Deadline for Jason Varitek
[Michael Silverman] By Michael Silverman
Boston Herald Sports Reporter
The Red Sox have set a Saturday deadline for Jason Varitek to accept or
reject a one-year offer, according to a source close to the
negotiations.
The contract is reportedly worth $5 million and includes 2010 options.
The club set the Jan. 31 deadline in order to keep negotiations with its
free agent captain and catcher from inching any closer to the Feb. 12
spring training reporting date in Fort Myers.
Varitek and the ballclub have been speaking about a new deal since he
filed for free agency in November. While the talks never have been
described as anything other than amicable, the lack of a deal speaks to
the vast difference in opinion between player and management regarding
the catcher's value. By declining the club's offer of arbitration in
early December, Varitek walked away from what would have been an
estimated $10 million in earnings for the upcoming season because it
would have precluded the sides working out a multi-year deal, and the
figure would not have equated to a guaranteed contract.
The current offer is for half of the projected arbitration number, with
the club holding a 2010 option at $5 million. If the Sox were to decline
to pick up their 2010 portion of the deal, Varitek would still hold a
player option at $3 million.
Additional incentives built into the pact could increase its overall
value.
Varitek is believed to still want a two-year deal.
With no other suitors yet to surface, the chances of the Sox sweetening
their offer appear to be slim to none. The clock is ticking for the
catcher.
Varitek also is believed to have instructed his agent not to discuss
monetary terms with any other teams during the entire free agent
process. Any list of teams certainly was shortened dramatically when the
Red Sox offered arbitration, since Varitek's signing with another club
would lead to the new employer surrendering a draft pick to the Sox.
Should the sides agree to a deal, Varitek's role this coming season is
expected to be less than last year's 131 starts. Exactly who Varitek
would be sharing catching duties with, however, remains an unanswered
question. Josh Bard is on the 40-man roster but has a non-guaranteed
contract, while youngsters George Kottaras and Dusty Brown also will be
in the mix in Fort Myers.
The team is believed to be waiting for a Varitek decision before moving
more decisively on a trade.
The Game
I honestly don't know if I want him back. I think it's time to move on, or
maybe they are buying time, like another year or two until another big name
catcher becomes a free agent. I'm sure there is someone out there they
covet.

>political stuff?
Both are fine <g>. but no whiny RS stuff --- we've had enough of that.

I had not focused until recently on the Non-guaranteed aspect of
arbitration. It does seem fairly unlikely that the RS would cut Tek
after agreeing to an arbitration award, but who can say? If Tek were
awful in ST, perhaps the RS would have done a trade. Perhaps only a
10% risk, but not a risk worth taking, perhaps.

I would think that if Tek is not signed tht the RS would be working
overtime on a trade. I would hope so. but I do not like any of the
rumored trades and do not think a trade for Martin is possible
(however nice in theory). So I'm now moving into the sign Tek camp,
which surprises me, actually. My preferred option was for some other
team to sign Tek and give us the picks, but that is not going to
happen, or so it seems.
Yeah...really...because there is SOOO much MORE to be said about the Tek
situation. Do you WANT Tek back by the way? Or do you simply enjoy the hell
out of cut and pasting articles? You could of course, simply post a link
too. And your own damn opinion? You DO realize that we can read the goddam
papers too?
Look. everything has been said...and repeated...ad nauseum, about the
Varitek negotiation. What you just posted is still another boring rehash of
a story that has become old news. By every writer that covers the team. If
you don't believe that...there is this simple site called Google
News...where you can find every story out there. There is really nothing
new...nothing left to say. EVERYONE has had their say on the matter.
Enough of the whiny Varitek stuff!
Not really fair Dano. This is a baseball group and this is a
baseball post as opposed to politics and tv and all the other assorted
stuff. Yes, he could have posted a link and it would have been
better. But the identification of the deadline day was newer news
and as such, was a realistic item to post about.
only drano would post about politics all day long and then complain
about a baseball post in the red sox group.
True. But, as I told my 22 year old daughter yesterday, as she was crying
to me from the west coast, over a $350 speeding ticket that I had to agree
was unfair (or risk getting her more upset) for probably the thousandth
time...life is unfair. <g>
Look. It's Usenet. You can piss and moan a hundred times a day...over
every OT post...or you can ignore those posts...or posters if you wish. But
it will never...EVER change. You are, of course free to complain...but it
won't help. I choose to respond to what I feel like. It's a free internet.
As for the post itself...just MY opinion...upon reading still another fresh
post on something that has been covered over and over and over...one of my
pet peaves. THAT won't change either I suppose. So I'm guilty too. :(
My opinion is they should sign him for 1 year with a 1 year option and
still trade for Salty if they can for the future because the Twins or
Yanks will get Mauer.
Another opinion is I post the stuff in here because it is a Red Sox
group and I like the Red Sox, in your expert opinion, is that not the
thing to do. I have posted links also, but maybe people like you don't
know how to use them?
My last opinion is, No I don't realize you can read the paper because
you seem like a assclown with nothing better to do than be an internet
assclown hiding behind a keyboard. You probably weigh about 100 pounds
and look like Andy Dick. You must be a pathetic, lonely, little man.
Thats my opinion
The Game
It is fair. The original poster could have linked the article, and
given his/her opinion.
Also, rather than quote the entire article, the original poster could
have summarized it,
>X-No-archive: yes
>In news:glne99$9d3$1...@nntp.motzarella.org,
>Dano <janea...@yahoo.com> mused:
>It never ceases to amaze me how some people feel they've got to butt
>into the conversations of others in order to complain about those
>conversations.
>
>If you don't like what other people are talking about, then butt
>out! It's just that simple. Are you really so narcissistic that
>you think that any of these conversations are posted primarily for
>your entertainment?
>
When you post on a newsgroup, there's no private conversations.
That's what email is for. If you post here, you should expect anyone
to respond and they are entitled to.
Amazingly, we actually agree on that. That is what was proposed by the team
in the Silverman article you posted with your name at the bottom. Of course
he changed his story in less than 24 hours. The same substance was also
printed on WEEI and in the Globe previously.

People like me eh? Jackass. You don't even know how to post.
Are you trying to say that post was YOUR opinion? It appears to be
another's words...like most of your C&P specials.
> My last opinion is, No I don't realize you can read the paper because

Wow are you off. Whatever...wouldn't want to spoil your fantasy. This how
you "discuss" eh? Another insult poster. No substance. Pretty sad.
The very same stuff was posted yesterday you doofus. In a thread started by
you two days earlier. Do you think you get points by starting threads or
something? You started a thread late on the 26th, and I posted a polite
response yesterday morning. You had done the very same thing...post another
writer's words...with no substance or opinion of your own...no link...no
author's name. I went to WEEI on my own to learn it was clearly credited to
Rob Bradford. After that post of yours, no less than 5 of us had a further
discussion...notable was your absence in the discussion of your own topic.
Do you generally only post, then read what people say in response? Try
reading the stuff that has already been posted. You are simply repeating
well known information.
> Thats my opinion
>
Mine is that my first instinct about you was correct. You are a self
important moron. A rare "opinion" from you must be an insult? Beautiful.
Oh...and learn to post properly. Again there was no distinction between
what I posted and your response.
Game, I appreciated the article - thanks! I'm very interested in the
Varitek situation and I actually come here for Red Sox news. Hmm. Red
Sox newsgroup. Maybe I'm delusional to hope for Red Sox news here.
Dano, some of us are bored to tears with the off topic stuff. Yes, we
don't have to read it but lately that means nothing to read.
I want Tek back. If he has another bad year, oh well, I was wrong and
I suppose I'll admit it but for now, I think 2009 will be better for
him than 2008.
Kate - in favor of Red Sox posts

Kate...with all due respect...I post more Red Sox related posts in this
group in one day, than you have in your life. Nice name BTW...same as my
oldest (22) daughter...who I'll guess has forgotten more about the Sox than
you ever knew. Peace.
Well, I did say it could have been linked to. I was referring to it
being yet more of the same Varitek information.

Well, I have certainly seen cleaner groups. This group does shit in
its own bed quite well. :-)
Dano, I admit I don't have the knowledge that most of you in this
newsgroup have about the Red Sox. That's why I read the group but
don't post much. I've learned a lot about baseball here.
I found this group in 2004, when I was so wound up that I couldn't
stand not being around people who were as wound up as I was, and here
in TN - not a lot of Sox fans. The internet can be a wonderful thing.
I grew up in Medfield. I was a die hard Sox fan by 1967, coming home
and watching the games on TV, playing catch in the backyard - my
brother was Mike Andrews, I was Dalton Jones.
I'm sure your daughter does know more about baseball than I do,
growing up with you as a father - lucky girl. Me, I mostly lurk and
learn. Last year was the first time in 30 years that I got to watch
all the games I wanted on MLB.TV. I became totally addicted.
So carry on with the OT subjects and I'll just savor the Red Sox
posts.
Peace back at you,
The other Kate
What are you gonna do, slap my wrists or make me sit in the corner. I
have overlooked your obnoxious attitude and you somehow thinking you are
an internet police force.
Do you actually think you are an asset to a discussion group, people
stick around because of you? Nope, you are exactly why people stop going
to groups to discuss what the topic is intended to be. You are no more
than an internet bully, who thinks your words on a screen make you
either smart or powerful. In your case they only show your ignorance and
lack of a personality.
Why not try being friendly to new posters and they might stick around
and add something to this group. Of course it would mean even more
people being exposed to your ignorance.
Now do as you normally do and play net cop and read me my rights, as you
see them moron. It gets you nowhere in case you have not figured that
out yet, it only makes you look more stupid than these people obviously
have already seen. Your assclown reputation preceeds you. You make
Yankee fans seem nice and intelligent as a whole.
The Game

Believe it or not...I pass over at least as many OT threads as I respond to.
But they're a lot less annoying than the many nasty trolls...political as
well as non-political that clog up my killfile. But hey...it's the off
season. Just killing time.

No you dope. I'm not a net cop. I'll simply ignore you. You aren't
bringing anything of your own to the table anyway. We are on the net
anyway. We can read these stories our selves. That's why most simply post
an excerpt and a link.

What exactly is your problem? What did I say that was so horrible to make
YOU unleash a torrent of insult rain down on me? You better thicken up your
skin lad. It gets far worse than that. I simply speak my mind. I try to
treat others as they treat me. YOU chose to make it personal and start with
the insults.
> Why not try being friendly to new posters and they might stick around

Why not enter the group and *read* what others post instead of simply cut
and pasting the words of others? DISCUSS. You know...back and forth. It
is YOU that is being a jerk here. Do YOU really think \you are some great
informational source for the group? Puh-leaze.

Nope. You don't have a fucking clue. This is what I do to folks that prove
they are incapable of civil discussion and aren't the least bit interesting
or amusing. They get filtered...into the killfile. Don't worry...it won't
hurt you one bit. Feel free to do the same. Oh wait...WebTV doen't give
you that option now does it?
To whom are you replying?

Looks like BDD agrees with you, Dano:

"Cement blocks less painful than Varitek talk--can the deal-or-no-deal
deadline be moved to Wednesday morning?"

SOX ARE FINE IN '09!!
Varitek is the dumbest man in baseball if he doesn't take the deal. He
is already one of the dumbest for turning down arbitration and for not
signing this offer the second it was presented. I hope the Red Sox
call him up and withdraw the offer. They are under no obligation to
keep it open.
>No you dope. I'm not a net cop. I'll simply ignore you. You aren't

That will work great, you ignore me and I will ignore you. You jumped on
me the first time I posted in here and have continued to do so ever
since. Guess you do not even realize what an assclown you are. No wonder
your daughter moved to the other side of the country.
I post things in here for discussion. This is a Red Sox discussion
group, right?? So I post things found that deal with the Red Sox to open
it up for discussion. That is how a discussion group works, you know?
Just ignore me and I will ignore you, that should not be hard to do.
The Game
The Herald reports that the Sox were surprised when Tek declined
arbitration, and that they will pull the offer off the table at the
deadline. If there there is another offer, it will (obviously) be for
much less, or (obviously again) the Sox would shut the door and move
on.
http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view.bg?articleid=1148584
I wouldn't be surprised if Theo has a catcher trade wating to happen.
Being in Dano's 'killfile' is a badge of honor for most of us.......
Seconded.
'With all due respect'...my ass. You then proceed to insult her twice.

WTF is wrong with him??? This is at least the second time I've read of him
going off on someone he considers a newbie because he doesn't recognize
them. He's such an arragont and ignorant POS.
Yes I agree, he is stupid or stubborn like a mule, it is crazy.
Enough already, I am so sick of Varitek and all the drama, it is not
worth it for a .220 hitter! Now he wants to retire, what is he nuts,
there is a movie called Take The Money And Run, that's what he should
do.
That bugs me too.
