Good.....at least to start the season.
I can't name another catcher who could contribute more in a back up
role......again at least at the start of the season
meh
sigh.
I agree. Lots of knowledge, and still a good backstop. Backup catchers
are not expected to hit much, but he might hit early, as he did last
year. I assume he will not redisvover how to throw effectively to 2d
base over the winter, but other than that, he's a v. good backup. We
can all hope that he'll not wear down so badly in the backup role,
but, as you implied, THAT is far from sure.
I was having a real good day until I just read that. What a waste of
a roster spot not to mention screwing Kottaras who did a decent job
playing once a week. And don't bother telling me about his
"intangibles". It might be different if they had powerhouse of bats -
but they don't - so they shouldn't try to carry a dead one.
I agree with all of this--glad to have Varitek's veteran presence in
Boston,
in some capacity.
No word on A-gon?
BTT
Much will come from Francona's use of his back up catcher.
Varitek clearly is better vs LHP. If that is the criteria that is
used to determine his playing time I think he can be successful.
If the plan is "Starting Pitchers Gets to Pick their Own Catcher" then
Varitek could struggle.
The most overrated catcher in the history of baseball....now you just
spent 3mill plus on him...lol
Kottaras will beat out the utterly worthless Varitek in spring
training. Varitek will finally get released, way too late.
I'm not even the slightest bit concerned...outside of the chances of someone
getting hurt that would make Victor more of a regular firstbaseman. THAT
might be something to worry about...IF you must. This is why I think they
should continue the search for a better catcher. Ideally, I would like
Victor to be a backup as a catcher behind a very good defensive guy. They
can then better utilize his versatility and not wear HIM down. I'd like to
think of Tek as the third catcher...I have always liked the idea of three
catchers...but obviously it helps to have a guy with Martinez' flexibility.

Sigh. The GM has already said that Martinez is the starter and wants
him to play most of the time and that Tek will be a traditional
backup.
It's like saying that Tek would catch in the playoffs because of
FranCONA's loyalty to Tek. Did it happen? NO.
I want Victor to be the starter. I want his bat as catcher, not a good
defensive catcher who can't hit. I also prefer a better backupn than
Tek, but I don't think the team will carry three catchers.
It seems that he hits better when he isn't catching...at least as often.
You'll get more out of him if he catches 100 or fewer games IMO.
I believe it was only last year when that was so. Even a slightly
lesser Martinez is better than most catchers.
I'm guessing that's the problem he had with it. I share his opinion. Not
very original if nothing else.
Never gets old for you eh?
Great...just great....

As was my emphasis.

My fear is that Francona will just pull the Business as Usual "We need
him" crap and start the fool in five out of six games. Then when he throws
out zero runners and hits .092, we'll hear the "he'll come around" crap.
Okay, I'm waking up now, wake up.

I think the sox are far past using Tek five out of six games. The
reverse is much more likely.
