I noticed Sat night that the Angels did a segment between innings on the
Jumotron of Angels players speaking on certain topics like who on the
team eats the most (most said Salmon), who is the worst dresser
(Percival, unanimously), etc...

Has anybody else seen this on other nights? How often? It WAS pretty
funny.

I saw one where the players were asked who wore the biggest cap size,
several players said "Erstad." Then at the end, Erstad dryly said "Me." It
was funny, and a good idea for something show.

Does anyone log these sorts of things? This is the sort of thing I would
jot down when keeping score; I also have a habit of keeping track of what
songs are played for each player.

Does anyone know if the songs are chosen _by_ each player or _for_ them?
Does Troy Percival like Deep Purple, or did someone decide "Smoke on the
Water" is a good pun, since he "throws smoke"?

It is a combination of both. There is guy that chooses the music, there was
an article about him in the OC register a couple seasons back, and he is
gets the music for the guys, and takes suggestions i.e. Erstad used to have
"Born in the U.S.A." and he mentioned in that very article he would rather
have Alan Jackson, and the guy changed it for him.

I believe Percival specifically requested "Smoke on the Water."
Personally, I wish they'd play the Goldberg theme from WCW when Percy comes in.
Those two were separated at birth ...

The "Goldberg" theme would be cool, but the song has stupid chants of
"Goldberg, Goldberg" (sort of like the Daryl Strawberry "Daaarrr-yl"). I
don't want people getting a chant going of "Goooold-berg" when Percy comes
out. WCW has to inculde the chants of "Goldberg" in the music to make you
think the people in the audience are really pumped to see him, but it is all
a farce (and yes, the pun is intended). I guess Ted Turner thinks that
since Baseball is a real sport, he'll put out real quality, and since pro
wrestling is a psuedo sport, he'll put out pseudo quality. Ok, that is
probably way too much pro wrestling for this NG.

Whoa, cool your jets there sparky. I never called people who watched pro
wrestling "dumb". Pro wrestling (sadly) is not the only thing on TV that is
mind numbing, but obviously there is a market for it at this time given the
ratings. Given the various shows of questionable quality that have garnered
large ratings at one time or another, it sure is nothing worthy of laurels.

Congratulations on your being a collegiate wrestler. While I have not seen a
great deal of that particular sport, what I have seen does not come close in
comparison to what is pushed by the WWF and WCW. Have you ever seen referees
habitually abused in college wrestling? How about competitors beating on each
other with chairs and tables? I don't think so. Pro wrestling has morphed into
an unholy combination of soap opera plotlines, cartoonish stunts, garish
costumes and just a pinch of athletic competition. Hey, if that's what floats
your boat - you're welcome to it.

I will reserve the right to take shots at pro wrestling in this or any other
newsgroup when relevant. It is a TV trash sport (like the Superstars in the
70's and the 90's X-Games) while this is a newsgroup devoted to a quality team
sport - a sport that is IMO the greatest one ever. However, my post was
directed to a specific individual whom I have respect for from his efforts in
this and other newsgroups. I was expressing my surprise at one particular post
of his. In retrospect, maybe I should have emailed it directly to him as
opposed to posting it here. While I can't take back the posting, I do stand
firmly behind the sentiment expressed.

As to your lack of appreciation for one of classic rocks greatest anthems, Deep
Purple's Smoke on the Water, you are - of course - welcome to your opinion.
That is what the US is founded on. It would be interesting to know if you
appreciate classic rock music and don't like that song or don't care for the
genre in its entirety - which would indicate a jaundiced opinion as much as my
distaste for YMCA extends to disco on a broad scale - and thus should not be
given serious consideration by aficionados of the genre.

Yeah, my Physical Therapists are proud of me. This week I learn to
shower and dress myself without dislocating my new hip (I have to be
careful for 3 months till the bone grows around the prosthesis).

The worst thing about the rehab place is no cable. Can you imagine the
barbarity of it!!?? Thank gawd the 3 games from Seattle were on regular
tv. But I don't get to see the Oakland games. <sob>

Fair enough. Just don't call it a sport. A critical characteristic
of a sport is that the outcome is not known in advance, in other words
the outcome isn't determined by management. Of course, using this
criteria, much of boxing would also fail to qualify!

There's little difference between science fiction and professional wrestling
these days ... The latter is audience participation, I guess that's about the only
meaningful difference ...
I always thought that if JMS ever wrote pro wrestling, we'd have Londo vs. G'Kar
in a cage match, with Vir and Na'Toth the valets. Londo, of course, would be slipped
the illegal foreign substance by Vir as G'Kar was beating the snot out of him.
Anyway, back to Angels baseball ...

This should be indication that B5 is no intelligent programming -- it
pretentiously acts as if it *is* intelligent programming, but such arrogance
was laughable.

Ob. Angels (kind of): Velarde is being activated by Oakland tonight, after
missing more than a month on what was supposed to be a minor injury. It is, I
suppose, inevitable that he won't really stay healthy for a long stretch, but
it's still more depressing that he will play at least one more game than Jeff
DaVanon this season...

Pro Wrestling is not a sport, and anybody that would tell you different is a
fool. A sport demands 3 things: Rules, Competition, and
Athleticism/Physical Activity (as stated by my Sports Sociology Professor).
Pro Wrestling does have some athleticism, but the rules are pretty sketchy
and there is no competition. Truly, mentioning that I am a collegiate
wrestler is dumb on my own part cause they are completely different
activities. However, Pro Wrestling is funny and entertaining, and not very
much different from any situation comedy. It has several examples of
cleverness and wit. I don't care if you don't like it, but then don't turn
and misrepresent it.

Well, I certainly love baseball, but how can you say certain sports are
trash sports? If it has rules, competition and physical activity then its a
sport, and each one has idiosyncracies. Sure, you might hate a sport. I got
no problem with that. I hate Hockey and Men's soccer, but I think that the
guys who do it are probably decent enough athletes and should be respected
for that at least.

Fine, you hate pro wrestling. Great. Although, if you aren't sure what you
are talking about, and still choose to stand firmly behind a fairly loose
interpretation of the show, then that shows your reasoning skills.
