He was a star college player in his youth. He told me recently that one
of the first things the coaches told their catchers is, "If you get into
a fight NEVER take your mask off." V'Tek just obeying another
"unwritten rule"?

why would you take off protection?
it's like the first rule of camouflage..... don't stand up.

Right. The point is to have an advantage. Hockey players used
to pull the jersey over the opponent's head, which they can't
do much anymore since they're clipped down.
