We probably won't see any of these guys in Comerica for some years
but, if they stick, it is nice to know there is some talent in the
wings.
First pick for the Tigers and 22nd in the draft was a Texas high
school pitcher by the name of Beau Burrows. He's a right hander who
was ranked 30 in the top 200 by MLB. Burrows has committed to Texas
A&M University, but the Tigers have a track record of convincing top
high school draft picks to sign, having done so with Rick Porcello,
Jacob Turner, Nick Castellanos, Jake Thompson and Derek Hill in recent
years.
Next with the No. 34 overall pick of the Draft, the Tigers opted for a
left-handed hitter whose strengths at the plate could overshadow
average defense. Better defense can be taught. Christian Stewart,
who ranks 66th on MLB.com's list of Top 200 Draft prospects, hit .311
with 15 home runs as a junior at the University of Tennessee this
year.
With their 1st pick in the 2nd round, the Tigers took left handed
pitcher Tyler Alexander, whom they took with the 65th overall pick.
Two years after the Tigers drafted Alexander out of high school, they
went back to the southpaw as a Draft-eligible sophomore. Alexander
was a 23rd-round pick of the Tigers in 2013, but opted for college
ball. He doesn't look like a starter at the MLB level. Rather he
would be groomed as a reliever.
The draft continues Tuesday with rounds 3-10.
Regards,
