From the Boston Globe today.

Hope all Cubs fans are happy...

A wrongheaded righty

By Dan Shaughnessy, Globe Columnist, 06/02/99

The baseball draft is today. Shame on Boston if it uses any of its
picks to select Wichita State righthander Ben Christensen. As far as I'm
concerned, Christensen is the Christian Peter of this year's baseball
draft.

It's doubtful you've heard of Christensen. He's touted as a high-round
pick even though he hasn't pitched since April 23,
when he intentionally threw a ball at the head of Evansville's Anthony
Molina before Molina had even come to bat.

Here's the scene: Christensen, a junior with a 21-1 career record, was
warming up for his start when he thought he detected
Molina trying to time his pitches from a spot about halfway between the
visitor's dugout and the on-deck circle. In accordance
with lessons taught by his coach, Gene Stephenson, and pitching coach,
Brent Kemnitz, Christensen believed this perceived
infraction of baseball etiquette gave him the right to throw at Molina.

Christensen told the Wichita Eagle, ''If the on-deck hitter is standing
too close to home plate, you brush him back.''

Molina was standing about 30 feet to the side of home plate, not looking
at the pitcher, when Christensen drilled him in the
head. The ball struck Molina in his left eye, fracturing the socket in
three places and opening a 1-inch gash that took 23
stitches to close.

Christensen was immediately thrown out of the game, while Molina was
rushed to Wichita's Wesley Medical Center. A week
later, the Missouri Valley Conference suspended the pitcher and the
pitching coach for the rest of the season. Christensen
hired an attorney to contest the suspension, but the penalty was upheld
by the NCAA.

Molina, a junior catcher with no pro potential, will need laser surgery
on a left eye in which his vision was reduced from
20/10 to 20/160. As a result of the ''purpose pitch,'' he is legally
blind in that eye. He filed assault charges against
Christensen, but they were dismissed by nitwit local officials, making me
wonder exactly what constitutes assault in Wichita.
Molina is said to be contemplating a civil suit.

After the episode, Stephenson said, ''Nobody intentionally hit someone
else. Hey, we're the ones who got hurt out of the
deal.''

That statement alone should have cost Stephenson his job.

Proving that there is a hardball god, Wichita State was eliminated from
the NCAA tournament last Sunday, losing twice to
Oklahoma State.

Stephenson must have been really steamed after his team was knocked out.
Just think what they might have been able to do if
Christensen hadn't been suspended for that ''minor'' infraction. (Two
messages left at the sports information office at Wichita
State went unreturned.)

Meanwhile, Christensen waits to be drafted today. This is wrong. The
young man should be banned from organized baseball
until he shows a little contrition. This episode is simply too heinous,
and there has to be some admission of wrongdoing and
expression of remorse.

I don't want to hear about baseball's ''unwritten rules,'' or the code of
the West. It's one thing to brush back a hitter or send a
message to a batter who is obviously stealing signs from the catcher. At
least the guy in the batter's box knows it might be
coming. But throwing a baseball at the head of someone who isn't even
looking - some 30 feet to the side of home plate - is a
criminal, cowardly act.

Christensen was 9-1 this year with a 2.40 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 71 1/3
innings. Opponents hit just .182 against him and
he is rated among the top 25 college players in the draft.

Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette said, ''He's supposed to be a pretty
accomplished pitcher. In a situation like this, we
always look into the particulars and find out the background and see what
type of impact it will have on his career.''

Would the Sox be deterred by Christensen's hardball crime?

''I'd rather not say how our team would approach an individual
decision,'' said Duquette. ''It's not in our interest to reveal
that.''

Fine. Don't play your hand, Dan. Just don't pick Christensen. Let some
other organization pay a whopping bonus to this
hardball criminal.

I have two reactions;

#1. He's young. Kids make mistakes. Hell, many of us adults make
mistakes. He deserves a second chance, but he must suffer SOME kind of
consequence for this wrong. What that might be or who would enforce it is
the question.

#2. I first tried to compare this to the vigor for the game that Ty Cobb
had sliding with sharpened spikes, or Pete Rose ending Ray Fosse's career
with that play at home during the All-Star game. Then it occured to me,
those we're GAME situations. This was NOT a game situation. He needs
councelling until he understands the difference between all out
competitivness in a game and coexisting with the rest of us.

Being a prospect, probably since he was little, made him the center of his
universe his entire life. He needs councelling from someone who can get him
to empathise with the rights and needs of everyone else around him.

With this pick, it makes you wonder why the Cubs were so eager to pass on
getting Wil Cordero. Maybe they will now. It couldn't have been because Wil is
not really that good, could it?

Look......

If he had waited for the guy to get up to bat, hit him then, and had the same
result.......it would still be just as stupid, and just as wrong.

Only one difference.......It would probably be forgotten by now.

This is one of the biggest problems with baseball players today, and
athletes in general. They think they're better than others because they're
athletes.

J.D. Drew is just another example of this, on a different level. With him it
was greed.

Oh please....
You can't possibly be serious.
Tell me how, on this green earth, throwing at the head of a guy
standing in the batters box, while he's looking right at you (who's
*expecting* the ball to be throw very close to him) compares AT ALL to
throwing at the side of a head of a guy who isn't even LOOKING at you,
let alone expecting a ball to be thrown at him?

Not judging the morality of drafting or anything like that, I will say
that I too believe it was a cowardly, cowardly act.

Even if the guy was looking at him.

I also see no reason why criminal charges were not pressed.

Uh huh.

Wrong!

First mistake is that you are in Delaware, which in itself is not a bad
thing but we really need people in major States like Rhode Island.

Second mistake. Do you have you laminated DBFC membership card? No you don't
because I never sent you one. (See fee schedule)

Third. Have you visited the DBFC website? No again because we have not
published it.

So there and nonny nonny boo boo!

Kyle, sweetie. All we DBFC Members have said is that we are a part of DBFC.
It's the rest of you that have made a minor deal out of it. We use it as a
signature, nothing else. Should you choose to respond to it, okay, if not,
let it go. It's fun, it's Baseball and it's honoring a good and true Cubbie.
