Farrell worked really well the RedSox pitchers, Francona, and Gary Tuck - mutual
respect, some good results. My understanding is that he believes in the
statistical analysis so would be compatible with the RedSox upper management
philosophy.

The Jays didn't do as well as predicted - was he part of the problem would be my
question.

He did have a lot of injuries to his starting rotation...Brandon
Morrow and Kyle Drabek to name a couple.

Of course if he is coming here he better be able to handle players
getting hurt.....and the Red Sox have some really 'slow healers'

@bmoore: Absolutely. Football players--especially RBs--have short
careers. I think Bobby V made the right choice.

@John: See, that's my fear: Farrell was a good pitching coach, but
most pitching coaches don't do well if promoted to manager.

@John: There's no question that Young and McClure were disasters as
pitching coaches, and I'd love to have Farrell back in *that* role.

@John: As you say, Farrell is at the very least unproven as a manager,
enough as to make me ask why he's such a slam-dunk choice for Boston.

@John: Of course, Francona failed in Philly, Joe was clueless in
Flushing, etc., but not every fallen skipper becomes good later.

@John: Stat knowledge is fine, but Farrell's not the only guy who
knows that stuff. Frankly, I wish *Ben* would get more into stats!

@John: Particularly the most basic but important stat--OBP, which
Boston seems to have completely abandoned (that's GM, not MGR).
