AMEN! GO PADS!
This is right on! I don't see many games, so when I stayed up past
midnight here to watch my favorite team - I was severely disappointed
to also have to watch my least favorite fans: Padre fans. I'm
ashamed to be of the same ilk...
Last spring my girlfriend moved to northern virginia, now my hope is
that the padres will move there as well. They certainly deserve better
than what I witnessed last night (ODL, Rancho Cucamanga deserves better).
pathetic.

And if you opened your eyes you'd see half the fans that were there were
probably there for the first time all year, or the first time in their
lives...
It wasn't a Padres crowd, or a Cubs crowd, but a crowd waiting to see
history, plain and simple...
If you don't get it still, take your head out of your ass...
This is something that only one other person has done, ever, and he did
it two days ago fer crissake...
So put down your crying towel and grow up...
Christ, are there any BASEBALL fans in here, all I've been hearing the
past couple of days is pissing and moaning about people cheering for
Sosa...As Bill Maher says, "Get over yourself"...
Total bullshit. Last nights display by the fans and the Padres organization
was totally out of line. From fans chanting, "Sammy, Sammy, Sammy", extolling
an opposing player to hit a grand slam in the 8th inning of a tie game, to the
deafening roar as it sailed out of the park, to the ovation, the curtain call,
the congratulatory message on the scoreboard to the fireworks (YES FIREWORKS),
was embarassing for the players and those of us who would really like to see
the Padres win a few games between now and the end of the season. Baseball has
become a three ring circus for people (I won't even call them fans) wanting
more than a baseball game to entertain them and last night was a perfect
example of where a lot of San Diegans are. Give me entertainment, give me
hype, give me a free tee shirt and give me a chance to be seen on ESPN and I
will be happy. Win a game....its no big deal. And the stadium will be packed
with these same people in the playoffs, not because it is the most exciting
time of year, but because it will be a cool place to be in October.
: But then again I'm a BASEBALL fan, not exclusively a Padres fan with a
: closed mind...
Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed the homerun chase very much, but
there are 14 other ballparks in the NL - and Sosa is welcome to hit
all he wants in those parks - but not in ours. Again, is that such
a wrong viewpoint to have? I love the pads, I don't want to see
*any* player smack them around (even if it was boeringer).
: And if you opened your eyes you'd see half the fans that were there were
: probably there for the first time all year, or the first time in their
: lives...
Yes, I would add that to support my stance that SD shouldn't have
a major league team - the crowds are clearly AAA (with all apologies
to the true fans - as few as we are).

when your done done telling me what a lousy baseball fan I am - could
you help me find a good governmental sounding name for the new NVa team.

I must note that I am not the author of this. One must speak to Baba
Booey when responding to this statement.
Jabberwocky
I agree. The name of the game is winning, not history.
Cheering Sosa when Tony lines out to him? What were
they thinking? Fireworks after Sosa gets the game-winning
homer? What were they thinking?
The Padre players are battling with everthing they have,
and to have the fans turn on them (yes, turn on them) has
got to be such an increadible let down.
San Diego doesn't deserve a winner.

By the way, fuck you very much...Childish enough for you?
I think the padres fans showed a lot of class last night, I hope that if a
padres was trying to break a record on the road, the fans would be half as
gracious as the padres fans were last night.

Right on brother...I was just saying the same thing the other day about
the class shown here by the fans...
You bet Sean. If you have a bit of time, you can look it up on this list. I
wondered out loud why nobody was brushing this guy off the plate. I took some
crap from the baseball "purists" in this group who seem to have no affiliation
with any team when it comes to being "a baseball fan first".

I think the attack on Padre fans in general is pretty off-base. It was
60000 of them on Tony Gwynn shirt night that proved that the 10th man
really does exist. There probably were a lot of fans there the last few
days who were there for the first time. There's nothing wrong with that.
That is how this home run race has singlehandedly rejuvenated the game. I
went on Monday, and paid respect to Sammy in his first at bat. I stood the
other three in order to see (every one else stood up), happily watching as
Hitch and Miceli handed him the silver sombrero. Even my baseball
IQ-lacking friend wanted to see a Sosa homer, but she added a few more Pad
homers, in addition, would be best. You can't have 60000 loyal fanatics in
the stands every game. It's pretty naive to think so.

No one has EVER hit it into the 3rd deck of the Murph...
Big Mac and Jose Canseco hit a couple into the press level last year
during inter-league games when we played the fuckin' A's though...
And that's a loooonnnngggg way up there too!

Although it was during a homerun hitting contest before the game, Dave Kingman
hit one into the press level, which is the third deck. I don't know if it is
possible to hit one into the upper deck. Speaking of which, I saw Greg Vaughn
hit a foul ball almost out of the stadium almost directly behind him. The ball
hit this little building that is right next to the new auxilary scoreboard in
the upper deck off third base.

Must you use that type of language *all* the time? You know what they say,
right bongbooey? Those who swear incessantly are usually ignorant. I don't
*think* you are ignorant, can you chill a little, or do I need to just
k-file you?

No, the press level is the 2nd deck, unless you're counting plaza as a
deck, which of course it isn't...
I guess I could try to tone it down some...
Just don't ask me to give up my lighter ;-)

I've never heard the levels referred to in that way before. Second
deck (when speaking of home runs) has always meant Loge. AFAIK,
nobody's hit one any higher, so beyond that is really irrelevant.
Although somebody (Baba Booey, I think) wrote that McGwire and Canseco
both did last year; can anybody else corroborate?
BTW, Baba Booey, can you please watch your attributions? You cut out
the attribution on the line you quoted. It's not a big deal here, but
carelessness with attributions often can lead to misunderstandings and
arguments.

I always do, but made a boo boo yesterday...
And McGwire and Canseco hit a couple in the press level last year...
It is irrelevant about 1st deck or 2nd deck, all we know is it takes a
monster shot to get it there...

Wait a minute. Are you saying they did it during the game? No one has ever
hit a ball in the Press Level during a regular game at the stadium and as I
mentioned earlier, Dave Kingman is the only one I know of who did it at all...a
HR contest before a game (which I witnessed). I went to the A's games last
year and watched batting practice and I don't recall seeing either one of them
hit one there.
No, they did it during BP...
Sorry, I should have clarified my statement...
And it wasn't on the same day either...
Canseco did it on the first day the A's were in town and McGwire did it
the second day...

When Sosa was announced, I responded with respectuful polite applause.
I stood, because everyone in front of me was standing, and dammit... I
wanted to see!
I was cheering at the top of my lungs... "Strike 'em out (Hitch, Kev,
pitcher du jour)!"
When he hit the GS, I watched in awe... and gave him his props with more
respectful applause... but when the ball came off his bat, the first words
out of my mouth were "Oh s**t!" While I do appreciate being there to see "a
piece of history" (although #63 will be a mere footnote) my instinctive
response was as a Padre fan.

"Field Level" is self-explanatory.
"Plaza" is the seats you walk down to from ground level
"Loge" and "Club" (depending on which section) is the second deck
"Press Level" is the small third deck just above Loge
"View" is the euphemism for the nosebleed seats in the upper deck.
Simple, no? :o)
