I heard one of the Angels' post game highlights and they replayed some
home runs. One of the team's broadcasters sounds like Harry Kalas with
his "Outta here" home run calls. Is that his son Todd Kalas doing the
play by play?
Also which Angels' broadcasters, past or present, do you or did you
enjoy or not enjoy listening to over the years?

That is Don Drysdale...and every broadcaster since Enberg and Drysdale to me
are just people filling in for Enberg and Drysdale til they get back.

By far the best was Enberg and Drysdale. For awhile, the Angels had copycats
of those two when Al Conin and Bob Needham (? that last name?) shared the
both around 90-91.
Some other interesting on-air jocks were Don Wells and Dave Niehaus (who's
been with Seattle since its '77 inception); along with Enberg they were the
'69 team. Wells was the "you could kiss it goodbye" HR guy, while Enberg
made a nice alternative with his "touch 'em all" calls. Niehaus was about as
goofy as he his now with his irritating over-sensationalisms.
On the TV side, I enjoyed Reggie and Joe Torre together. Torre was a great
analyst, looked like that was gonna be his crowning achievement on the game
as he was destined to national prime time with his precise anectadotes. He
strived for that next level, but got it as a manager of four WorldSeries
winners. Reggie was a little abrasive ("Joe, that guy in the department
store was checking you out when you looked at the watches; he didn't trust
your dark Italiano façade.."), but entertaining as could be calling games
for a losing team. But the TV team I really enjoyed (taking nothing away
from Hudler and the present day mix) was Ken Wilson and Ken Brett in '95.
Wilson had that natural baritone you couldn't teach to real talent, while
Brett was vastly improved over his first couple years, and the fact the
Halos had such an enormous season made it fun to listen to the two Kens.
But I think the Angels made a mistake when they canned Al Conin and his
sidekick, and brought in Bob Starr and Billy Sample. I just couldnt stand
those two after enjoying Al Conin for a decade (Starr was better for
football). I haven't listened/watched much Angel baseball after they made
that blunder to Starr & Sample.

groundbreaking.

That's Terry Smith, who calls the "Outa here" home run calls. He's good for a
Harry Kalas-wannabe, no doubt.

His partner is Rory Markas, whose dream to be a broadcaster for the Angels came
true -- and you really can't ask for a first-year like this. Rory will be
around for years to come.

The only broadcasters I remember from the Angels were Bob Starr, Don Drysdale,
and Ron Fairly in the early-80s, and they were good.

Don't remember the other guys that much -- except for Ken Wilson, Al Conin, and
of course Dave "My Oh My" Niehaus. Listen to this guy when a grand slam home
run flys away... he is as goofy as Goofy.

Dick Enberg -- words can describe the true Voice of the Angels. It would be
nice to have him return to the booth someday,

It might have been possible (at least according to rumors & who knows
how true they were), but the salary Disney was willing to pay their new
radio guys would be an insult to Enberg.

As an anecdote: Dick Enberg was being interviewed by the McDonnel -
Douglas radio show and he relayed how he was on a an airplane and the
captain was giving the scores of the football games that Sunday. After the
scores were done he added "and, oh yeah, the Anaheim Angels are going to
the World Series". Dick let out a little yell and felt so happy, yet sad
because he knew he wouldn't be able to see any of the games at the stadium
due to his football committments.

Ken Bergamine:

>>Also which Angels' broadcasters, past or present, do you or did you

I loved Enberg, who was the main Angel guy when I was a 12 year old Angel fan.

Conin reminded me of a guy who was trying to sound like Vin Scully, and he did
a pretty good job. I liked Conin.

I never liked Bob Starr, but I thought he was a very good football announcer.

But no one's mentioned Mario Empemba and Darren Sutton from last year. I
thought both guys were terrific. Sutton was witty, and both were knowledgeable
and had great repartee. Markus and Smith are pretty good, but Empemba and
Sutton were a cut above.

I'm sure Physioc and Hudler are great guys, but they're both C- announcers in
my book. No wait...give Phys a D. He's a poor student of the game, seems to
think anything hit in the air beyond mid-outfield has a chance to go out, and
he's just too much of a homer. And he still hasn't figured out how to place
proper emphasis on a change. EX: The Angels are down 3-1, Glaus hits a solo
homer, and Phys says, "And now the Angles are down THREE to two!" And he's just
plain redundant. Beyond that, he's dull. Hudler's mental age seems around 15,
but he's started to grow on me.

I subscribed to MLB Extra Innings this year and found myself actually
watching Brewer & Tiger games (ugh!) just to hear Mario and Daron.

I can live with Phys, Hudler drives me away from the telecasts... I thought
Langston (??) did a good job subbing for Hud when he was in the hospital
back in April 2001. I always enjoyed Sparky when he did color.

Bill
I remember Llenas and McMullen
