Major League Baseball Playoff Tiebreaker Info (1999)

1.. When there is a tie for a Division Championship and the breaking of
the tie will result in the losing team nonetheless being the Wild Card team,
the Division Champion shall be:
a.. a. the team with the better record in head-to-head competition, or
in the event the teams have the same record in head-to-head competition,
b.. b. the team with the better record, based on winning percentage in
intradivisional competition, or, in the event the two teams have the same
intradivisional winning percentages,
c.. c. the team with the better record in League competition over the
last 81 games played by each team, or, in the event the two teams have the
same records over this period,
d.. d. the team with the better record in League competition over the
last 82 games, provided that the 82nd game was not a game between the tied
teams.

When there is a tie for a Division Championship and the breaking of that tie
will result in the losing team(s) not being the Wild Card team, the tie for
the Division Championship shall be broken as follows:
a.. a. Tie between two teams. The League President shall conduct a coin
flip to determine the site of a playoff game between the two teams, the game
to be played the day after the conclusion of the championship season. The
winner of the game shall be declared the Division Champion.
b.. b. Tie among three teams. If the tied teams have identical records
against each other, the League President shall supervise a draw which
results in the tied teams being designated the A, B and C teams. A will play
B at the home field of A, the day after the conclusion of the championship
season. The following day, C will play the winner of A-B at the winner's
home field. The winner of the game shall be declared the Division Champion.
When, however, the tied teams do not have identical records against each
other, their designation as the A, B, or C teams shall be determined as
follows:
1.. Team 1 has better record against both Team 2 and Team 3, and Team 2
has better record against Team 3: Team 1 chooses designation as A, B or C
team, and Team 2 chooses from remaining choices;
2.. Team 1 has better record against both Team 2 and Team 3, and Team 2
and Team 3 have same record against each other: Team 1 chooses designation
as A, B or C team and League President supervises draw between Teams 2 and 3
for remaining choices;
3.. Team 1 and Team 2 have same record against each other but better
record against Team 3: League President supervises draw between Teams 1 and
2. Winner chooses designation as A, B or C team and loser chooses from
remaining choices;
4.. Team 1 has better record against Team 2, Team 2 has better record
against Team 3, and Team 3 has better record against Team 1: Rank teams on
the basis of overall winning percentage within the three-team group; team(s)
with higher percentages select designation as A, B or C teams(s); when two
or more teams tied in overall winning percentage, League President
supervises draw between teams so tied.

Hoping they can do even that. Although the schedule lightens up in

Well the next 40 games may prove to be very critical for the tigers
who's bats have
seemed to have gone south as of late.

You have to take in consideration that those 19 games against teams out
of
contention are not a given by any means.

Futher it would indicate by their record
that the tigers are a better team on the road than at home,so there is
not much of
an edge there at all.

Any of those teams who the tigers punished early on in the season, would
love nothing better than to spoil or
make it rough for them to win the
division or the wild card.

I think it is pretty much a given that players on those sub par teams
seem
to "some how" turn it up a notch or
three.hoping to get noticed for future
bigger pay days in another uni.

It is still painful for me to remember
87,when with 7 games left to play in
the season the jays with a sterling
374 era much like the current tigers.

Only needed to win one of those
7 games to clinch or at least tie for
the al east division title.

Finishing 96-66,close to what I anticipate
the tigers to do this year.(alas no wc then)

Four of those games where decided by
one run and none by over two.The last
a 1-0 game with the tigers.
Scoring only 16 runs in those 7 games.

And just days before they had set an al
record by hitting 10 hr's in one game
mashing the o's 18-3.

Hope their bats get it turned up.

Just as a side note both the tigers and the
jays had a payroll of around 13 mill that
year,my how times change.
While the yanks paid out over 18 mill
for a 4th place finish.;.>)

Just an observation no flame intended.

2 hits. They lost giving up just 2 hits. Should they lose the division by
one game, take your pick of either of these last two Saturdays.

It's not impossible although the question remains; what then has to be the
Tiger's rate of success (or failure)?

well, with 35 wins, the Tigers could not lose the division, as of this
moment. That is based on the possibility of the W Sox winning all 40 of
their remaining games. Should that happne, it would mean that the Tigers
could not lose a game to anyone else but the W Sox, since 4 of their
remaining 39 are against the W Sox.
The real answer is, it cannot yet be determined.

Actually, the W Sox elimination number (combination of their losses and
Tiger's wins) is 35. Twins' number is 33. The Royals should be eliminated
this week, as they are only 4 games away. Cleveland is only 17 games away
from elimination.

Amen. Two got across on an error, but Nate did walk them. Notice
Santiago up from Toledo replacing Infante late. Hope they're not
depending on it.

It was 3 hits but Robertson only gave up 2 hits to the Teixeira! And
the loss of Polanco playing at second raised its ugly head as Infante
made an error that led to 2 unearned runs. And once again we get guys
on base in the 8th and 9th but can't bring them home. Someone tossed
ice water on the Tiger bats (except for many Monroe's).

Bonderman up today. Three extremely well pitched games with no
decision for Jeremy. He's due. Let's hope the Tiger hitters find
their stride again.

Don't forget about the Twins.

Right after the All Star break I looked at the schedule and figured if
the Tigers played .500 ball the rest of the way and jokingly told my
friends that all the Twins would have to do is play solid .700 baseball
to catch them. Well, they've played .730 since then and are now 6 1/2
games back of the Tigers. It wasn't a joke.

There is a four game series with the Twins looming Sept. 7-10 at the
MetroDump. It could be crucial.

Well you may get your wish, BK Lounge. You and the rest of this NG
were endeared to the Casey trade. Well let's set the record straight.

Tigers with Shelton: 70-34
Tigers without Shelton: 9-11

Messing with chemistry? Well now you may just have your .500 team.

My bad! I thought Hariston had gotten a hit late in the game. Not
true.
