We moved from southern California to Oregon when I was 14. I
attended a few Dodgers games when we lived in southern California, but
since we moved to Oregon I've only been able to see LA play on TV or
listen to night home games on the radio.
I finally got to see the Dodgers game live when they traveled to
Seattle to play the Mariners.
I caught the train in Eugene, OR. at 6:10 a.m. on June 14. Several
other people who were traveling to the game were also there. At each
stop (stops included Salem, Portland and a few Washington cities/towns),
more people heading to the game boarded. The train was filled with
people wearing Mariners or Dodgers apparel.
The train arrived in Seattle 10 minutes before the game started.
Fortunately, the train station is next to the stadium.
Even though the Dodgers lost (9-8), the game was great. Players on
both teams hit home runs. Fans who were rooting for the Mariners said
they liked Mike Piazza and were impressed with his performance.
The Mariners took the lead early and the Dodgers spent most of the
game trying to catch up.
Ramon Martinez didn't pitch well. Bill Russell should have pulled
him from the game sooner. Russell replaced Martinez with Scott Radinsky,
who doesn't pitch well and should be traded.
Brett Butler tied the game 8-8 with a sacrifice bunt in the 8th
inning. I thought using Butler as the DH was a mistake. He was near the
bottom of L.A.'s lineup and had weak hitters behind him. The team should
put stronger hitters behind the players who are capable of reaching
first base often.
Jay Buhner hit a home run in the bottom of the 9th to end the game.
The train was scheduled to leave Seattle and travel south at 5:10
p.m. I'm not sure if the train would have waited if the game had gone
into extra innings. While I was disappointed that the Dodgers lost, I'm
glad the game didn't go into extra innings.
