His AVG has been rising like this for over a month I think. I agree
that he could be a callup, but the Eric Young acquisition ruins that
possibility. With Aurilia, Durham, Young, Neifi and Ransom, they
already have 5 middle infielders. Say, he doesn't happen to have a
reverse platoon-split, to be a "left-handed" pinch hitter?

Disappointing start. If you make him a starter at Norwich next year,
I just worry if that would hurt his confidence. Why not leave him as
a starter at Fresno? If he struggles, move him to the bullpen. He
figures to be a reliever in the majors anyway.

Possibly his last year in the organization with Jennings and Conte
having been drafted this year. Holm also had 10 games at 3B this
year. I don't know what the club thinks of Dayton Buller. He played
11 games with Hagerstown before apparently getting hurt and then
playing in the Arizona rookie league. I know that BA's Josh Boyd
ranked him as the Giants 2nd best catching prospect at the beginning
of the year (behind Lunsford but ahead of Knoedler and Rodriguez).

A very strong finish to the year. Wait until next year now as that
should be his last start of the year.

He has been a very pleasant surprise. No power, but apparently he is
very fast and rather good defensively in CF. That combo with an OBP
near .400 is enough to keep him interesting. Hornostaj seems very
similar in that regard, just several years younger.

Speaking of Coutlangus who was the Giants' 19th round draft pick, I am
wondering what happened to the Giants' 18th round draft pick OF Pat
Dobson. From what I can tell, he somehow got injured. After that, he
was sent to Scottsdale, apparently because he might get more PAs there
too, but he never appeared in AZL game (today is the final day of the
season there too).

Speaking of draft picks, did you see that the Giants signed their 24th
rounder, RHP Brian Wilson out of LSU, the other day, right before he
returned to classes? (Please insert Beach Boys reference here.) I
hope he turns out better than LSU teammate RHP Bill Sadler has turned
out so far.

Just a thought, but it could be argued that this is almost a two level
jump from rookie ball (AZL and GCL) to ss-A (NWL and NY-Penn), which
skip the advanced rookie ball (Appalachian and Pioneer). That said,
the Orioles are the only team I know with a team at each of these
three levels.

Just when I had said he needed more BB and XBH too.

Agreed. Hey, he now has 9.0 IP this year. Enough for a complete game
makes a complete season.

Well, that brings a little smiley smile to my face. He was highly regarded
before his Tommy John surgery, to the tune of being Baseball America's 12th
best college RHP prospect as late as Feburary. I like the idea of scooping
up the talented players with bum wings, and hoping they pan out on the
cheap. I don't know if Aardsma would be in that exact category, but he was
the #6 college player overall in the same list.

no, he seems to have no discernable split, at least this year.

might be, but he survived not being drafted just fine. he even played a
game, as best we can tell, at short. I expect he'd be fine either way.

that works for me, too. I just see more room at Norwich.

> I don't know what the club thinks of Dayton Buller.

I know he hasn't hit much: sub-700 OPS this year and last, mostly in
Arizona. is his defense really good?

Rodriguez is a little old, and Knoedler had been pitching. I have to
think Knoedler's ahead of Buller right now; at least he has a little pop.

no idea. there seems to have been lots of work on the side in Arizona.

I did. Tommy John will take him out for a year, but he was pretty good
for a while there. probably worth the risk if they had the cash to spare.

I usually expect things like walks and strikeouts to change less.

yurp. too bad about the lost year.

It was a long shot.
With another 3 for 4 game, he is now hitting .350/.423/.438. That is
a great average, with above average patience to draw walks, but little
power. He played 65 games at 2B and 20 games at 3B this year.
Assuming he can play both 2B and 3B adequately at the MLB level, maybe
making him a September callup is not a bad idea just so he is not a
free agent (at least as I think I understand the rules) during the
off-season. We can let Feliz go during the off-season and have
Dallimore as the backup instead. This would save a little money.
That said, Feliz is a couple years younger than Dallimore, and
Dallimore's career minor league numbers make this year look like a bit
of an outlier, particularly the BB/PA. Last year was his first year
in AAA, and he hit .294/.346/.408.

Okay, I think you convinced me.

Maybe, although that is unclear. You probably have Thomas, Treadway,
Taschner, Clark also starting at Norwich next year. Add in Valdez ...

I have no idea.

All I am suggesting is that there must be some tools that scouts
really like about Buller. But I definitely agree that Knoedler and
Rodriguez are ahead of him. I don't know how Rodriguez rates
defensively, but he has finished the year hitting so well that he
could push Lunsford out of the backup role (if Torrealba becomes the
starter). I would hope to see that Buller gets more playing time next
year, but he will have to fight Jennings and Conte for that. That may
leave Buller at Salem-Keizer when June begins.

Definitely.

Thanks to you and Grant for your comments. You guys follow amateur
baseball a lot better than I do. I did not know about the Tommy John
or how highly he was ranked before the apparent injury. This may
explain why he wanted to get signed, if he is not going to play
baseball this year anyway.

I agree, but sometimes pitchers are so cognizant of the change in
levels that they try to be too fine and pitch for the corners. They
don't trust their stuff as Mike Krukow would say.

> > > F.Liriano

He is still young, though.
I think he is also eligible for the rule 5 draft this year if not
protected (signed 9/9/2000), but I don't see any teams taking a flier
on an injury risk who has never pitched above low-A essentially.

absolutely. but Feliz and El Malo are mostly useless, and Young should be
allowed to go, so Dallimore is better than nothing. at least he's free.

perhaps. I'd give Garcia a spot somewhere before Treadway or Taschner.
if that spot happens to be in Fresno, as I said, just fine.
