There was NO reason for Narron to take Coffey out in the eighth. He
had faced just five batters, thrown only 17 pitches, there was nobody
on base, and Everett is 1-for-4 with 2 strikeouts against Coffey for
his career. So naturally, Narron brings in Stanton. There goes another
game the Reds probably win if they have a competent manager.

I can't wait until this idiot leaves the team to go to his daughter's
graduation so that Bucky Dent can take over and they can see what the
team can accomplish in the eighth inning when they're not getting
their throats cut by their own manager. Maybe then something will get
done about it.

I am beginning to believe that the Reds will never make the playoffs
while Narron is the manager.

Yeah, I changed the channel briefly, came back with Stanton pitching
and runners on 1st & 2nd... turned it off at that point.

Well, there have been others, including some of the regulars in this
NG, who have reached the same conclusion before based on other
considerations. In some cases I just haven't been in agreement that
what was perceived as an issue even was or is an issue. In other
cases, I've felt the issues being raised were genuine concerns, but
were pretty much minor issues. So, I really haven't been among
Narron's major detractors so far.

This thing with the pen, though, is different. It's not a little
thing, it's a big thing, and Narron isn't showing any signs that he
might be on the verge of catching on.

There's much more to managing a baseball team than just pushing the
right buttons during a game, but no matter how good you are with the
other stuff, you still have to push the right !#$%^&* buttons.

I'd even argue that taking Milton out after 5 was stupid. He had thrown 69
pitches.

The thing with the pen is an ORGANIZATIONAL problem. It's one thing when you
give away a run here and there by bunting or you want a fast left handed
centerfielder as the last guy on your bench. The organization has put
tremendous amounts of energy and resources into aquiring bullpen arms.
Hammond/Coffey/Weathers/Merker all got hurt last year on top of what
happened to Eddie and Majewski. He's on pace to do the same thing with this
years crop of guys.

As it stands right now, they have so many middling relief guys that it isn't
a terrible organizational problem, but the next step is to focus on
increasing the quality of the arms in the pen and they CAN'T do that with
this usage pattern.

yup.I've pointed out many of Narron's strength, but this one point could
well keep him from putting together a winning season.

And don't forget The Lizard. Yeah, he mainly started, but it was likely a
relief appearance that did him in.

I still think some of his bunts are more stupid on a very basic level than
even the bullpen usage, but the pen overuse is certainly a bigger issue
where total wins and losses are concerned.
