Dodger Fan Killed

baiting a drunk Giant fan. I've seen it a million times at Dodger Stadium.
Since I always seat in field box, 1st base side. As you move toward the foul
pole the more drunk and brazen the dodger fans get. It's usually heavily
Latino and when they're drunk, they can't stop their yakkers.
AND the dodgers were just bitch-slapped again by the Giants. It's been
happening year after year after year. I bet the dodger fan just couldn't
stand it anymore. I bet he started his digs inside the stadium and it
spilled unto the parking lot. Either that or the Giants' fan (s) were
ambushed in the parking lot. I've seen it happen dozen of times. While we're
all saddened and sick about this, the rivalry thing is just outta control
among sports fan base. People learn it in every high school across the
country - to hate and beat the rival school at any cost. It transcends as
they grow older.
AND bring booze into the equation and it's a recipe for trouble.
The Ricky-O Clan will be retiring as of today. No more posts. No more
banter. The RO clan will miss regular run-ins with Sam, AG, WP1, etc, and
will always remember this group with a smile. Why retire? Because of the
horrible nature of sports fans these days. It's over.
The RO Clan hearby is adios and returns the Presidential baton to Sam Monk.
Sam is the man, knows his baseball and really knows his Dodgers. I wish we
could send him a tix to Dodger Stadium but someone stole the funds :)
VP will continue to be AG
The rest of official offices will be held and fought-over via local dodger
newsgroup voting.

doesn't matter. you don't think i get baited all the time? i used to
show up to dodger stadium wearing my barry bonds jersey, SF Giants cap,
etc. i'd make a ton of friends who are giants fans and i get a lot of
yelling from dodger fans. sure, some are very hostile and there have been
a lot of times when incidents escalated and almost got very physical. but
i've never been tempted to shoot anybody (not that i would take a gun to a
ballgame anyway).

well, i've had problems with latinos, whites, etc. but race doesn't
really matter. in my limited experience, i had a lot of trouble with
young latino guys (who are also raider fans)....but hey, it's probably
more alcohol than anything else. i got into it once with a white cowboy
looking guy with a cowboy hat who kept throwing peanuts at me. he would
look away every time i looked back so i walked up to him and told him he
was a p*ssy and he got scared. dude was like 6'5 with 2 of his high
school age sons but he was a big wimp when it actually came down to
confrontation.

anyway, there's no excuse for this type of behavior and it's tragic.
these days? i just show up with a giants cap. my wife doesn't like it
when i get into arguments at the ball park.

the press has got it.
I've lived in the U.K. for years, and we certainly DON'T want attending pro
sports like it is over here, at least for soccer matches. Here the police
congratulate themselves if there's only one murder after a match. The area
around the soccer gronds, both before and after a match, is full of drunken
fans with police trying to keep them from brawling - they even have
different routes fans of different teams have to take into the grounds, and
are sat in different areas, so they won't come in contact with each other.
Like I say, we certainly don't want that sort of situation with MLB...

Okay, fair cop, that bit about "only one murder" was a bit of hyperbole
which is not to be taken seriously.
However, the rest of the words are true. In fact, hooliganism is on the
increase, after years of feeling guilty (and police crackdown) after Heysel.
The differences between the British and American sporting experience have
always intrigued me. I've always put it down to the class system - like,
could you imagine cricket hooligans? The working classes need some sort of
outlet usually denied them in the rest of their lives - alcohol and violence
fulfill that need.
There have always been American excesses and deplorable fan behavior -
anyone remember 10 cent beer night at Comiskey? And more recently, the
attacks on coach Gamboa? But the fact that you can name the incidents shows
it's the exception rather than the rule. I just want to keep it the
exception.
A sad thing about this is that San Franciscans always think of themselves as
from the "Peace and Love" city, a kindler, gentler town than brass,
agressive Los Angeles. This kind of thing was not meant to happen. Plus,
Giants fans have reason to be happy, not angry. It's the Dodger fans that
would be angry. I don't understand. What's the story?

You're assuming that because the gunman was a Giants fan, that he's from
San Francisco?
As someone else said, this isn't about Dodgers fans and Giants fans.
It's about some psychopath who packed heat and used it.
Then again, there are plenty of Type A, self-absorbed, overaggressive
twits living in San Francisco. The city of peace & love this ain't

Not true. Arrests are on the increase, but only becaus ethe police
have a lower tolerance threshold these days.
Actual violence within the stadia is virtually nil. However, for
whatever reason [probably that it gets them a biogger budget] police
forces tend to class any arrest within a certain distance of a
football ground on a match day as "football-related".
