Championship Series:
A's over Mariners in 6 - Here's where M's vulnerability will cost them.
Braves over Giants in 6 - Too much for Giants to overcome.
World Series:
Braves over A's in 7 - Could go other way...
It's safe to say that all of these teams have earned the right to be here.
Even the Yankees. There is no such thing as "backing into the post-season".
You get there by winning more games than your opponents. It doesn't make a
damn bit of difference if you win those games in May or September.
IOW: If the Yankees "backed in", does that mean the Red Sox "backed out"?
No. They were never in it. About a month ago, they needed to win a
minimum of 3/4 from the Yankees in Fenway and blew it big time, burying
what little chances they had.
You think the A's are getting to the WS? A humbling sweep awaits them
this week at the hands of the Yankees.

Agreed. The notion of "backing in" should be dispensed with.
If your magic number is 1, and the 2nd place team plays earlier in the day
than you do (and loses), or if you have an off-day when they play (and lose)
then you are said to have backed in.
Ridiculous.
[It doesn't take a knowledge of partial derivatives or LaPlace Transforms to
figure this out, but perhaps some mathematician out there can tell us the
probability of clinching a spot in the post-season without "backing in.]

Hey John, you're creeping me out.
