Melky & a couple of prospects for Ted Lilly.
In theory, the Cubs wanna dump Lilly's contract.
Dumpster's name has been mentioned, too.
The old geezer
That may be wishful thinking on the part of Yankee fans. I don't see how
the Cubs would be benefitted by Lilly for Melkey or Dempster for Melkey.
Their strength still is their starting pitching (once Lilly returns),
despite the question mark for the fifth starter. Take out Dempster and
Lilly, and you have question marks at two spots---plus not knowing if Wells
was a one-year wonder or if Zambrano can keep his head from exploding.
The New York Post reported yesterday that the Yankees had contacted
the Cubs about acquiring Zambrano, not Lilly, but that the asking
price was too high. Zambrano's agent denied thar Z had been asked to
waive his no-trade clause.
This is but one of several rumors about the Yankees acquiring a
starting pitcher.
To follow up, the Yankees acquired Javier Vasquezand Boone Logan from
the Braves for Melky Cabrera,Mike Dunn and Arodys Vizcaino, ending
any interest the Yankees (or for that matter the CUbs) might had in a
Zambrano for Cabrera swap

Lilly has been one of (if not only) consistent pitchers the Cubs have.
Last year he made $13M. I don't know what his contract says for this
year but as far as pitchers go, he seems like a good deal. Pitching is
so critical to the success of a team and in general finding good pitchers
is such a crap shoot IMHO, it would be idiotic to let Lilly go.
Dempster's salary last year was $9M and although he had a down year last
year, his ERA was still well below 4 and he seems to have upside
potential if he can get back to his 2008 level. Much of his poor
performance win-wize last year had to do with the poor performance of the
team in general.
So the bottom line, I wouldn't mess with this pitching staff -- it's all
the Cubs have to give us hope for next year. Finding decent pitchers is
so difficult which is why the Yankees are trying to harvest from the
Cubs. If Zambrano/Lilly/Dempster have a hot season next year, the Cubs
will do well. If the Cubs end up with a bunch of schlock pitchers, the
Cubs won't do well no matter who they have in the line up.
