All 30 owners voted to green light the Oakland A's move; ALL THIRTY! What message does this send? To me, it sends the message that there is no loyalty to the communities where these franchises reside. Any team can force city and state governments (and taxpayers) to bend over and take it in the form of public funding for new stadiums or face the prospect that the team pick up and leave...and all of the owners will support it.
In the case of Oakland, the owners voted to continue corporate welfare to John Fisher in the form of revenue sharing in perpetuity due to the decrease in market size. Do any of them really believe that he will suddenly make his team competitive? Of course not. They just want to leave the door open for each of them to have the option to do the same thing he has done.
MLB gives lip service to the notion of tradition and diversity, yet has given approval to move one of the league's oldest franchises out of the bay area (one of the most diverse areas in the nation). Why? So each owner can tuck the "relocation card" away in their pocket to use whenever they need to strong arm local and state officials into doing their bidding.
Pundits and others can say that Oakland didn't do enough to keep the team. There's no need to rehash all of the lies. The documentation is available. Oakland's mayor provided copies to each owner detailing the efforts made (above and beyond) what Fisher said he wanted.
All the owners did today was further weaken an already weak pastime. No amount of slick rule changes and marketing ploys can cover up the fact that owners don't give a damn.
