It appears that Detroit sports Usenet groups stalwart SkippyPB has
passed away.

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/ohio/obituary.aspx?pid=175103349

With the arrival of the Pistons draft with no comment from him, I
wondered if something had happened, and I noticed there were no new
posts from him the Tigers group.

I knew him mostly from the Pistons and Lions groups and he was always a
passionate fan, but knowledgable and realistic about the trials and
travails of following Detroit sports.

I knew practically nothing about him offline, but it turns out he was a
serious environmentalist and a hero in Vietnam, earning three bronze
stars in the infantry.

Googling his history a little bit, I turned up this gem:

Oh my! In October of 1968 I was a 20 year old stomping
around the jungles of Vietnam and reading in 1 to 2 week
old Stars and Stripes newspaper about the Tigers. A
fellow soldier was from Lincoln Park and we would read
the sports section together. When the Tigers won,
it was the only good thing I can say happened (at least
to me) in 1968.

He'll be missed.

I'm not so sure. There have been posts from him after June 14.
In fact there was one yesterday in regards to Arnie Kander leaving the
Pistons.

He'd mentioned within the past year needing to check into the hospital for
something, I don't think he said what the issue was.

The guy was one serious fan -- I can't even guess how many game recaps he
posted over the years, but you think about the number of games the Tigers,
Pistons and Lions played, it's pretty amazing. But he never got foaming at
the mouth about it, although he did have fun needling Anita Darling about
his/her insane Bill Laimbeer and Allen Iverson obsessions -- maybe
surviving the infantry in Vietnam showed him that sports are never a life
and death matter.

If he did missed it. I never read the Lions group so perhaps it was
there.

I never gave it much thought why but towards the end he posted
series recaps rather than by the games. He literally was here up to
the end. His last post was 6/13/05 to my comment about the continued
starting of Green. Said comment in that regard was insanity was doing
the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Someone in another group mentioned that he had Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disease. There's been a fairly substantial link between that and
Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange. I don't know if that happened to
him, but if it did it's a shame, and probably was a reason why he became an
environmentalist.

I'd assume that would be a good guess. In away posting to these
groups you become friends of a sort. Long time posters disappear and
you wonder why. I just never considered death to be consider to be one
of the reasons. I'm sure as I watch Tigers games I think of Skippy.

I've been coming to these groups since I first got on the internet in
1996. It's is part of my daily routine. Slowly they have faded away.
Ironically the groups that he loved so much with his death will die
too.
