infielder up here.
On the other hand, Carlos Rodriguez of the Phillies (and Lakewood) is supposed
to be around 20yrs old now (yeah right). He's hitting .222 with zero HR.
When the Phils signed this alleged "17yr old" three years ago I almost fell off my chair
laughing looking at his picture. This "17yr old" had a mustache that would make
Catfish Hunter jealous.
My point is that Dominican's are a waste of money generally and if you are going
to get real talent out of there you will have to outbid the Dodgers and Yanks, and
that's very expensive.
Why not just pay Chris Lubanski and Adam Loewen? We know how old they are.
Bid them up and watch them fall to you. Jeff Francoeur fell to the Phils last year, they
just refused to pick him. Brett McMillan fell to the Phillies in the 20th round but they
refused to pay him and now he's the best hitter on UCLA as a 19yr old freshman.

Well, I'd be shocked if there weren't some pre-draft discussions that
flouted the rules. And certainly agents can make it known
*cough*Borass*cough* that a certain amount will be the minimum bid,
scaring teams off. I doubt, however, that Lubanski or Loewen will fall to
the 86th pick/3rd round, which is where the Phils have their FIRST pick of
the draft. Only a delusional loon would think that would happen.
As for Francoeur, I think mikkkey/randy's point is that they Phils should
have taken him instead of Hamels. They did pick ahead of the Braves.

(such as talking to a prospect's parents). My point is this: how does a
team "bid up" a player? Do they release information to the "news"papers
that they pay $X million over what the anticipated money is? And even then,
how does that team make sure the player "falls to [them]" as MiKKKie
dictates. And what happens when and if (BIG IF) the player falls? Does the
team stick to what it said it would even though the kid fell lower in the
draft.
Basically, my point is MiKKKie's premise is illogical: "bid up" a prospect
so he falls in the draft, but still pay him the "bid up" money even though
he was drafted at a lower position. He would have fallen for a reason:
other teams didn't think he was worth the money being touted, or there were
other players as good or better that should be taken above him.
As far as the Francoeur/Hamels comment, I think MiKKKie doesn't understand
that Hamels was perhaps the better pick with that draft pick. MiKKKie wants
what MiKKKie wants, which is the Phillies to draft EVERYONE. He doesn't
understand the logistics of the draft.
Nor does he understand that hitters tend to be found all over the draft (the
good ones get better as they mature), but quality pitchers are a rarity in
the lower rounds.
Nor does he understand that it takes at least two teams to make a deal.
MiKKKie thinks that if the Philanos want it, the Philanos will get it. He
forgets that other teams have plans and agendas to fulfill.
Nor does he understand that certain prospects have their own plans. Case in
point: Brett McMillan. He signed a letter of intent to play at UCLA,
stated that he WANTED to go to college and forgo the minors (at least for
now), and he's succeeding at the college-level. The Phils drafted him in
the 21st round (not the 20th as Loon states, which, the Great and
Magnificent Loon fails to note, means that the other 29 teams passed on him
more than 550 times!) on the off-chance that he would change his mind while
they held his rights. Would he have gone to the Phils if the Phils offered
him a butt-load of cash? Yeah, probably. But at that time, his talent
didn't justify a higher draft pick and more cash.

mentioned about McMillan in the column:

tough to sign but told the Phillies he wanted to play third base for them."
Ah, sounds like a good ol' PR statement made by any player in any sport that
gets drafted. "I'm really excited about the opportunity to play for Team X.
I can't wait to put on the Team X uniform."
From Paul Hagen's column of the same date, and again, this is EVERYTHING
mentioned about McMillan in the column:
"The Phillies also took a risk by selecting high school third baseman Brett
McMillan in the 21st round. He has a scholarship to UCLA and most teams
expect him to accept it. However, he told the Phillies that the prospect of
an opening at third when Scott Rolen leaves could convince him to turn pro."
Hmmmm.... Sounds like he didn't get MiKKKie's memo that Rolen was never
going to leave. And he forgot to check with MiKKKie about accepting the
college scholarship.
For the record, these were the only two mentions of Brett McMillan in both
the Inquirer and the Daily News from 2000 to today.
