the extra OF?

: Wow.

On the other side of the ledger, apparently Trevor Wilson has begun a
comeback attempt, and is now pitching with a low-minors affiliate of the
Angels.

What happened to these guys? I know that Patterson faded from sight, but
I've lost track of Christopherson, Wood (the modern day Mark Leonard) and
Hosey. Didn't even know about Reid.

Maybe cause the system as a whole has gotten better? I'm more interested
in why Aurilia and Canizaro fell out of the top 10, but Soderstrom stayed
at #6. Interesting also that Erik Simpson's man, Jesse Ibarra, was #10
in 1996.

As for Cruz, he's not a star prospect in RF IMO because he lacks HR
power, but I bet he could be an above average RF. I remember him being
pretty good in RF except for one really ugly error last year in
September.

Good for Trevor. Hopes it works out. Especially if it helps the Giants
somehow, like he makes the start on August 31 and we hammer him....

Hickerson was playing single-A ball with the Phillies last month. One
of my friends played with him. Eric Gunderson was playing with the Mets
at trhe begining of the season, and McMlellan, who the hell knows?

: Really? I forget how we lost Gunderson. I remember being really excited about
: him when he first came up and pitched great his first game, then fell apart
: later. Anyone know where he is now?

Gunderson is currently on the roster of the Texas Rangers.

Actually, he signed with Texas on January 24 (my birthyday!), 1997.
