brings Holliday to Boston. Holliday is still waiting even though all
reports have him staying with the Cardinals. Probably so. Is Holliday the
big bat? He could play LF with Cameron as the 4th outfielder. Cameron would
be the primary option when Drew does not play (which is often). Hermida
then could be packaged in a deal to bolster the bullpen.
Cameron would not like this but remember when the Yankees had no interest in
Texeira because they had signed Swisher? Cameron will get his at bats. I
know it's alot of money and puts the Sox over the luxury tax threshold. From
earlier posts alot comes off the books after next year .
As I indicated I was just thinking out loud.

You may be right, but I learned a while ago (2004 put the exclamation point
on it) that you never, ever say never! I lean toward agreeing with
you...however...there is always a (perhaps slim) chance that now, dealing
from a position of strength, unless someone steps forward for Holliday with
a huge deal, that something could be done with Boras.
I DO think if that were to happen...other deals would almost have be part of
the plan. I actually like this team. But all the pieces are still there to
make any number of trades as well. I think it's fair to say they won't be
adding a ton of payroll without moving some. When everyone gets paid...like
Papelbon, who is in line for a generous bump in salary, they are already
looking at breaking into the lux tax bracket. So remember that any contract
given Holliday (or anyone else) is automatically that much more costly.

He could off meant it in the context of a sign-and-trade type deal, as
in the Cardinals sign Matt to a 7 or 8 year deal over $100 million,
and then they trade him over too the Red Sox(or another team) for
Beltre and a PTBNL. It's not a popular thing to do in MLB, and you
probably can't trade a new FA signee that quickly (as Orwell pointed
out). Is that even allowed in the MLB collective bargaining agreement
(?)...beats the hell out of me!

I don't think you can trade a FA signee until mid-June, *without* his
permission.
On the other hand, in the above scenario, having been traded during a
contract, Holliday could demand (and get) a trade the following year.
It's dicey.
