I'm very happy the Phils got Halladay without giving up Happ.
Seems to me all the pressure is on Hamels now. If he returns to pre-09
form, the team will be in good shape.
Rob
This team is a fucking joke.
They could have had Halladay & Lee for 2010, but they cheaped out as
usual. And Lee was a bargain for 2010 at only 9M & for a pitcher of his
caliber, that is cheap.
I mean, this fucking organization couldn't give us ONE year of what its
like to be the Yankees/ Red Sox/ etc etc. So the payroll would have gone
up above budget for one year - so what??? It would ONY have been for one
year, and it would have been such a buzz for the team to have
potentially a season for the ages with that pitching + that hitting -
they could have been a tea, that rivaled the all time MLB record for
wins in a season. It was a unique opportunity that certainly doesn't
come around too often and they took the CHEAP way out.
And look at the Halladay deal - is anybody surprised to find out that
they gave us cash considerations in return?? I'd bet the Phillies
cheapass organozation probably wouldn't even had made the deal unless
cash came back in the deal.
As for the actual Lee trade itself - it was stupid. We got CRAP back in
return, and had the Phillies just kept Lee and lets say they couldn't
resign him next offseason and let him leav via free agency - the
Phillies would have at that point received TWO first round picks in
compensation....so it would have not been a big deal.
Phillies fans should be mad as hell right now for the club not keeping
Lee over a few dollars.
Overall, after ALL of these moves together, I'm not even sure the
Phillies are a better organization (minors included) at the end of all
this player movement than before it. Sure Halladay is a minor upgrade
from Lee, but its not like Halladay really is going to be able to give
you better production than what we saw with Lee last year - Lee was
lights out. And the prospects the Phillies gave were much better than
the garbage they received from Seattle.
Ruben Amaro is a horses ass, and the ownership group are a bunch of
penny pinching, greedy assholes.
That stadium is sold out every fucking game for 81 games, and they can't
go a little abve budget to try for one special year??? Phillies fans
should be mad as hell. I know I am.
> I mean, this fucking organization couldn't give us ONE year of what its
> like to be the Yankees/ Red Sox/ etc etc.
What the hell are you talking about? In 2008 and 2009, the Red Sox
were NOT in the World Series. In those two years, the Yankees were in
the World Series once. The Phillies were in the World Series twice.
So, they ran into a buzzsaw in 09, but they're still the NL Champs. I
believe this organization has already given us TWO years of what you
call "being like the Yankees/Red Sox", and will most likely give us a
few more.
You tell him, Shep.
the Phils have their core plus Halladay, all 30-32 y/o now, locked up for
3 years.
At the very least, the Phils look to dominate the NL East for the next
3-4 years.
rob
Aye. From what I see, things are looking pretty damn rosy.
that said...how in the hell could you miss the point I was trying to
make, unless you are just a shill and didn't want to -
the point was teams like the Yankees & Red Sox have been known to make
those aggressive player acquisitions at times over the past decade or
so, that have put each team in rarified air to where each was the bona
fide clear cut favorite to win the series that upcoming year.
The Phillies had a unique opportunity to put themselves in that
situation this year, but merely going over budget and keeping Lee.
They would have had arguably the best lineup in baseball and alsp the
best rotation.
They could have had a chance to have one of the best records of all time
with that roster. I think it would have been a once in a lifetime chance
for us Phillies fans to be able to witness that kinda season.
And lets face it - Lee at 9 MIl which is what he would have got - is
still a bargain in this market.
But no, they went CHEAP. again.
And don't give me the crap about wanting to get something in return for
Lee while they still could, because had they merely let Lee walk at
seasons end, they would have recouped 2 first rounders, which I know I
would have preferred to get instead of the GARBAGE package of slop we
got in return from Seattle we got for Lee, now.
The Phillies screwed this up, royally.
And all over money, once again,

(sorry, tiny url wasn't working)
This guy is the sleeper in the deal.
And...in 2007, the 1st NL East title of this run, the payroll was 87 mil.
For 2010, the payroll will be 140 mil. Calling the organization cheap is
complete BS on your part. Comparing the Phils, or any other team, to the
Yankees is silly. The NYY can outspend everyone and can afford to eat the
salary of players who don't work out well. Boston only starting spending
in recent years...remember Boggs and Clemens and Damon? They went to the
Yanks for money Boston couldn't afford.
And....Conventional baseball wisdom tells us that the team that gets the
best player, wins the deal. Halladay is the best player in this trade.
Ruben's the man.
Rob
LOL.....
what a suck up.
We've won no rings under Ruben sandwich. Win a ring under his reign of
GM, then come on here saying that crap about him being "the man"
Anyway....I love how you try to slide in there that Halladay is part of
the Lee thing - when it really was 2 separate deals. Yes, we all liked
getting Halladay in here, even though we, unlike Seattle, actually were
made to give up some legit quality top end prospects in Taylor & Drabek
But as much as the Phillies tried to con us into thinking that it was
all part of one deal, it reallu wasn't. Toronto got NOTHING from Seattle
in this deal. The Phillies didn't need anyne but Toronto to make the
deal. The only reason Seattle is even in this is because of the Lee
salary dump. Thats right salary dump.
And your boy Ruben couldn't even get anything of quality back in return
from a pitcher that not only is a former Cy Young winner, but also went
4-0 in the playoffs with a ERA of barely over 1.
Bottom line is, the Phillies most certainly could have kept both Lee and
Halladay for the one year. But the cheapass, greedy ownership group
wouldn't even swallow the one year spike in payroll despite the
potential for a special season. They could have even made up for it with
a salary cut back in 2011 to make up for it if they had to - and guess
what? At that point they would have had enough good will built up that
most of the fans would have been cool with it.
It is an outright travesty that we didn't keep Lee for the 2010 season
at 9 million. all over greed.
And as also said before, they would have still got 2 first rounders
compensation, had they let Lee walk following this season, anyway, so
don't try to snow us with the bullshit that Ruben was trying to recoup
something while he still could for Lee.

First of all, thanks for that looney tunes. I think I watched that one three
times a week as a kid. So this time of year being all nostalgic and such
made me feel just a little bit better, so, yeah, thanks.
As for Lee, well in today's Inky he's quoted as feeling a little down that
he couldn't stay. I think the timing was his agent counter-offered Amaro's
deal, and shortly thereafter was called by Rueben himself to let him know
he's a Mariner. So, it sounded like the GM was weighing both options and had
it in his mind he could only pick one.
Now, after next year, when Lee is a free agent, who knows what the
cheapskate Phillies will do.
I'm not saying the Phillies are cheapskates, just playing a little with ,
err, uh, "Jags fan". Come to think of it, that's a rather suspicious name
for a Phillies fan - ain't it?
It is what it is. I'm excited to see Halladay and sorry to see Lee go.
I'm with Jagsfan this time - you just don't give away a proven pitcher
like Lee for a sack of jelly beans. I like Halladay - he could be the
next Lee for all I know, but Lee was lights-out in the playoffs.
Dan
Amaro has many "bosses" , owners if you will. If anyone's to blame
it's the owners. As I I've said hundred times, this is MLB - that's
Major League Business. No one knows for sure what information Amaro
had. Do you? No.
Sadly, you are right. It's a business, and they made what they
thought was the best business decision. I'll still miss Cliff
Lee, though.

Your welcome. It is my favorite Bugs' 'toon, and I believe Halladay has a
couple of those pitches.
