Dusty in Danger in Cincy?

Rumors are coming out of the Queen City that Dusty Baker might be in
jeopardy. Some people are speculating that Walt Jocketty might hire Tona
LaRussa and Dave Duncan as their contracts have expired with the Cards. I
wouldn't mind seeing the Cubs go after Duncan, but I suppose Rothschild is
safe at this point.

As much as I like Lou, I'd like to see the Cubs go after LaRussa and sign
him to a four year contract. I also heard rumors that LaRussa might end
up back with the White Sox. Apparently him and Reinsdorf are very good
friends and Ozzie Guillen is on thin ice right now.

I don't believe La Russa would be interested in a long-term contract. He's
65 now and seems to like to decide year to year whether he wants to continue
managing.

If this is true the Cubs should be doing everything possible to sign
LaRussa
and Duncan.

I wouldn't be opposed to hiring Duncan. I'm not sure about Tony LaRussa. I
don't suppose Larry Rothschild is going anywhere anyway. The Cubs' staff did
have a pretty good season despite a number of injuries (Dempster, Lilly,
Zambrano) and a couple of flameouts (Gregg for one). I just hate that it
seems like the Cubs' starters don't go very deep in the games and some of
that may be because our pitchers nibble at the edges of the zone rather than
going right after the hitter. This drives their pitch counts up and
effectively limits how many innings they can pitch.

Of course, the worst guy at that seemed to be Prior (it seemed like he
constantly would be up 0-2 or 1-2 and next thing you knew it was a full
count) and he hasn't even been with the Cubs for a couple of seasons.
Perhaps my perspective or recollections are inaccurate.
