FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. - The results from an MRI revealed a
tear in the right hamstring of outfielder Jason Repko, meaning he will
more than likely need surgery and could be lost to the team for several
months.
"It's not good," Dodgers manager Grady Little said. "He's going to miss
a lot of time."
The Dodgers are seeking a second opinion on the severity of Repko's
injury but aren't expecting the news to improve.
Repko injured himself Thursday while chasing a fly ball that was hit into
the left-center-field gap at Holman Stadium. He planted his right foot on
the outfield grass while trying to stop but his left foot landed on the warning
track, which has a gravel surface.
"My left foot planted on the warning track," Repko said. "I think it kind of
gave way and that's what kind of caused it."
Repko was returning from a 10-day layoff after straining his right groin muscle.
The groin injury initially was thought to be more serious but Repko returned to
game action on Wednesday. He was hoping for similar news, especially since
he walked off the field after getting hurt and was able to stand at his locker
later that day.
"They (the trainers) said that they've seen people think they pulled it bad and
then it not be so bad," he said. "And they've seen people not pull it too bad
but then it ends up being bad."
Repko missed 67 games last season because of a high-ankle sprain and was
planning on having a comeback type of season. He was batting .333 in 11
games this spring.

the curse strikes again. I probably just need to stop having a favorite
dodger.

Or at least try not to choose a player who has been injury prone his
entire career. The reason he got moved from shortstop was that the
Dodgers decided his body couldn't take it, after all. Pity - if he
played shortstop Furcal wouldn't have been injured, and Repko would
likely be healthy also.

My favorites get traded, yours get hurt. Personally, I'm hoping the bat boy
has a great year.
it's about 50-50. sometimes, they are even traded *when* they are injured.

An update on his injury
"Repko has two torn tendons in his hamstring close to the pelvis and
will be sidelined for at least five months. Dr. Neal El Attrache will
perform surgery Wednesday in L.A. to reattach the tendons.
"The prognosis is good, the time frame is bad," Conte said. "This
requires the tendon to be regrown back on the bone. So essentially, he
will miss the season.""
Ouch. It's basically a serious football type injury.
In other news, from the article, it looks like Bigbie will make the
team over Loney, thanks to a hot spring. Of course, Bigbie in 6 full
or partial seasons in the majors has hit solidly for an outfielder
exactly once - as a carefully used backup four years ago. Loney hit
better than Bigbie ever has last season, his only in the majors.
Idiocy.
And then Colletti goes and gets Brady Clark.
Rich
Clark makes some sense, at least - they wanted to get something for
Dessens. They wanted a right handed hitting outfielder who can handle
all three positions (especially centerfield) well. Loney and Bigbie
both hit left handed. There's no way Loney plays center, and while
Bigbie has played it - he's not really somebody you want to play
there. But the only thing that that Bigbie brings to the team now
(that Loney couldn't) is being the third string centerfielder. OTOH,
Loney has nothing else to prove in the minors, is already a better
hitter than Bigbie (and likely to be much better than Bigbie at his
best), and Loney is they guy who should be getting the starts at first
whenever Nomar isn't there - and the Dodgers are supposedly planning
to give Nomar frequent days off.
Well, I guess Bigbie does bring his "veteran presence" - to a team
loaded with veterans. And FWIW, excepting the 17 games he played with
the Cards last year he's never played on a major league team that was
even mediocre - so you really can't give him the totemistic label of a
winner even.
At least the Dodgers have a great backup corps. If Little can make this
team win, then let it roll!

I am honestly not against this. Loney is going to play every day at first
base in the minors which is what he should be doing. He is going to get
called up probably by mid season. I don't see any point in rushing players
unnecessarily.
AG
Just another colletti move I hate. I hope they don't screw around with
Loney's swing to try to get more power out of it and I wish they'd
quit jacking him around. Yeah he gets to play everyday at Vegas, big
deal. He needs to see ML pitching, he's already showed he can hit in
the minors lets see if that translates to the show on a consistant
level.
He's not being rushed. He led the minors (and majors, for that
matter) in batting average last season. He hit increasingly well in
his three callups last year, until in September he was an important
part of the team making the playoffs (and hit well in the one game
Little had him play against the Mets). He's torn the cover off the
ball this spring training. At some point you have to let kids hit
against major league pitching, not send them to the minors in favor of
career mediocrities who have a hot spring.
It's Bigbie's and Valdez's job to lose, not Loney's. Should Loney not make
the Opening Day roster, let it be and hope the team does well.
He may not even get enough playing time anyway with Nomar at first and
Gonzo, Ethier and Pierre taking up most of the time. As long as Loney
continues to play fantastic ball, he'll be a stud in the MLB for years to
come, barring injury.
Which is what I'm bitching about. There's no good reason for them to
be valued in front of Loney. It's not like they're returning Dodgers
- Loney is. It's not like they were as good as Loney was LAST season
- they weren't. They are mediocrities, useful for filling a bench if
you don't have a better option. But Loney is the better option. If
Loney isn't considered better than Bigbie, then it becomes clearer
that the Dodgers' new plan is to throw money and recycled vets at the
problems they face, not take advantage of the minor league quality
they have. But good teams build their cores from the minors - and
they give prospects shots, and not just as a last resort.
> Should Loney not make
>the Opening Day roster, let it be and hope the team does well.
Ah, so we shouldn't actually discuss the merits of the Dodgers moves,
just rah rah whatever move they make.
I don't think so.
>
>He may not even get enough playing time anyway with Nomar at first and

So what's better - not getting as much playing time as would be ideal
in the majors, or getting even less playing time waiting for the right
injury to happen?
> As long as Loney
>continues to play fantastic ball, he'll be a stud in the MLB for years to

And burying him behind a career mediocrity like Bigbie helps this to
happen how, exactly?
>
Loney has nothing to prove in the minors. The Dodgers have plenty to prove
in the thinking department. With Grady at the helm there is no reason for
high expectations. Nomar should be at 3rd base. He was a good shortstop
before his injuries, he is used to that side of the infield, and without
constantly stretching for throws leg injuries (groin, etc.) should be less
likely. I much prefer Nomar at 3rd and Loney at first to any of the guys
they have at 3rd (including Betamit) and Nomar at first.

I wouldn't say he was a good (defensive) shortstop. He was decent.
But I agree with you that the injury worries just don't seem to fly,
as regards third base vs first base.
And once none of the third base candidates played decently in spring
training, while Loney was dynamite, the Dodgers should have moved
Nomar to third and let Loney have first, with Betemit getting some
time in the outfield so he could be a supersub for the Dodgers - since
despite the claims at the time of the trade that he was better than
Aybar defensively that doesn't seem to be true, and it's still not
clear that he's more than a platoon starter. A team with Nomar,
Furcal, Kent and Loney as starters in the infield is going to be one
of the best hitting infields in the league, and respectable
defensively. Martin should be above average offensively and
defensively behind the plate - so the weak outfield could be carried,
especially with the likely improvement in the rotation.
Wow, I completely agree, go figure. ; ^) Actually it's not the first
time. The only thing I might say differently is that the D I think
wouldn't just be respectable it'd be average to a little above. It's a
move I can't understand other than trying to get something for
Dessens. Colletti seems to favor any vet over giving a kid a shot, so
short sided.
Your points are good, but I just want to enjoy watching Dodger ball without
hoping 2 or 3 guys go down so Loney gets a chance to play more frequently.
If Loney is really that good, it really doesn't make any sense to put Bigbie
in the roster before him.
As for Valdez, he might be a good asset at 3rd otherwise Loney should be a
shoo-in if Nomar were the regular 3rd baseman.
How did Loney even look, in spite of his numbers during Spring Training?
Like a Vet?
Many of the young guys and invitees tend push harder and play better in
order to make the team, but then again Loney looked very good last year.
