From the Enquirer:

It'll get worse unless the starters become more durable. If they
don't, the relief corps will fray. Boone called the next two weeks
“critical” to the staff. But he admitted that the Reds currently have no
potential replacements for the current starters, except for long reliever
Jim Brower.

To which I'd only add:

It's been 12 days since Scott Winchester was sent back to AAA, meaning
he's eligible to be recalled (and thus Brower could start, or Scott
could).

Larry Luebbers: 2-3, 3.79 ERA, 1 shutout at Louisville
Chris Peters: 1-0, 4.73 ERA in 3 starts at Louisville
Frankie Rodriguez: 7-4, 5 saves, 2.36 ERA in 28 relief appearances at
Louisville (former starting pitcher)

Those three guys have major league experience, as well, and wouldn't be
"ruined" by pitching in the majors before they're ready.

Jared Fernandez 5-4, 4.38 ERA at Louisville.

If anyone can help save the bullpen's arms it's a knuckleballer.

But is Scott able to start? Are the Reds willing to risk his
arm? [Of course, are they willing to actually keep him on the damb
roster?]

You're coming around, Kevin. =)

Either would be fine, although you'd have to stretch Frankie
out some first.

Dunno, but I figured Winchester's recall solidified their ability to start
Brower (which I wouldn't be that gung-ho about...he's done a very nice job
as the long guy, much to our surprise) more than it would allow Scott to
start (just threw it in because he has experience doing so, too).

No, not really. Larry would in all likelihood suck, but I'd rather have a
minor league/occasional major league vet taking the poundings than the
kids on their way up (hopefully).

A little. It looks like he goes at least a couple of innings usually (I
believe he had 53.1 innings over those 28 appearances). Of course, if he
pitched only five that'd be longer than most of the kids have gone lately.

One thing I *didn't* consider with my original post is the 40 man roster
factor. I don't know how many, if any, of the above guys are on the 40
man. So, who do we risk losing to activate them (hint: Osvaldo's not
faring much better at Louisville)?

At anyrate, there *are* other options, Mr. Boone.

I'd submit this idea: that this season is devolving into an extended try out
camp.

The Reds current pattern of promotions/demotions of pitchers, and the using
of raw AAA/AA pitchers vs. those with some big league experience, is an
attempt by the management to see who has big league potential, and probably
more important, seeing who is or isn't able or willing to take advice from
the coaching staff.

I suspect that may have been what did in Bell with this team. Gullet is an
excellent pitching coach........to those who are willing to listen to him.

I think players like Leubbers are being left down because the team has
decided has fate one way of the other, and now they want to get a look at
other pitchers in the system who look promising but haven't seen major league
batters. Again, this team won't be paying out big $$$ until the stadium is
finished, and I think they want to get a gauge on which of the young pitchers
will be hitting on all cylinders by then, and which ones can be released or
traded. After which, the new stadium Reds can go after veterans as needed.

Unfortunately, if this is all true, it means that the team threw in the towel
back in May for this season, and you will probably see this carousel going on
for the rest of the year.

Oh. Well, okay.

One would hope so. I'd rather see some of these rooks piling
up time in the 'pen, leaving the vet scrubs to get shellacked in the
rotation. It's not like the kids wouldn't be getting regular work...

And he'd also give guys room to move into the rotation.

Who knows. Of course, two spots are tied up with Sardinha and
Espinosa, which bothers me...

Yep.

Maybe...although I don't know that I'd listen to Bob Boone. I
would listen to Gully, though.

Maybe so.
