Jaramillo has been fired.

I don't think it has anything to do with finding a scape goat for the
Cubs poor showing. I believe it had more to do with the FO and Sveum not
wanting him to be teaching the young Cubs that will soon be part of the
ML roster.

Jaramillo wasn't a guy to preach patience...He wanted his players to be
aggressive and wasn't a big fan of working the count. Theo and Co. are
advocates of patience...Waiting for your pitch...Run up pitch counts
which impact later in the game.

I wondered how long Jaramillo would be a part of the new organization,
since he was a carryover from the previous administration.

The new guy is James Rawson, currently the minor league instructor...I'm
sure Rizzo, Jackson and the like are familiar with Rawson's teaching
methods.

Good move which probably won't impact anything in the immediate future
but is, I believe, part of the overall strategy that Epstein wants
implemented.

From the Trib article:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/breaking/chi-cubs-fire-jaramillo-
20120612,0,2670982.story

"Jaramillo was in the final year of a three-year deal signed before the
2010 season."

So, in other words, here's what probably really happened. Tom Ricketts
thought he could get an extra year out of his hitting coach. No need to
pay a salary for the guy you fired and the guy you hired. Epstein was
probably too busy to have to make a call on that this year anyway. The
Cubs flounder. The marketing department needs nuggets for the news to
obscure the current W/L record.

Answer #1: Outbid the Yankees on some 19 year old prospect and call it
-- The Cubs beat the Yankees.
Answer #2: Throw the hitting coach we were going to replace anyway after
this season under the bus and call it -- we have identified the hitting
problem.
Result: Bring back some of the millions of discouraged faithful and get
them to regularly attend mass at their place of worship, Wrigley Field.

In the vernacular of some circles this is commonly known as painting
lipstick on a pig.

I don't agree that signing Soler was a PR move. This is the last year, at
least until a court challenge, that teams could spend high sums on
international free agents. I think after July 1 that teams are limited to
$2.75 million total. The Cubans who made themselves available this spring
got the windfall of the last big spending spree.

On the other hand, I do agree with the analysis of Jaramillo. He really
should have been dismissed before the season and the firing now is
definitely a move to placate the faithful. I didn't like the hire from the
get-go (too much money and the PED taint from Texas) and his philosophy is
diametrically opposed to what Theo and Jed believe in. On the other hand,
how much can you change a batter's approach to an at bat once he has reached
the Major League level? I sure hope someone can teach Castro and Barney some
patience, but I don't expect dramatic changes.

Personally, I think the Cubs might have to look at dumping Sveum fairly soon
as well. The team doesn't appear to play all that hard for him and some of
his recent comments about signing free agents this off-season appear
self-serving at best.

I glad you mentioned Sveum, I'm finding him to be more and more
entertaining as time goes by. First it was Marmol, then Castro and now
he's throwing barbs at Theo.

"There’s obviously going to be some guys available this winter and
you’ve got to sit down and decide what the plan is."

So on the one hand we have Theo, the genius who is going to turn the
organization around and lead us to the promised land. On the other
hand you have Theo's hand picked manager saying that the organization
needs to decide what the plan is.

You would think that not winning a world series for 100+ years would
be as bad as it gets... but then again, I guess you never know.
