If they want to save Posey from taking a beating behind home plate, why
not try him at second base? After all, he was a shortstop in college.
That way Belt could stay at first and they fill a need at second.

Is Posey really taking a beating behind the plate any more than every
other starting catcher in MLB? I'm tired of hearing that phrase without
any further explanation given.

If he is getting a 'bigger beating' behind the plate compared to other
catchers, why is that so? Give some proof. If not then why don't we
just admit we hold him to a lower standard of resiliency than we do all
other 29 starting catchers in the league. Then we can just start
calling him Buster Pussy and be done with it. We can put him in a
ballerina tu-tu in the dugout where he can rest up.

Awesome Lincecum

I think part of it is that Posey is so "valuable" that they want to
protect their investment, so every ding he gets is magnified. If
Cabrera, a much bigger guy, was moved to 1B, then it makes sense to
move the more fragile Posey too. But putting him at 1B makes him
much less valuable.

I like the idea of trying Posey at 2B though, even though I think
he's too slow to play middle infield. College is different. He was
probably the best fielder in his school so he played SS. If he can
play 2B at the pro level, they probably wouldn't have put him at
catcher. And at the rate Uggla is making errors, how much worse can
Posey be?

But now that Hector is out, Posey has to play catcher, unless the
backup catcher can hit.

BTW, I don't know if Posey takes a beating more often than other
catchers or not, but I'd say Hector does. It's unreal how often he
gets nailed. Some are his fault, bad technique or bad hands. But
some are just bad luck, like the 2 foul tips that knocked him out of
the game. Nothing you can do about those.

Hector takes a beating because he catches Lincecum. That's why Susac
will catch Timmy's next start instead of Buster.

Mauer got moved to 1B for the same reason.

Hector takes a beating because Hector is not a good catcher. At the only time he gets the ball solid is when it clangs off his mask. Then there's the fact that he couldh't throw out my grandmother if she took off from first. I'll leave his batting average out of the rant for now. :)

With regards to moving Buster to 2nd base, that's not such a great idea for him. He's already got a damaged ankle and playing the pivot as second could expose him to some serious damage if the base runner decided to take him out with a hard slide. No?

Pitch in the dirt might give you a bruise, but it won't give you
concussion or put you in DL. And since Posey doesn't catch
Lincecum, if Posey's taking a beating, you can't blame Lincecum. :-)

Today's helmets are supposed to be much improved, but apparently not
improved enough.

Yeah you may be right. It's just that the 2B situation is so sad
that we're trying to find any way to improve the hitting. Posey
looks so slow when he runs around the bases I'm not sure he can do
it anyway. But then again, I can't imagine Scutaro much faster
either, so who knows. Didn't they try Belt at 2B one time, or was
it Francoeur? Wait, Belt's lefthanded, so probably wasn't him.

No. He's the best secondbaseman the Giants have.
